Get Your Best Shave Ever
Shaving is easy for some people, but others struggle with skin irritation and unsightly bumps. Sometimes, a simple change in technique can make a huge difference. Here are a few tips to help you look your best.
Use Quality Razors
Cheap razors can be harsh on the skin for many reasons. The blades tend to dull after one or two shaves, so you have to apply more pressure to get the hair shaved. This can lead to an increase in cuts, and it wastes a lot of time!
These razors can drain your budget because they need replacing more often as they easily break. If you can, invest in a better quality razor. It will save you money over time.
Perfect Your Technique
There is a right and a wrong way to shave. For one, you should always shave when your skin is damp. Warm water helps soften the hair and makes it more pliable.
Second, you should always shave in the direction the hair is growing to reduce pulling. Last, take your time! Shaving quickly leads to razor cuts and those unsightly red bumps.
These small changes can add up and make a big difference, primarily if you’re used to just rushing through your routine.

After a lot of experimenting, I figured out what ingredients create a fluffy, silky smooth homemade shaving cream. Here’s what you need to add to your shopping cart.
Coconut Oil: I’m sure you’ve heard of coconut oil as a moisturizer. It seeps into the skin and creates a long-lasting hydrating effect.
Coconut oil is a multi-tasker because it also can help heal wounds by increasing collagen in the skin. (1) This cost-effective ingredient is a must for any DIY stash!
Shea Butter: Shea butter is one of my favorite moisturizers. It’s unique because it’s the only natural moisturizer that whips up!
You can double your product by including this ingredient, and the whipped effect feels luxurious. Shea butter helps with anti-aging, keeps moisture in, and it can even help heal eczema. (2)
Carrier Oil or Mama Z’s Oil Base: Carrier oils add an extra dose of moisture, but they also help the essential oils disperse evenly. There are many suitable carrier oils, such as sweet almond, jojoba, fractioned coconut, and grapeseed oil.
All are fantastic choices, but my favorite option is my oil base. I created this recipe when I was pregnant, and it helped keep my skin supple! It contains a mixture of carrier oils that are ultra-hydrating and great for the skin. I highly recommend keeping a batch on hand!
Essential Oils for Shaving

Stay clear of aggravating, caustic “hot” oils like clove, oregano, lemongrass, and cinnamon.
Homemade Shaving Cream How-to
This recipe requires a little elbow grease, so get your best whisk ready! I’ve suggested some ingredient quantities to get you started, but don’t feel like you have to stick to them!
You can vary the amounts based on your personal needs and still have a fantastic product. If you want to experiment, you can add aloe vera or Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap. Have fun, be creative, and try different things until you find what works for you!
- ½ cupcoconut oil
- ½ cup shea butter
- ¼ cup carrier oilor Mama Z's Oil Base
- 10-20 drops essential oils*
- Supplies:
- Saucepan
- Double boiler or glass jar
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Glass jar for storage
- Fill a saucepan with 1-2 inches of water and place over medium-low heat. Add the coconut oil, shea butter, and carrier oil to a double boiler or glass jar. Place in the saucepan to melt.
- When the ingredients are melted, remove them from heat and cool until it reaches a soft consistency.
- Using a whisk, whip the shaving cream until light and fluffy. While whipping the mixture, add essential oils. Start with 10 drops, and adjust to your liking.
- Once your mixture has doubled, place in an airtight glass jar and store in a cool place.
- Use as you would any other shaving cream!
Feminine essential oils include: Lavender, geranium, rose, helichrysum, rosemary, frankincense, clary sage, and ylang ylang.
Step One: Melt the Moisturizers
Fill a saucepan with 1-2 inches of water and place over medium-low heat. Add the coconut oil, shea butter, and carrier oil to a double boiler or glass jar. Place in the saucepan to melt.
When the ingredients are melted, remove them from heat and cool until it reaches a soft consistency.
Step Two: Whip the Shaving Cream
Using a whisk, whip the shaving cream until light and fluffy.
Step Three: Add Essential Oils
While whipping the mixture, add essential oils. Start with 10 drops, and adjust to your liking. Once your mixture has doubled, place it in an airtight glass jar and store it in a cool place.
Use as you would any other shaving cream!
TIPS FOR HOMEMADE SHAVE CREAM
- This product lasts longer if you keep water out of it. I recommend drying your hand before taking some or using a scoop.
- Please use caution in the shower because it tends to make the shower/tub floor slippery.
- Be careful when using around sinks, as coconut oil can clog drains.
