6 Ultimate Benefits of Lime Essential Oil You Need to Know
QUICK SUMMARY

Lime essential oil, from Citrus aurantifolia, is a bright, sweet, citrus oil best known for its uplifting aroma, cleansing properties, digestive and metabolic support, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant power, and practical use in natural home and body-care recipes.

Research suggests that lime oil and its key constituents, especially d-limonene, may help the body respond to stress, support mood, fight bacteria and fungi, support healthy weight pathways, calm inflammatory signaling, protect against oxidative stress, and even show cancer-fighting activity in laboratory and preclinical studies.

The best ways to use lime essential oil are diffusion, inhalation, properly diluted topical use, natural cleaning blends, and careful internal use only when the oil is labeled for ingestion and properly solubilized. Cold-pressed lime oil can be phototoxic, so topical use requires extra dilution and sun-safety care. Steam-distilled lime is generally preferred for leave-on skin applications.

Like many citrus oils, lime essential oil benefits your body in a myriad of ways. From supporting healthy weight pathways and fresh oral-care routines to helping your stressed-out child wind down at night, there’s a lot to know about its therapeutic efficacy!

Maybe you’re like me, and you love the bright, sweet scent of lime essential oil. It’s no wonder this oil is a popular addition to many aromatherapy blends and air freshening sprays. But most people don’t know the benefits of using it far exceed your sense of smell.

This is important: lime oil is simple, cheerful, and familiar, but it is also chemically complex. Depending on the extraction method and plant material used, lime oil may contain d-limonene, beta-pinene, alpha-pinene, citral, linalool, myrcene, terpinolene, neral, geranyl acetate, and other bioactive compounds that help explain why this little green fruit has been treasured in food, folk medicine, cleaning, perfumery, and natural health traditions for generations.

Historical Uses of Lime

Lime oil can only be found in its rind, so many of the traditional uses for lime fruit and juice are not exactly the same as using the essential oil. Nonetheless, it’s fascinating to look back and see how the benefits of lime essential oil were hinted at throughout historic uses.

The original vitamin C supplement? British explorers frequently carried limes aboard ships to prevent scurvy. All citrus fruits are well known to protect against this unpleasant, but completely preventable disease. Some captains are said to have felt so strongly about the necessity of preventing scurvy that they ordered every crew member to eat a lime, including a bite of the peel on a fixed schedule. Most of a lime’s volatile oils and vitamin C are in the peel, so this was a wise practice.

Here’s the thing. God designed plants with layers of usefulness. The juice nourishes. The peel perfumes. The volatile compounds cleanse. The fruit brightens food, supports the body, and brings joy to the senses. Lime is one of those simple gifts that reminds us biblical health often starts with stewarding what is already in our kitchen and garden.

1. Dried Lime

People in semi-tropical climates have long relied upon this food preservative and flavoring to help prevent food-borne pathogens long before refrigeration was available. Whole limes were kiln- or oven-dried, then broken and crumbled onto meat as needed.

Dried lime has also been simmered in oil warmers for house blessing—this may have been the ancient precursor to modern essential oil diffusers. Lime is still used effectively to preserve food and to brighten the energy in our homes.

2. Preserved Lime

Crushed in a jar with salt and left to naturally ferment, or pickle itself, lactic acid-preserved limes and lemons were probably among the first foods cultured specifically for their probiotic benefits. When traditionally prepared by this method, limes and lemons, including the peels, lose their sharp bitter bite.

The flavors meld with the fruit into a slightly salty, mellow, sweet-tart condiment that is still popular worldwide today. Who knew citrus fruit could provide your daily dose of good bacteria?

3. Natural Insecticide

Lime essence makes a note-worthy insecticide (22)—it successfully kills the vermin responsible for grain damage among others, such as mosquitoes. When properly diluted and applied, steam-distilled lime essential oil may be a good tool in your insect-repellent arsenal.

Reality check: this does not mean lime oil replaces protective clothing, proper environmental control, or wise mosquito prevention in high-risk areas. It does mean lime belongs in the conversation when families are looking for natural outdoor blends, cleaning blends, and plant-based ways to reduce toxic burden in the home.

Properties of Lime Oil

Referred to in the scientific community as Citrus aurantifolia, lime essential oil is usually extracted from the peel. Most lime oils used in aromatherapy are either cold-pressed, steam-distilled, or produced as specialty extracts.

In aromatherapy, expressed citrus peel oils are commonly called essential oils even though the extraction method is different from steam distillation. Primarily reserved for citrus peels, mechanical pressing, aka cold pressing, literally squeezes the volatile and non-volatile compounds out of the rind of the fruit. At one point in history, this was done by hand using a sponge to collect the oil, but those days are long gone.

Citrus essential oils can also be steam distilled. This matters because steam-distilled lime oil has a different aroma and chemistry than cold-pressed lime oil, and it is generally preferred when phototoxicity is a concern. Cold-pressed lime has the fuller, brighter peel aroma many people love, but it can contain furocoumarins that increase sun sensitivity when used on skin. (23, 27)

Lime oil is also becoming more popular as a CO2 extract. CO2 extracts are still more specialized in home aromatherapy because fewer clinical trials have evaluated their safety and efficacy. That said, they are popular because no potentially harmful solvents are required, the aromas are often truer to the original plant, and the process can capture a broader range of plant compounds.

So, depending on the type of lime oil you get, the chemical compounds may include a mixture of alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, borneol, citral, cineole, d-limonene, geranyl acetate, linalool, myrcene, neral acetate, terpinolene, and related monoterpenes.

Newer research continues to confirm that Citrus aurantifolia is rich in biologically active compounds. A 2025 study of Citrus aurantifolia leaf essential oil found strong antioxidant activity and antimicrobial action against several bacteria, including Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella choleraesuis. (7) Leaf oil is not identical to cold-pressed peel oil, but the finding supports what traditional use has suggested for a long time: lime is a potent, bioactive plant.

6 Lime Essential Oil Benefits

Lime oil can be used via inhalation, topical application, and careful ingestion if dosed, diluted, and solubilized properly. Try some of the recommendations below and be sure to consult with your physician if you’re being treated for a medical condition or are currently taking pharmaceuticals.

1. Reduce Stress

Unless you live in a sequestered non-technological community, you have probably heard again and again about the importance of putting away all the electronics. Not only to avoid constant EMF exposure, but to learn to be present in the moment with your family, friends, and co-workers… and you probably read that apt reminder on a social media app while gazing at your electronic device!

We all know we desire more downtime. We want our children’s lives to be at least a little more like our own internet-free childhood years. The screen-drain is real—we may feel frequently fatigued, even exhausted. But ironically, we may also feel too stressed or anxious to sleep well.

Lime essential oil can help! It has the amazing ability to reduce feelings of distress and promote better sleep. Even better, it’s an appropriate essential oil for use with children when properly diluted and diffused with common sense.

Lime essential oil is known to be rich in d-limonene, and rat research shows that d-limonene can produce measurable anti-stress effects through behavioral and physiologic nervous-system parameters. (1) It is difficult to be present when the cares of the day will not leave your mind and body. We hold onto concerns and tensions, unfortunately ending up with less connection and more stress-related health concerns.

See one of my favorite emotional detoxification blends which includes the uplifting spark of lime essential oil!

Lime essential oil eases stressful transitions. Studies show pressed lime oil (2) reduces muscle spasms, so it’s worth asking what benefits the essential oil may show in future studies on tension and stress-related discomfort.

All citrus oils are beneficial for mood and stress relief because of compounds like d-limonene. While orange essential oil usually has the highest levels, lime essential oil should not be overlooked as a d-limonene-rich option. This compound also appears to influence oxidative stress and inflammatory pathways in animal research. (3)

Application: Try putting 10 drops of lime, 5 drops of ylang ylang, and 5 drops of frankincense into an aromatherapy inhaler for instant stress support.

2. Boost Mood & Energy

These effects and benefits of lime essential oil extend into mental health and mood support as well.

Lime Essential Oil is Extremely Energizing

Lime essential oil is an energizing essential oil, like many of the citrus family. In fact, you could combine lime and peppermint essential oils into a room spray to boost mood, energy, and concentration. Try mixing 10 drops of each in a 2 oz. spray bottle and top off the rest with 190-proof alcohol. The perfect afternoon pick-me-up spray!

Citrus essential oils are widely used in aromatherapy for relaxing, calming, mood-uplifting, and cheer-enhancing effects, and modern reviews continue to support this traditional use. (4) Lime’s bright aroma can help shift the environment in your home, which matters because your atmosphere affects your emotions, habits, and relationships.

Some people like to add a drop of high-quality essential oils that are safe to take internally, like lime or key lime, into a properly solubilized drink to replace caffeinated drinks while driving or working.

Learn more about safely solubilizing essential oils in water. Learn more about how to disperse and dilute essential oils in our guide.

Lime Supports Mental Health During Depression

Depression affects many lives in ways that can be devastating, and not everyone finds relief in pharmaceuticals. Some people do find relief but suffer greatly from the side effects of prescription antidepressants. To support your self-care efforts at home, try lime essential oil as part of a broader lifestyle that includes prayer, community, nutrition, sleep, movement, and professional care when needed.

All citrus oils are great at combating low mood, and lime is no exception. Citrus aromatherapy research is especially interesting because inhaled citrus oils appear to influence brain chemistry, stress response, and depression-like behavior in preclinical models. (5) Obviously, if you have thoughts of self-harm, contact your medical professional or emergency support immediately, but for day-to-day emotional support, essential oil therapy can be a meaningful natural tool.

Other Citrus Oils Also Boost Mood

Have you ever returned from work in a funk, only to find a sulky teen or grouchy grade schooler—maybe even an irritable spouse? Diffuse some lime essential oil, and bring the family together for revitalizing family time.

If your family practices a “good morning do over,” this is a perfect oil to diffuse in the family room to set the cheerful tone while everyone goes back to their rooms and comes out again to restart the day with a new perspective.

Application: Try 3 drops each of lime and bergamot in your diffuser to change the environment in the air and enhance your mood.

3. Kills Bacteria, Fungi & Viruses

Lime essential oil shines as a cleansing oil. Research is strongest for antibacterial and antifungal activity, and broader limonene research also points to antiviral potential in experimental models. (7, 8, 26)

Dental caries or cavities are caused by oral bacteria that can be difficult to control—even with great dental hygiene practices. Researchers found that garlic with lime mouth rinse showed promising antimicrobial activity against oral organisms, including Streptococcus mutans, lactobacilli, and Candida albicans. (6) You know how much we love garlic here!

Lime essential oil is also effective at fighting bacteria in general and oral bacteria, specifically. We recommend it in our essential oil oral health mouthwash for this reason.

Not Just Oral Bacteria but Fungus Also! Lime essential oil even shows activity against fungal organisms, and d-limonene has been studied for antifungal effects against Candida species. (26)

Immune protection is another benefit of using lime essential oil. Lemon is not the only citrus fruit that helps boost your immune system during cold and flu season. Add lime to your homemade hand soaps, gels, or lotions, and add it to your spray cleaners whenever the latest bug is going around. Lime essential oil is one of the best to add to your bathroom cleaner because it brings a fresh scent and broad cleansing support.

Research continues to show that lime and other citrus essential oils can be antibacterial. Lime preparations have been shown to inhibit gram-positive organisms, gram-negative organisms, and fungi in laboratory research. (8, 9) A newer 2025 study also reported antioxidant and antibacterial activity from Citrus aurantifolia leaf essential oil. (7)

Research shows (10) citrus preparations such as lime essential oil to be especially powerful against fungal infections. Many parents use lime as a supportive tool for fungal skin overgrowths such as ringworm or athlete’s foot for the entire family—always dilute for use on skin, especially for children. You may wish to consult an aromatherapist when using essential oils with an infant.

Because of lime’s reliability as an antimicrobial, combined with its safety for human consumption when used appropriately, lime is considered to be one of the best food-safe antibacterial preparations available. (11) In addition, it imparts great flavor when used as a marinade or added to salsa. Yum!

Application: Try mixing 6 drops of lime oil and 6 drops of geranium essential oil with 1 ounce of shea butter to make a body butter and apply on affected areas. Use steam-distilled lime for leave-on skin applications when sun exposure is possible.

4. Burns Fat & Reduces Cravings

Weight loss is an ongoing battle for an ever-growing number of American men and women. It is distressing that even our children are increasingly struggling to control their weight in a healthy, nurturing way. In addition to healthy eating habits, using essential oils can help.

You’ve probably seen the recommendations to drink fresh lemon or lime beverages to help lose weight. But lime essential oil is even more concentrated, and, though it has a different chemical profile than the juice, may contribute to weight-loss efforts as well. It’s one of my seven top essential oils for weight loss support.

Lime essential oil has been shown to help prevent weight gain in a murine study. (12) In another randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial, overweight adults were given capsules with cumin and lime before meals, and the study evaluated weight loss and metabolic markers over eight weeks. (13) That does not mean lime oil alone is a magic weight-loss cure, but it does show why lime deserves attention as part of metabolic wellness research.

D-limonene was shown in a mouse study to help improve high triglyceride levels, high cholesterol levels, fasting blood glucose, and metabolic pathways tied to dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. (14) Another animal study found that d-limonene improved oxidative stress markers in diabetes-related complications. (15)

This information obviously is not meant to encourage poor food choices, but rather to offer hope that essential oil therapy for weight loss can support great results when added to a transformation lifestyle. Starting from where you are, even if you feel you haven’t completely fixed your diet yet, is important. Make simple switches in your sweeteners, and your meat, and look for healthy recipes your family will enjoy.

Reality check: there is no oil for a junk-food lifestyle. Essential oils work best alongside bioactive-rich foods, movement, sleep, hydration, emotional healing, prayer, and a healthy home environment.

Application: from the Essential Oils Diet, make our fat-burning roll-on…

  • Add 4 drops lime, 3 drops peppermint, 3 drops grapefruit, 2 drops cypress, 1 drop eucalyptus, 1 drop cinnamon bark into a 10 ml roller bottle. Fill with fractionated coconut oil and apply on your abdomen or problem areas twice daily for one month.

5. Soothes Inflammation

Inflammation is a necessary part of healing. In fact, your body cannot heal without a degree of inflammation. However, chronic or excessive inflammation can cause numerous very serious inflammatory conditions, including:

  • asthma
  • atherosclerosis
  • certain cancers
  • Crohn’s disease
  • hay fever
  • active hepatitis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • chronic peptic ulcer
  • periodontitis
  • sinusitis
  • tuberculosis
  • ulcerative colitis

Citrus oils such as lime essential oil are shown in peer-reviewed mouse studies to be active anti-inflammatory agents. (16) D-limonene research also points to anti-inflammatory effects involving cytokines and oxidative stress pathways. (26) They seem to specifically address inflammation at its cellular source.

This is a big one. Inflammation is not just a sore knee or a swollen joint. It is tied to stress, sleep, diet, toxic exposure, gut health, blood sugar, infections, and emotional overload. That is why our family focuses on the foundations first: eating an anti-inflammatory diet, practicing calming habits, exercising regularly, sleeping well, reducing toxic burden, and using God-given plant medicine wisely.

If you or a loved one suffers from an inflammatory condition, add lime essential oil to your daily diffuser blend, uplifting room spray, or pillow sachet to support healing.

Application: Try mixing 2 drops of lime oil, 2 drops orange, 2 drops lemon, 2 drops grapefruit, 2 drops petitgrain, and 2 drops of vanilla absolute with 1 ounce of a carrier oil and apply over your body after getting out of the shower for total body inflammation-soothing properties. Use steam-distilled citrus oils or apply to areas that will not be exposed to sunlight.

6. Anti-Aging & Rich in Antioxidants

Lime essential oil is rich in antioxidant compounds, and antioxidants matter because oxidative stress can affect skin appearance, inflammatory balance, brain fog, metabolic health, and the aging process. While no essential oil can turn back the clock two decades overnight, specific components in lime essential oil, such as limonene and pinene compounds, are among the best-known antioxidant-rich citrus constituents safe for regular, properly diluted use. (17)

Current research makes this even more interesting. A 2025 in vitro and in silico study on fresh key lime essential oil found antioxidant activity and good inhibition of elastase and collagenase enzymes—two enzyme pathways researchers study in relation to wrinkle formation, skin elasticity, and collagen breakdown. The researchers concluded that fresh key lime oil has potential as a natural cosmetic ingredient, while also noting that clinical validation is still needed. (25)

Put simply, this means lime is a beautiful addition to natural skin care when used properly. It is not a magic wrinkle eraser, but it can support antioxidant-rich, toxin-free body care. And of course, the antimicrobial benefits make it great for healthy homemade deodorants and other body-care recipes.

Application: Make Mama Z’s anti-aging, skin-healing serum and add 5 drops of lime oil. Choose steam-distilled lime for leave-on facial or body products, or use cold-pressed lime only within safe dilution limits and away from sun exposure.

Other Health Benefits (Including Cancer)

Lime essential oil doesn’t just benefit sleep concerns and mild anxiety. Studies are showing health benefits and healing support for major medical issues too. Isn’t God amazing?

Cancer-fighting. Lime essential oil has been shown to fight cancer cells in laboratory research. (18) Lime juice has also been shown in vitro to specifically target pancreatic cancer cells—among the most painful and difficult cancers to treat. (19) Breast cancer cells are also affected by components present in lime essential oil. (20) Evidence like this should be stated honestly: these are laboratory, constituent, preclinical, and mechanistic findings, not a human lime-oil cancer treatment protocol.

Essential Oils and Cancer See more of our tips for using essential oils while battling cancer in this important article!

Fatty liver disease. Limonene found in lime essential oil and other citrus oils has been studied for effects on insulin resistance, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, and liver injury in animal models. (14, 26) In The Essential Oils Apothecary, we highlight lime as one of the oils worth studying for liver support because several of its active compounds are considered liver-protective.

Alzheimer’s Disease. This is a devastating diagnosis as the personality of the patient slowly fades away. It’s something that has touched our family personally. Essential oils for Alzheimer’s patients provide promising treatment options. Lime essential oil may help by inhibiting cholinesterase, an enzyme involved in neurotransmitter breakdown, and through its antioxidant activity. (24) More human research is needed before making clinical claims for dementia treatment, but the mechanism is worth watching.

Heart Disease. Citrus consumption, including lime, may also have a direct impact on the incidence of heart disease. How much of this benefit translates to lime essential oil is something future studies will need to show, but lime essential oil shouldn’t be ruled out. D-limonene research has shown effects on triglycerides, cholesterol, glucose, oxidative stress, and inflammatory pathways in preclinical metabolic studies. (14, 26) When dietary and lifestyle changes can protect your heart, why take chances—try to add some citrus, whether from diffused oil, fresh fruit, or refreshing citrus water, every day.

Gallstones. The limonene present in lime essential oil is responsible for an impressive 48% complete-dissolution rate when d-limonene was infused directly in a clinical gallstone study. (21) A 2025 limonene review also summarizes human gallstone research showing complete or partial dissolution in some patients after direct infusion, not ordinary topical use or casual internal use. (26) That distinction matters. The results are fascinating, but this is a medical procedure context, not a home remedy protocol.

Some European countries report similar success with peppermint essential oil, and European doctors rarely remove a gallbladder from an otherwise healthy patient. The trial above infused the preparation directly, so it’s not the same as topical application or putting drops in water, but the results are interesting and worth preserving in the conversation.

Risks & Contraindications

With all the remarkable and almost unbelievable applications of lime essential oil to improve your health, home, and life, you may rightly wonder whether there is any downside to using lime oil.

There is a lot of buzz in the essential oil world regarding photosensitivity of skin after using citrus oils. It is true that expressed citrus oils can cause you to be very susceptible to sunburn for hours after application, and they are really only appropriate for products that are well diluted, used in the evening, washed off before sun exposure, or used on completely unexposed skin.

However, steam-distilled citrus oils do not cause the same ultraviolet light sensitivity because steam distillation removes non-volatile furocoumarins. (23, 27) Even pressed oils are typically safe if they are used in appropriate concentrations and diluted with care and common sense. See more about citrus essential oils and photosensitivity here.

For leave-on products applied to skin that may be exposed to direct sunlight, safety assessments and IFRA-related guidance have recommended limits for expressed lime oil. One safety report lists 0.7% for lime oil expressed in leave-on products applied to sun-exposed skin. (27) That is why we love steam-distilled lime for body oils, facial serums, and roll-ons.

So, there is no downside at all? Actually, there is one caveat. Here, kitty, kitty.

Some cats may be extremely sensitive to essential oils—especially citrus essential oils such as lime or key lime. See more about our recommendations for using essential oils for animals in this post with Dr. Janet Roark.

The GRAS is always greener… the GRAS designation means that upon inspection for safety, a product or ingredient is Generally Recognized As Safe. Citrus-derived essential oils, oleoresins, and natural extractives, including lime, are listed as GRAS for intended use in food. (27) Remember, we recommend diluting essential oils appropriately for maximum safety.

Additionally, most carrier oils help the essential oil penetrate and stick to the skin for more effective use. Citrus oils like lime may deteriorate with time, ultraviolet light exposure, and oxygen exposure. It’s best to buy smaller quantities you will use up fairly quickly. Lime essential oil makes a great gift, especially if you include a card with fun and healthy ideas for how to use it!

Application: For topical use, dilute lime oil well, avoid the eyes and mucous membranes, choose steam-distilled lime for sun-exposed skin, and avoid casual internal use unless the oil is labeled for ingestion and you understand proper solubilizing and dosing.

Lime Essential Oil FAQs

What is lime essential oil used for?

Lime essential oil is commonly used for uplifting aromatherapy, stress support, mood support, natural cleaning, oral-care recipes, deodorants, body-care blends, digestive support, weight-loss support routines, and antioxidant-rich skin care. Research also supports antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, metabolic, and cancer-fighting activity in laboratory and preclinical settings.

Is lime essential oil good for stress?

Yes. Lime essential oil is rich in d-limonene, and d-limonene has shown measurable anti-stress effects in animal research. Lime’s bright citrus aroma also makes it a wonderful oil for diffuser blends, personal inhalers, emotional detox routines, and family reset moments.

Can lime essential oil help with weight loss?

Lime essential oil may support weight-loss efforts as part of a healthy lifestyle. Animal research suggests lime essential oil may help suppress weight gain, and human research has studied cumin and lime capsules in overweight adults. D-limonene research also points to healthy triglyceride, cholesterol, glucose, and metabolic pathways. It works best alongside nutrition, movement, sleep, hydration, and emotional healing.

Is lime essential oil antibacterial?

Yes. Lime and Citrus aurantifolia essential oil preparations have shown antibacterial and antifungal activity in research. Lime is especially useful in natural cleaning blends, oral-care recipes, hand soaps, and body-care products when used correctly.

Can I put lime essential oil directly on my skin?

No. Lime essential oil should be diluted before topical use. Cold-pressed lime can be phototoxic, meaning it may increase sun sensitivity when applied to skin before UV exposure. For leave-on skin products, steam-distilled lime is usually the safer choice.

Is lime essential oil phototoxic?

Cold-pressed or expressed lime oil can be phototoxic. Steam-distilled lime oil is not considered phototoxic in the same way because steam distillation removes non-volatile furocoumarins. For sun-exposed skin, use steam-distilled lime or follow very conservative dilution guidance.

Can you ingest lime essential oil?

Only use lime essential oil internally if it is a high-quality oil labeled for ingestion, properly diluted or solubilized, and used in very small amounts. Essential oils do not disperse safely in plain water on their own. For everyday use, fresh lime juice, lime zest, and whole-food citrus are often the better place to start.

Is lime essential oil safe for kids?

Lime essential oil can be used around children when properly diluted and used with common sense. Diffusion is usually the easiest method. Use fewer drops, diffuse intermittently, keep oils away from the face and eyes, and avoid phototoxic cold-pressed lime on sun-exposed skin.

Is lime essential oil safe for pets?

Use caution. Cats may be especially sensitive to essential oils, including citrus oils such as lime. Do not apply lime oil to pets without guidance from an essential-oil-literate veterinarian, and always make sure animals can leave the room when diffusing.

What oils blend well with lime essential oil?

Lime blends beautifully with bergamot, lemon, orange, grapefruit, peppermint, spearmint, ginger, frankincense, ylang ylang, lavender, geranium, rosemary, basil, cilantro, coriander, vanilla absolute, and other citrus or herbaceous oils.
