QUICK SUMMARY
An essential oil base is a blend of carrier oils used to dilute concentrated essential oils before applying them to the skin. Mama Z’s Oil Base combines coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E to create a moisturizing foundation for body oils, massage blends, roll-ons, salves, and dozens of natural beauty recipes.
Coconut oil helps reduce moisture loss and support the skin barrier, while sweet almond and jojoba oils act as lightweight emollients that soften and condition the skin. Vitamin E adds antioxidant support and may help slow oxidation, but it is not a complete preservative.
Because this recipe contains no water, it does not require a broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative. Keep moisture out of the jar, store the blend in a cool, dark place, and discard it if the aroma or texture becomes stale or rancid.
When I first started swapping conventional products for natural alternatives, I quickly learned that the secret to great DIY skincare is having one reliable essential oil base you can trust.
Back when I was pregnant with our oldest daughter, I needed something simple, affordable, and truly clean for my changing skin. But every “natural” product I checked came with a long ingredient list, hidden fillers, and a price tag that made me cringe.
So I did what most natural-living mamas eventually learn to do: I made my own.
To my surprise, the simple blend I created worked better for our family than anything I had purchased at the store. Over the years, it became the foundation for nearly every DIY we make in our home, including massage oils, roll-ons, body butters, salves, skin-care blends, and children’s recipes.
Today, we call it Mama Z’s Oil Base because this essential oil base is everything I wanted and more. It moisturizes without feeling excessively greasy, works well for many skin types, and gives me a ready-made carrier whenever I want to create a new essential oil blend.
It’s one of those “once you make it, you’ll never go back” staples that can save money, simplify your routine, and help reduce your family’s exposure to unnecessary fragrances and fillers.
If you’ve been looking for a trustworthy, do-it-all carrier oil blend to add to your natural-living toolbox, this is the one I recommend again and again.

What Is an Essential Oil Base?
An essential oil base is a carrier oil or blend of carrier oils used to dilute essential oils before topical application.
Essential oils are highly concentrated. Adding them directly to the skin can increase the risk of redness, burning, irritation, or sensitization. A carrier base distributes the essential oil over a larger area, reduces its concentration, and makes application easier.
Carrier oils also bring benefits of their own. Plant oils can soften the skin, reduce moisture loss, supply fatty acids, and support the skin barrier. The exact effect depends on the oil’s composition, quality, freshness, and the person using it. (1)
Mama Z’s Oil Base is different from using one carrier oil because it combines several textures and fatty-acid profiles:
- Coconut oil gives the blend body and richness.
- Sweet almond oil helps it spread smoothly.
- Jojoba adds a lighter, silky finish.
- Vitamin E supplies antioxidant support.
Put simply, it is a blank canvas. Keep one jar unscented, then scoop out small portions whenever you need a customized massage blend, body oil, salve, or roll-on.
Essential Oil Base How-To Video
If you walked into our home today, you’d see this essential oil base in more than one dispenser. It’s the blend we reach for constantly because it works for everything from an everyday moisturizer to a customized DIY remedy.
The video below walks you through exactly how we liquefy, mix, and store the recipe. It makes a generous batch, so gather several clean glass jars before you begin.
Once you have this base on hand, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.
Mama Z’s Oil Base Ingredients
This recipe uses just four moisturizing, skin-loving ingredients. That simplicity is one reason it has become such a staple in our home.
It is affordable, versatile, and easy to incorporate into dozens of DIY preparations, from body oils and after-bath blends to massage recipes and roll-ons.
Here’s why I chose each ingredient and how it supports healthier, more nourished skin.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil makes up the bulk of this essential oil base and gives it a rich, protective texture.
Human studies have found that virgin coconut oil can function as an effective moisturizer and support skin-barrier function. In one randomized trial involving children with atopic dermatitis, virgin coconut oil improved disease severity and measures of skin hydration and barrier integrity more than mineral oil. (2)
Laboratory research has also documented antimicrobial activity associated with coconut oil and its fatty acids. That does not make this recipe sterile or allow it to replace medical treatment, but it helps explain why coconut oil is such a beloved body-care ingredient.
Because coconut oil becomes solid at cooler temperatures, the finished base may soften or harden with the seasons. Also, avoid washing large amounts down the sink because hardened oil can contribute to plumbing clogs.
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil has a mild aroma and smooth texture that makes the finished blend easier to spread.
It contains primarily oleic and linoleic fatty acids, along with naturally occurring tocopherols and other minor compounds. Sweet almond oil has a long history as an emollient and is widely used to soften and condition dry skin. Modern reviews support its role in cosmetic formulations for dry, sensitive, and aging skin, although clinical research on the oil by itself remains limited. (3, 4)
Anyone with a serious almond or tree-nut allergy should ask an allergist before topical use or substitute another carrier oil such as jojoba or sunflower seed oil.
Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is technically a liquid wax rather than a triglyceride-based oil. Its wax esters resemble some of the natural lipids found on the skin’s surface, which helps explain its light, silky feel.
Jojoba is widely used in moisturizers, cleansers, hair products, and topical preparations. Research reviews describe antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and skin-conditioning potential, although many therapeutic claims still rely on laboratory or formulation studies rather than large human trials. (5)
It helps balance the heavier texture of coconut oil and makes Mama Z’s Oil Base useful for both body and hair care.
Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E oil is a fat-soluble antioxidant commonly added to cosmetic products. It can help protect lipids from oxidation and provides antioxidant support when applied to the skin. (6)
This distinction is important: vitamin E is not a broad-spectrum preservative. It will not protect a water-containing product from bacteria, mold, or yeast.
Because Mama Z’s Oil Base is an anhydrous recipe, meaning it contains no water, microbial growth is less likely when the jars and utensils stay clean and dry. Vitamin E may help slow rancidity, but the blend can still oxidize over time.
Vitamin E can also cause contact dermatitis in a small number of people, so patch test the finished base before widespread use.

Quantity
Ingredients
- 54 ounces coconut oil, extra-virgin AND unrefined (melted)
- 16 ounces sweet almond oil
- 8 ounces jojoba oil
- 4 ounces vitamin E oil
Supplies
- Wire whisk OR immersion blender
Instructions
- Be sure to preserve the coconut oil’s healing properties by using indirect heat instead of heating it on the stove. We’ve even placed a glass measuring cup with coconut oil on a space heater or oven while baking. You can also immerse a jar of coconut oil in a bowl or saucepan or warm (not boiling) water for a few minutes until the oil liquefies.
- Combine all ingredients in a large glass bowl or cooking pot and mix using a wire whisk or an immersion blender to create a smoother “whipped” consistency if desired.
- Pour into quart or pint-sized mason jars or other glass containers. Store in a cool, dark place where it will last for 1-2 years.
Notes
Step One: Liquefy the Coconut Oil
Your coconut oil needs to be liquid so the ingredients blend evenly.
My favorite method is to fill a bowl with warm water and place the closed coconut-oil jar inside. Let it sit until the oil liquefies. Keep water from entering the jar.
You can also set the closed jar near a warm oven while baking. Avoid excessive or prolonged heat, which can accelerate oxidation and affect the aroma and quality of oils.
Step Two: Mix the Ingredients
Once your coconut oil is liquefied, pour it into a large, clean glass bowl. Add the jojoba, sweet almond, and vitamin E oils.
Stir until the mixture is completely blended.
For a whipped consistency, let the mixture begin to cool and thicken, then use an immersion blender or wire whisk. The texture will vary with room temperature because coconut oil naturally hardens below its melting point.
Step Three: Store Your Essential Oil Base
Pour the finished essential oil base into clean, dry glass jars. Mason jars work beautifully, or you can reuse glass containers that have been thoroughly washed and dried.
Label each jar with the recipe name and preparation date. Store it tightly covered in a cool, dark cabinet away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.
For the freshest results, use the blend within 6 to 12 months. It may remain usable longer when made with fresh ingredients and stored properly, but shelf life is ultimately limited by the ingredient that oxidizes first.
Discard the oil if it develops a stale, crayon-like, bitter, or paint-like aroma.
Pro Tip: If you live in a cooler climate, your essential oil base may harden. Place the sealed jar in a warm-water bath for a few minutes to soften it.
How to Dilute Essential Oils in the Base
The right dilution depends on the essential oils, application area, frequency of use, age, and individual health considerations.
As a general adult guide:
- 1% dilution: Approximately 6 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier base
- 2% dilution: Approximately 12 drops per ounce
- 3% dilution: Approximately 18 drops per ounce
Drop size varies among bottles, so these are practical estimates rather than laboratory measurements.
A 1% dilution is a sensible starting point for facial care, sensitive skin, older adults, and frequent use. Many healthy adults use a 2% dilution for general body care. Stronger blends should be reserved for limited areas, short-term use, and oils with suitable dermal limits.
Children are not simply small adults. Use child-appropriate essential oils and much lower dilutions, and avoid assuming that every oil featured in an adult recipe is appropriate for a baby or young child.
Everyday Nourishing Body Oil
- 1 ounce Mama Z’s Essential Oil Base
- 6–12 drops of essential oils appropriate for the intended user
Add the essential oils to a glass jar and mix gently. Use after a shower, before bed, or whenever your skin needs extra moisture.
Patch test every new blend and stop using it if you notice redness, burning, itching, swelling, or another unwanted reaction.

Essential Oil Base FAQs
What is the best base for essential oils?
The best base depends on your skin and intended use. Coconut oil creates a rich texture, jojoba feels light and stable, and sweet almond oil spreads easily. Mama Z’s blend combines all three for a versatile body-care base.
Do I need to dilute essential oils before applying them?
Most essential oils should be diluted before topical use. Dilution lowers the concentration, improves coverage, and reduces the likelihood of irritation or sensitization.
How many essential oil drops should I add per ounce?
For general adult body care, approximately 6 drops per ounce creates a 1% dilution, while 12 drops creates roughly a 2% dilution. Always follow oil-specific dermal limits and use less for children, sensitive skin, and frequent application.
Is vitamin E a natural preservative?
Vitamin E is an antioxidant, not a broad-spectrum preservative. It may slow the oxidation of oils, but it does not prevent bacteria, yeast, or mold from growing in products that contain water.
How long does Mama Z’s Essential Oil Base last?
For the best freshness, use it within 6 to 12 months and store it tightly covered in a cool, dark location. Ingredient freshness and storage conditions affect shelf life, so discard the blend if it smells rancid or noticeably different.
Why did my essential oil base turn solid?
Coconut oil naturally hardens in cooler temperatures. Place the sealed jar in warm water until it softens, then stir before using.
Can I use this carrier base on my face?
Some people tolerate it well, but coconut oil can feel heavy or contribute to clogged pores in acne-prone skin. Patch test first and consider using plain jojoba or another lighter carrier for facial products.
Can I use this essential oil base on children?
The unscented carrier blend may be suitable for many children when there are no ingredient allergies, but any added essential oils must be child-appropriate and highly diluted. Ask your pediatrician before using new topical products on babies or children with eczema, allergies, or chronic skin conditions.
Can I substitute another oil for sweet almond oil?
Yes. Jojoba, sunflower seed, fractionated coconut, apricot kernel, or grapeseed oil may work, though each substitution will change the texture and shelf life.
