Top 11 Cedarwood Essential Oil Benefits Cancer, Weight & More

Cedarwood essential oil benefits, come from the properties of the aromatic tree. Derived from the heartwood of cedar trees like Atlas and Himalayan cedar, it has been treasured for centuries for its grounding and calming properties. Known for its rich, woody aroma, cedarwood is a powerhouse in aromatherapy, skincare, and overall wellness. Let’s explore the remarkable benefits and uses of this versatile oil and learn how it can support a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

What is Cedarwood Essential Oil?

Cedarwood essential oil is derived through steam distillation of the wood, bark, roots, or berries of cedar trees, each species with its own unique therapeutic profile. Common varieties include Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Himalayan Cedarwood (Cedrus deodara), and Virginian Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana), all of which are renowned for their rich, woody aroma and versatile applications.

Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) and Virginian Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) are both prized for their therapeutic properties, yet they differ significantly in their origins and applications. Atlas Cedarwood, native to the mountainous regions of North Africa, is renowned for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-leukemic properties, along with its insecticidal capabilities. In contrast, Virginian Cedarwood, a species indigenous to North America, is highly valued for its insect-repelling properties and its role in promoting scalp and hair health.

While both cedar oils exhibit antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, Atlas Cedarwood Essential Oil is often associated with wellness applications targeting systemic medical conditions, whereas Virginian Cedarwood is frequently used for its practical benefits in skin and hair care as well as natural pest control. These tend to be general guidelines and many people will find that they have a personal favorite cedar once they’ve tried them all and stick to that most of the time.

The therapeutic benefits of cedarwood oil stem from its high concentration of natural compounds, including anethole, cedrol, alpha-cedrene, and beta-cedrene. These active constituents contribute to its antiseptic properties, ability to promote emotional balance, and effectiveness in supporting skin health and hair growth. These healing properties are so profound that it’s no surprise it’s one of the healing oils mentioned in Scripture.

In addition to its restorative properties, cedar essential oil offers benefits for pest control, making it a natural choice for insect repellents and home applications. Its versatility and therapeutic value make cedarwood oil an indispensable addition to any natural living family.

Top 11 Health Benefits of Cedarwood Essential Oil

1. Sleep Aid

Cedar essential oil is widely recognized for its sedative properties, primarily attributed to its high cedrol content. This natural compound has been shown to calm the nervous system and promote relaxation, making it a valuable tool for individuals struggling with insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns. A study published in Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters highlighted cedrol’s sedative qualities. It has the ability to enhance the onset of quality sleep, as well as the duration, especially for older adults with chronic sleep disturbances.

When diffused or applied topically before bedtime, cedarwood oil helps create an environment conducive to restorative sleep at night. Incorporating this oil into a nightly routine can be a game-changer for those seeking a natural alternative to over-the-counter sleep aids. And don’t forget to take advantage of the synergistic properties of using more than one essential oil.

As you know, essential oils can often work well synergistically with other oils and when it comes to sleep at night, this is the perfect time to make that happen. Cedarwood pairs well with other calming oils like sandalwood and valerian, enhancing its therapeutic properties for sleep. We use it in our Deep Relaxation Diffuser Blend with vetiver and other essential oils to encourage quality relaxation.

2. Mental Clarity and Cognitive Support

The soothing aroma of cedarwood essential oil is not only relaxing but also stimulates the brain in unique ways that enhance focus and mental clarity. Research published in Neuropsychobiology found that aromatherapy with essential oils, including cedarwood, improved cognitive function and reduced symptoms of mental fatigue in individuals suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Cedarwood is particularly effective for reducing brain fog and enhancing memory retention, making it a useful aid during mentally demanding tasks. Blending cedarwood with rosemary essential oil or frankincense can further amplify its cognitive benefits, offering a natural solution to improve focus and productivity. 3. Relaxation and Meditation

Known for its earthy and grounding scent, cedarwood essential oil is a favorite in aromatherapy for promoting emotional balance and relaxation. A 2021 study published in Frontiers in Psychology demonstrated that cedarwood’s calming effects on the autonomic nervous system can help reduce stress and anxiety.

Cedarwood’s ability to promote mindfulness makes it ideal for meditation practices. When combined with oils like vetiver and sandalwood, it creates a powerful synergy that enhances emotional resilience and supports a centered state of mind. This unique blend of properties makes cedarwood essential oil an invaluable tool for anyone seeking to navigate daily stress with greater ease.

4. Cancer Support

Emerging evidence points to cedarwood essential oil’s potential in cancer care. A study published in Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters highlighted the anti-leukemic effects of cedarwood oil, particularly from Atlas and Himalayan varieties. Researchers found that the oil exhibited cytotoxic properties that could target and eliminate leukemia cells.

Although further clinical trials are needed, these findings underscore cedarwood’s promising role as part of an integrative approach to oncology. Its ability to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress further supports its inclusion in holistic cancer support protocols. We don’t yet know the full potential of essential oils and cancer, but research is promising.

5. Chronic Disease Support

Cedarwood essential oil’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a valuable ally in managing chronic diseases. According to The Essential Oils Apothecary, cedarwood can reduce systemic inflammation, which is a common underlying factor in conditions like arthritis, cardiovascular disease, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

The oil’s sedative effects also support stress management, a critical component of chronic disease prevention and care. Using cedarwood in massage therapy or aromatherapy can help alleviate both physical and emotional symptoms associated with long-term illnesses.

6. Antiseptic and Healing Properties

For centuries, cedarwood has been valued for its ability to cleanse wounds and prevent infection. Modern research corroborates its antiseptic qualities, with a study in Planta Medica. It shows that cedarwood oil’s antibacterial properties effectively inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi.

This makes it an excellent choice for natural first-aid applications, such as treating minor cuts, abrasions, and insect bites. Its ability to promote tissue regeneration also accelerates wound healing, making cedarwood a staple in any holistic medicine cabinet. We even use it with our wool dryer balls to keep our clothes fresh and free of molds and mildew.

7. Skin and Hair Care

Cedarwood essential oil is a favorite in natural skin care products and haircare routines due to its ability to balance sebum production. This makes it beneficial for both oily and dry skin types and in soothing skin irritation. A study published in The Journal of Dermatological Treatment found that cedarwood’s anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce acne, while its antifungal activity combats dandruff and other scalp conditions. In our body care DIYs this essential oil has a place in our non-toxic kid’s body wash, homemade deodorant, aftershave DIYs, and more.

In hair care, cedarwood is often combined with oils like rosemary and lavender to promote healthy hair follicles and combat hair loss. Regular use can encourage hair growth and help with skin conditions. This means not only a healthy scalp but stronger, healthy-looking hair. If postpartum hair loss or thinning hair is a concern of yours, consider adding a couple of drops to your shampoo to nourish your scalp and stimulate hair growth. You’ll also see this oil used in our DIY Hair Detangler, Mama Z’s Homemade Hair Spray, to soothe dry scalp with healing hair masks, and more.

8. Hormonal and Emotional Balance

Cedarwood’s ability to regulate the nervous system also extends to balancing hormones and stabilizing emotions. By interacting with the limbic system, the oil helps to alleviate mood swings, reduce irritability, and promote a sense of calm. Recent research highlights cedarwood’s potential as a natural mood stabilizer, particularly when combined with other adaptogenic essential oils.

This makes cedarwood a valuable tool for managing emotional challenges and enhancing overall well-being, whether used aromatically or topically. It made our list of top essential oils to help with depression and is a favorite for those who prefer earthier scents over floral aromas.

9. Weight Management Support

When paired with a balanced diet rich in bioactive foods and regular exercise, cedarwood essential oil can aid in maintaining a healthy weight. Its stress-reducing properties are particularly beneficial, as chronic stress can contribute to weight gain.

A study in The Journal of Physiology and Behavior found that cedarwood’s aroma helped regulate stress hormones, supporting metabolic health and appetite control. Incorporating cedarwood into a wellness routine can make weight management feel less daunting and more sustainable over time.

10. Stress Reduction

Cedarwood essential oil is a natural stress-relief remedy, offering a calming effect that soothes the mind and body. Its ability to reduce cortisol levels and support the parasympathetic nervous system has been documented in multiple studies, including one published in Neuropsychopharmacology. This makes it an effective tool for combating the physiological effects of stress.

Whether diffused, applied topically, or incorporated into a bath, cedarwood provides a simple and accessible way to find calm amidst life’s challenges.

11. Insecticidal Properties

Cedarwood essential oil is widely recognized for its potent insect-repelling and pest-controlling properties, making it an invaluable natural solution for both indoor and outdoor applications. This oil contains sesquiterpenes, compounds that disrupt the neurological processes of insects, effectively repelling and even killing pests. According to The Essential Oils Apothecary, cedarwood oil has been traditionally used to protect clothing and fabrics from moths, as well as to deter fleas and ticks from pets and humans.

Research from the EPA notes cedarwood’s efficacy as an insect repellent in a variety of applications. Its impact on insect pheromones prevents pests from locating their hosts or establishing habitats, making it a popular choice for use in natural insect repellent sprays and home pest-control solutions. Blended with other essential oils like citronella or eucalyptus, cedarwood enhances the effectiveness of these formulations, offering a safe alternative to synthetic pesticides.

In addition to its repellent effects, cedarwood oil can also disrupt the lifecycle of certain pests. For example, it is particularly effective in controlling fleas and ticks, and it is commonly used in natural pet care products. These qualities make cedarwood essential oil a versatile and eco-friendly option for managing pest issues without harmful chemicals.

We use this oil in many of our household DIYs for pest control such as our homemade floor spray, spider-repelling spray, and kid-friendly mosquito-repellant spray.
