Sugar Free Chai Latte Recipe & Earl Grey Variation

My healthy, sugar free chai latte recipe is one for the books! Unlike most coffee shop drinks, this beverage is free of allergens such as dairy and gluten. It’s so sweet and creamy; you’d never guess it’s good for you!

You’ll appreciate this gentle option if you’re trying to cut down on caffeine. It’s an excellent substitution for that second cup of coffee!

Variety is the spice of life, and we love having healthy drink options at our fingertips. We’ve included our favorite Earl Grey tea latte, so you have multiple beverages to choose from. It takes just a few minutes to fill your fridge with a healthy, filling drink.

I know you’ll love these tea lattes just as much as we do!

All About Chai

This delicious beverage has its roots in Indian culture, where it was rumored that a royal wanted a healing drink to use in rituals. He was brought chai tea, and the fad quickly grew from there!

Different cultures created their own tea blends based on what was available to them, but the one thing these drinks had in common was that they didn’t contain actual tea leaves. When the drink spread to Western cultures, connoisseurs added black tea, and chai tea evolved into the drink we are familiar with today.

Every chai is different when it comes to types and amounts of spices, but most contain a few similar ingredients, but most contain a few similar ingredients. Here are a few things you can expect to find in most chai latte recipe ingredient lists.

Organic Black Tea: This strong tea is the base of chai lattes and many other drinks. Black tea contains antioxidants, including much sought-after catechins and polyphenols. (1)  Antioxidants are an important part of any diet because they reduce inflammation. When left unchecked, inflammation can lead to aches, pains, and even cancer. (2)

The great thing about high-quality chai tea is that you can find decaf versions! This is great news for those who love tea but aren’t huge fans of caffeine. Our favorite chai tea bags use black tea, but you can find flavorful chai blends that use green or matcha tea.

Organic Ground Cinnamon: This spice adds a hint of sweetness to chai latte recipes. It contains antioxidants similar to black tea and is anti-inflammatory. It’s also anti-diabetic, helping improve insulin resistance. (3)

If you’re purchasing cinnamon sticks for your own spice cupboard, I recommend buying Ceylon cinnamon. This is the superfood version of the spice, and it adds a gourmet flair to any recipe calling for ground cinnamon.

Organic Cardamom Seed: Cardamom seed is the “secret ingredient” in chai tea blends. You’d notice if it were missing! This spice may help fight cancer by activating certain enzymes. (4) Some say that cardamom is “Indian mint” because of its flavor and ability to fight halitosis-causing bacteria. (5)

Ginger Root: Ginger is a popular addition to healing elixirs because of its ability to aid digestion. Many people use ginger root as a natural remedy for nausea and indigestion. (6)  You should note that any health benefits only apply to clean beverages, not those loaded with artificial sugars.

Black Pepper: This ingredient is among the most powerful, giving chai tea that perfect hint of spice. Many health professionals hailed black pepper as a “cure-all” due to its many benefits. While black pepper certainly doesn’t cure everything, it can improve mental health, prevent oxidative damage, and kill harmful bacteria. (7)

Healthy Tea Ingredients 101

The key to making healthy recipes that taste great is high-quality ingredients. This chai latte recipe uses different components than others, but it tastes incredible. Here’s what you need to add to your shopping cart.

Organic Masala Chai Tea Bags: Our favorite chai tea bags are pyramid-shaped and budget-friendly as they can be steeped 2-3 times. When purchasing tea, be sure to get organic varieties.

Having clean sources for your spices is vital, and organic is always best. Be mindful of where your herbs are sourced too. Many spices from China contain forms of mold. (8) Yuck!

Organic Unsweetened Almond or Coconut Milk Beverage: To keep this recipe dairy-free, we use organic unsweetened almond or coconut milk beverage. These non-dairy creamers create rich beverages without the detriments of milk. Be sure to grab unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk offerings!

Liquid Stevia: Liquid stevia is our favorite sweetener and an excellent choice for beverages, as it blends beautifully. Plus, it comes in so many different flavors. Try blending stevia flavors such as cinnamon, vanilla, or pumpkin pie to complement chai flavors. Bonus: One bottle lasts a long time!

Glass Bottle: We are all about green living and are always looking for ways to reuse containers.

32-ounce glass organic juice bottles are the perfect way to store tea lattes! We keep them in the fridge to pour over ice for iced chai, or to warm later on the stovetop. Just be sure to label your bottles, so you don’t get them confused!

Healthy Chai Latte Recipe

This simple sugar-free chai latte is easy to make and makes any day extraordinary. You should note that your tea needs time to steep for best results. This creates a strong drink with plenty of flavor.

Earl Grey Variation

This tasty Earl Grey Latte will make you feel like you’re at a cozy cafe in London. This tea is delightful, with hints of citrus thanks to bergamot. It’s one of our favorite black tea blends because it has a unique flavor.

The process for this recipe is the same as our chai latte recipe, just with different tea bags.
