QUICK SUMMARY
This Homemade Carpet Spot Cleaner With Essential Oils is a simple, non-toxic foam cleaner made with white vinegar, hot purified or distilled water, unscented liquid castile soap or natural dish soap, and a few drops of essential oils.
Many conventional carpet cleaners, stain removers, carpet fresheners, and fragranced cleaning products can add volatile organic compounds, harsh solvents, synthetic fragrances, and other unwanted chemicals to the air your family breathes. That matters because carpet is where children crawl, pets nap, and families live life.
The best way to use this homemade carpet spot cleaner is to whip it into a foam, scrub the foam gently into the carpet stain, and wipe with a damp rag. Always test a hidden area first, avoid over-wetting carpet, and choose essential oils that fit your family’s needs, such as tea tree, lemon, eucalyptus, pine, fir needle, or citronella.

If you live in an active house as I do, you’re bound to wind up with carpet stains. Food spills, muddy shoes, pet messes, art projects, and everyday family life all seem to find their way to the carpet sooner or later.
A carpet cleaner is a must-have for any busy family, but most store-bought brands contain harmful additives that don’t belong in the air. The EPA notes that many cleaning, disinfecting, degreasing, and fragranced household products can release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, while you use them and even while they are stored. Indoor VOC exposure has been associated with symptoms such as eye and respiratory irritation, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, and memory impairment. (1)
Here’s the thing: a cleaner home should not require a more toxic home. This is one of those simple stewardship areas where we can reduce the toxic burden in our homes without making life complicated. A 2023 study comparing conventional and “green” cleaning products found that conventional products generally emitted more VOCs than green products, especially fragrance-free products. (2)
My Homemade Carpet Spot Cleaner With Essential Oils is the perfect way to get your carpets stain-free, naturally. It’s gentle enough that even little ones can help wipe when supervised. Not only does this DIY help remove stains, but it also freshens carpets and makes them smell brand new!
3 Toxins in Carpet Cleaners
It’s important to be aware of what chemicals are in your carpet cleaner. After all, carpets are where a lot of life happens in the home. Crawling, walking, playing..all are made better by cushy carpet! Many store-bought cleaners contain horrific chemicals that can negatively affect occupants of the house. Here are a few of the top offenders.
1. Naphthalene
This toxin can quickly dissolve dirt, so it has been used in cleaning and deodorizing products. Even short-term exposure to naphthalene by inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact is associated with hemolytic anemia, damage to the liver, and neurological damage. Symptoms of acute exposure can include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malaise, confusion, anemia, jaundice, convulsions, and coma. (3)
God created our bodies to give warning signals about poisonous substances, and this is a perfect example! If a cleaning product makes your head hurt, burns your nose, or makes you feel queasy, listen to your body. There are natural ways to loosen dirt that won’t harm you.
2. Synthetic Fragrances
To cover up the scent of chemicals, companies add more toxins through synthetic fragrances. There isn’t a lot of transparency in this area. The FDA explains that fragrance and flavor ingredients can often be listed simply as “Fragrance” or “Flavor” because fragrance formulas may be treated as trade secrets. The FDA also notes that even some products labeled “unscented” may contain fragrance ingredients added to mask unpleasant odors. (4)
That means the word “fragrance” on a label does not tell you exactly what you are breathing.
Essential oils are my top replacement for artificial fragrances; no nasty side effects are involved when they’re used wisely and in small amounts!
3. Perchloroethylene
Perchloroethylene, also called tetrachloroethylene or PERC, is a degreasing solvent used in dry cleaning and some products that remove oils from fabrics. It is not something I want lingering in my home environment.
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry states that EPA has classified tetrachloroethylene as “likely to be carcinogenic in humans by all routes of exposure.” (5) Short-term exposure can affect the nervous system, and long-term exposure has been linked with concerns involving mood, memory, attention, reaction time, and vision. (6)
Reality check: a cleaner carpet is not worth sacrificing indoor air quality. When a simple homemade carpet spot cleaner can handle everyday spills, that is an easy swap to make.
Best Essential Oils for Carpet Spot Cleaner
Essential oils are optional, but in my opinion, they make a huge difference! They make a very basic cleaner smell amazing. Plus, essential oils can help clean. Here are some of our favorite EOs to use in this recipe. I encourage you to experiment and find what combination works best for your family.
Use only 3 drops total in this recipe. More is not better, especially on carpet where children and pets may spend time. A little goes a long way.
- Tea tree essential oil is an anti-fungal essential oil that helps fight musty odors and fungal concerns. Research reviews describe tea tree oil as having antimicrobial and antifungal activity, which is why it is one of our go-to oils for natural cleaning blends. (7) It also deodorizes, so it works great on smelly stains, like pet messes.
- Lemon essential oil is bright, fresh, and clean-smelling. Research on Citrus limon essential oil continues to show antibacterial potential, including vapor-phase antimicrobial activity in lab settings. (8) It leaves the room smelling citrus fresh, plus it’s a great mood booster.
- Eucalyptus essential oil has earned its place in natural home care. One household study found that a eucalyptus oil laundry soak dramatically reduced live dust mites recovered from wool blankets. (9) This doesn’t make a carpet spot cleaner a complete dust-mite treatment plan, but it does explain why eucalyptus is such a great oil for fresh, clean-smelling home DIYs. This EO pairs beautifully with lemon.
- Pine or Fir Needle essential oil is fresh, woodsy, and uplifting. It leaves a pleasant smell and may bring back fond memories of your Mom cleaning with a pine-scented cleaner, without the fake fragrance!
- Citronella essential oil wards off bugs, making it useful for pest control. Reviews of essential oils as arthropod repellents include citronella among the plant-based oils studied for insect-repelling activity. (10) We use this often during warmer months.
Application: My favorite carpet spot blend is 1 drop tea tree, 1 drop lemon, and 1 drop eucalyptus. For a fresh forest scent, try 1 drop lemon, 1 drop fir needle, and 1 drop pine. For warmer months, try 1 drop citronella, 1 drop lemon, and 1 drop tea tree.
Safe Carpet Cleaning Ingredients 101
These simple ingredients are found in most pantries. They’re also highly cost-effective, making this recipe a must for anyone!
Organic White Distilled Vinegar: Vinegar is a natural deodorizer, and it helps loosen tough stains due to its acidity. White vinegar is what this recipe calls for, as other colors may end up making a stain worse. You wouldn’t want to turn a simple dirt stain into a balsamic vinegar mess! If you’re worried about a vinegar smell, don’t be. Essential oils help balance the scent, and the vinegar odor fades as the carpet dries.
Hot Purified or Distilled Water: When possible, I recommend using distilled or purified water. Distilled water helps reduce mineral residue, and purified water is a simple way to keep your DIYs cleaner and more consistent. Hot water also helps the soap foam, and the foam is the magic of this recipe.
Organic Unscented Liquid Castile Soap: Liquid soap gives our cleaner its excellent foam! You can use organic unscented liquid castile soap. If you’ve made some of my other DIYs, you probably have a bottle or two on hand! I’d like to caution that, in my experience, organic castile soap did not foam up as well as natural dish soap.
The Carpet and Rug Institute warns that some cleaning products can leave residues that attract soil, and they recommend rinsing with plain water after using cleaning solutions. (11) That is why this recipe uses foam, not a carpet-soaking liquid, and why we wipe with a damp rag at the end.
Essential Oils: You can use any essential oils from the suggestions above or create your own custom blend. We’d love to hear what you come up with! Essential oils are an excellent replacement for synthetic fragrances and make your home smell just as good.

Notes
How to Use Homemade Carpet Spot Cleaner
Before using any homemade carpet cleaner, test it on a small hidden area first. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends pretesting spot-removal solutions in an inconspicuous area and watching for color transfer or carpet damage before using the solution on the main stain. (12)
For fresh spills, blot first. Don’t grind the mess deeper into the fibers. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends blotting instead of scrubbing because rubbing can push stains deeper and rough up carpet texture. (11)
Step One: Add All Ingredients
Add the vinegar, distilled water, natural soap, and essential oils to your stand mixer bowl or a bowl in which you can run a hand mixer.
Use a clean bowl and measure carefully. This recipe is simple, but a little soap goes a long way on carpet.
Step Two: Create Foam
Whip the ingredients on high to create a lot of foam. Your mixture should look like the picture above. You want a lot of foam because that’s what you’ll use to clean the carpet.
This is important: don’t pour the liquid onto the carpet. Use the foam. Foam lets you work on the spot without soaking the carpet backing.
Step Three: Scrub the Carpet
Use a stiff cleaning brush to scrub the foam into the carpet to remove stains.
For delicate carpet, rugs, or upholstery, use a gentler touch. Work from the outside of the spot toward the center so you don’t spread the stain.
Step Four: Wipe and Repeat as Needed
Wipe the foam off with a damp rag. If the stain is stubborn, you may need to repeat the process or let the cleaner sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
Use plain water on your rag for the final wipe to help remove soap residue, and let the carpet dry completely before kids or pets play on it.
Notes:
- This cleaner is safe for furniture too. I recommend testing the cleaner on a small corner to ensure it doesn’t change the fabric.
- You can store the leftover foam in a glass jar. Over time, the foam will deflate and return to a liquid form. To reactivate the foam, shake the jar or mix again.
- For deep pet urine, moldy carpet, dye stains, large spills, or water damage, address the root problem and consider professional cleaning. A homemade cleaner is for everyday spots, not major remediation.
Homemade Carpet Spot Cleaner FAQs
What is the best homemade carpet spot cleaner?
The best homemade carpet spot cleaner for everyday stains is a simple foam made with white vinegar, hot purified or distilled water, unscented liquid soap, and a few drops of essential oils. Whip the ingredients into foam, scrub the foam gently into the spot, then wipe with a damp rag.
Can vinegar remove carpet stains?
White vinegar can help loosen some everyday carpet stains because it is acidic. Use white vinegar only, test a hidden area first, and avoid soaking the carpet.
Can I use this homemade carpet cleaner on rugs?
Yes, you can use it on many rugs, but always test a hidden area first. Some rugs, dyes, and natural fibers are more delicate than standard carpet.
Can I use this carpet spot cleaner on furniture?
Yes, it may work on some fabric furniture, but test first on a hidden corner. Use only the foam, wipe with a damp white cloth, and avoid over-wetting upholstery.
Is this carpet cleaner safe around kids?
This is a much better option than heavily fragranced conventional carpet cleaners, but children should still be supervised. Keep essential oils and the finished cleaner out of reach, and let the carpet dry before little ones play on it.
Is this carpet cleaner safe around pets?
Use caution with pets. Keep pets away while cleaning, use only 3 drops of essential oils total, wipe the area well, and let the carpet dry completely. Do not use this directly on pet bedding or on animals.
What essential oils are best for carpet cleaning?
Tea tree, lemon, eucalyptus, pine, fir needle, and citronella are great choices. Tea tree is excellent for musty smells, lemon is bright and fresh, eucalyptus smells clean, pine and fir needle give a classic evergreen aroma, and citronella is useful during warmer months.
Will vinegar make my carpet smell?
The vinegar smell fades as the carpet dries. Essential oils help soften the scent, and using only the foam keeps the vinegar from overwhelming the room.
Should I scrub or blot carpet stains?
Blot fresh spills first. For this recipe, gently work the foam into the spot, then wipe and blot with a damp white cloth. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can damage carpet fibers and spread the stain.
Can this remove old stains?
It can help with some old stains, but set-in stains may require repeated applications or professional cleaning. The sooner you treat a spot, the better your chances of removing it.
Can I use more essential oils for a stronger smell?
No. Three drops total is enough for this recipe. Carpet holds scent, and more essential oil is not automatically better or safer.
