Why Avoid Conventional Dusting Sprays?
If you have wood furniture, wood trim, or beloved heirloom pieces in your home, you already know how quickly dust shows up. Dark wood seems to reveal every speck, and detailed woodwork can hold dust in all those little grooves and corners.
So why take the time to make your own dusting spray when the store shelves are full of options?
Here’s the thing: some cleaner brands are better than others, but many conventional dusting sprays rely on synthetic fragrance, petroleum-based ingredients, and propellants that do not belong in a healthy home. You may get a shiny finish, but you can also end up breathing in chemicals you never meant to invite into your living room.
That “lemon fresh” scent people associate with dusting spray is often not lemon at all. It is usually artificial fragrance, and fragrance is one of the sneakiest ingredients in household products. Because of trade secret protections, companies can hide multiple fragrance chemicals behind that one word on the label. (1)
When you see “fragrance” on a cleaner, it does not necessarily mean one simple ingredient. It can represent thousands of fragrance components, and many people experience symptoms from fragranced products, including headaches, skin irritation, breathing issues, and neurological reactions. (2)
This is important because biblical health is not just about what we eat. It is also about stewarding our homes, reducing our toxic burden, and creating a place where our families can breathe easier.
That is one reason we use essential oils in our daily routines. You will find them in our diffusers, homemade body care, natural perfume, and cleaning recipes. Instead of fake fragrance, essential oils give you the real plant-based aroma. Nothing compares.
How I Clean Woodwork & Wood Furniture
Woodwork and wood furniture can be a little tricky because dust settles into crevices, carvings, corners, and trim details. Over the years, I have learned a few simple tricks that make cleaning wood easier and help keep furniture looking beautiful.
- If wooden surfaces are very dusty, do not start with polish right away. Otherwise, you may just move dust from one place to another. Use a vacuum attachment with a soft brush to remove loose dust and debris first. If the brush attachment is too large, use a soft toothbrush to gently loosen dust from small crevices.
- Always make sure wood furniture is free of sticky residue, crumbs, and grime before using a dusting spray. If you polish over dirt, you can accidentally seal that mess into the surface.
- If your wood has light scratches, use a little beeswax to help fill in damaged areas. This works best for surface scratches, not deep dents. Lightly rub a beeswax bar over the scratch and watch it soften the appearance.
- If your furniture has water damage or white rings, add a couple teaspoons of organic white distilled vinegar to your carrier oil. This mixture can help neutralize the area and reduce the appearance of water marks. It may take a few applications to see a difference.
- To keep wood tables looking their best, use coasters consistently. Regular cleaning and simple daily habits go a long way toward helping furniture last for years.
Non-Toxic Dusting Spray Ingredients
This homemade dusting spray uses just two simple ingredient categories: carrier oil and essential oils. The result is a beautiful, naturally scented wood spray that helps refresh and lightly polish wood surfaces.
Carrier Oil: A good essential oil dusting spray should moisturize wood without leaving it sticky or overly greasy. Natural carrier oils like fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, and sweet almond oil can all work on wood surfaces. My favorite is fractionated coconut oil because it soaks in well, does not leave a sticky residue, and is thin enough to spray in a fine mist.
Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil: Lemon myrtle essential oil has a bright, sweet, lemony scent that makes this recipe smell clean without artificial fragrance. It is also a wonderful addition to homemade cleaning products because research has shown antimicrobial properties. (3)
Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Lemon eucalyptus essential oil adds a crisp, fresh aroma that works beautifully in natural home recipes. Eucalyptus-family oils have also been studied for antifungal activity, which makes this a smart choice for DIY cleaning blends. (4) I especially love adding it to cleaning products during buggy Georgia seasons.
Tangerine Essential Oil: Tangerine essential oil brings a sweet citrus note that helps brighten the whole blend. Oils from the orange family are some of our favorites for freshening the home and lifting the mood while we clean.
Homemade Dusting Spray With Essential Oils
This DIY dusting spray comes together in minutes. Besides the ingredients, all you need is a spray bottle with a fine mister attachment and a soft cleaning cloth.

DIY Dusting Spray for Wood Surfaces With Essential Oils
Quantity
Ingredients
- 4 ounces extra-virgin olive oil
- 5 drops lemon myrtle essential oil
- 5 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oil
- 5 drops tangerine essential oil
Supplies
Instructions
- Combine all the ingredients in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle with a mister attachment.
- To use, spray liberally on all your wood surfaces. Wipe off with a soft, clean cloth.
Step One: Combine Ingredients
Combine the olive oil and essential oils in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle with a fine mister attachment. Use an amber glass bottle or another dark-colored glass bottle to help protect the essential oils.
Plastic bottles are not recommended for this recipe because essential oils can cause plastic to break down over time.
Step Two: Clean Your Wood Surface
To use, spray the DIY dusting spray lightly over wood surfaces and wipe with a soft, clean cloth. White microfiber cloths work well, or you can use an old organic white T-shirt cut into cleaning rags.
Application: Start with a small amount, especially on delicate wood finishes. A little natural oil goes a long way. For best results, dust loose debris first, test an inconspicuous spot, and buff the surface until it looks clean and naturally polished.
