Reading Time: 7 minutes

QUICK SUMMARY

The best essential oils for nausea include ginger, peppermint, spearmint, cardamom, and lemon. Research on aromatherapy for nausea is strongest in postoperative settings, where inhaling ginger, peppermint, and blended digestive oils has helped reduce nausea severity and the need for anti-nausea medication in several studies.

A researched blend of ginger, spearmint, peppermint, and cardamom essential oils is especially helpful because these oils support digestion in complementary ways. Ginger is a classic stomach-soothing oil, peppermint and spearmint are cooling digestive oils, and cardamom has been studied for nausea and retching around surgery.

For quick support, diffuse 1 drop each of ginger, spearmint, peppermint, and cardamom, or make the Stomach Bug Nausea Relief Remedy Roll-On below so you can keep a natural stomach-soothing blend ready when nausea hits.

We’ve talked a lot about essential oils for nausea in my book Heal Your Gut with Essential Oils and in my Heal Your Gut Summit. This is an issue I get asked about regularly by people who want to stop taking Tums and Pepto-Bismol on a daily basis.

Reality check: if you are reaching for over-the-counter stomach relief every day, your body is trying to tell you something. Nausea, reflux, bloating, and an upset stomach can all be signs that your digestive system needs deeper support. That is why we always start with gut health, nutrition, hydration, stress relief, and wise natural remedies instead of just covering up symptoms.

Thankfully, my research led me to a researched gut health roll-on recipe that you can use to help combat the issues going on in your gut that cause upset stomach and nausea!

Essential Oil for Nausea and Stomachaches

While there are many great oils for gut health and soothing upset stomach, there are a few that actually work better when used together! Cardamom and peppermint are a well-known one-two punch for nausea and digestive upset, and ginger is one of my all-time favorites for bloating and nausea because it’s such a gentle oil.

Here’s the thing: nausea is not just annoying. It can interfere with eating, drinking, healing, traveling, pregnancy, surgery recovery, and everyday family life. And while medications have their place, many people are looking for a simple, natural option they can use quickly when their stomach starts to turn.

In fact, one clinical study evaluated a special blend of gut health oils and tested them synergistically compared to a placebo. (1) Postoperative nausea is a common complication of anesthesia and surgery. Unfortunately, prescription drugs don’t always do the trick, so researchers are starting to evaluate natural therapies like essential oils to see if they can help.

This particular study took 303 patients and gave them a gauze pad saturated with a randomly chosen aromatherapy agent. They were told to inhale deeply 3 times and measured their results in 5 minutes. They found that a blend of essential oils of ginger, spearmint, peppermint, and cardamom performed wonderfully, and people were less likely to take anti-nausea medications if they simply inhaled this aromatherapy blend! (1)

That original finding still matters today. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that aromatherapy reduced the severity of postoperative nausea, with ginger, lavender, and peppermint standing out in subgroup analysis. Vomiting episodes were not significantly reduced, and the certainty of evidence was low, but the direction of the research continues to support aromatherapy as a helpful complementary tool for nausea relief. (2)

More recent research keeps pointing in the same direction. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis reported that inhaled peppermint essential oil appears to be a promising complementary therapy for nausea and vomiting in postoperative, chemotherapy, and pregnancy-related settings. (3) Ginger essential oil inhalation has also been shown to reduce nausea and vomiting scores in abdominal surgery patients during the first 6 hours after surgery. (4) And cardamom inhalation therapy helped alleviate nausea and retching in women during the cesarean surgical continuum. (5)

Put simply, this is why we love blending these oils. They are not random “nice smells.” They are God-given plant compounds with a long history of digestive use and a growing body of research showing real, measurable nausea-soothing potential.

Why Ginger, Peppermint, Spearmint & Cardamom Work Together

The best essential oils for nausea are often the oils that have a track record for calming the stomach, cooling digestive discomfort, and helping the nervous system settle down.

Ginger essential oil is warm, spicy, and deeply associated with nausea relief. It is one of the first oils I think about for queasiness, motion sickness feelings, bloating, and that “my stomach just feels off” sensation. Research on inhaled ginger essential oil has found benefits for postoperative nausea and vomiting. (4)

Peppermint essential oil is cooling, refreshing, and traditionally used for digestive comfort. It is one of the most popular oils for nausea because the aroma is bright, strong, and fast-acting. Peppermint also has a long history of use for digestive spasms and IBS support when used appropriately.

Spearmint essential oil is a gentler mint that pairs beautifully with peppermint. It gives the blend a fresh digestive aroma without being quite as intense. For families who find peppermint a little too strong on its own, spearmint essential oil can soften the blend while still supporting the stomach-soothing theme.

Cardamom essential oil is spicy, sweet, and warming. It has been used traditionally for digestion, and human research has evaluated cardamom inhalation for nausea and retching around cesarean surgery. (5)

Application: When your stomach feels unsettled, start with aroma. Take slow, deep breaths while inhaling the blend, use a diffuser, or apply a properly diluted roll-on to the abdomen. Slow breathing matters because nausea often worsens when stress, shallow breathing, and nervous system tension take over.

How to Use Essential Oils for Nausea

To enjoy this researched soothing blend of essential oil for nausea, simply put 1 drop of each into your diffuser and use it throughout the day or when you have a tendency to be nauseous.

You can also use this blend in a personal aromatherapy inhaler, especially if nausea hits when you travel, sit in traffic, recover from a stomach bug, or deal with occasional queasiness away from home. Keep it in your purse, desk drawer, diaper bag, or travel kit so it is ready when you need it.

Alternatively, you can make this Stomach Bug Nausea Relief Remedy Roll-On so you’ll have on-the-go soothing aid whenever you need it!

Use the roll-on over the abdomen and massage clockwise. This is a simple way to combine the aromatic benefits of essential oils with gentle touch, which many people find comforting when their stomach is upset.

Safety note: For children, pregnancy, nursing, liver disease, reflux that is severe or persistent, medication use, or ongoing nausea that does not resolve, work with your health care provider and use essential oils conservatively. Avoid getting peppermint near the face of infants or very young children, and do not use essential oils internally unless you are trained and confident in safe use.

Essential Oils for Nausea FAQs

What essential oil is best for nausea?

Ginger essential oil is one of the best essential oils for nausea, especially when the stomach feels unsettled, bloated, or queasy. Peppermint, spearmint, cardamom, and lemon are also excellent choices. For many people, a blend works better than one oil alone.

Can peppermint essential oil help nausea?

Yes, peppermint essential oil may help nausea when inhaled. Recent research suggests peppermint oil inhalation is a promising complementary therapy for nausea and vomiting in several settings, including postoperative recovery, chemotherapy-related nausea, and pregnancy-related nausea. (3)

How do you use essential oils for an upset stomach?

The easiest ways are inhalation, diffusion, and diluted topical use. Add a nausea blend to a diffuser, inhale from a personal aromatherapy inhaler, or apply a diluted roll-on to the abdomen and massage clockwise.

Can I put essential oils directly on my stomach?

Do not apply essential oils undiluted. Use a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil. A roll-on recipe is a convenient way to keep the blend properly diluted and ready to use.

What is the best essential oil blend for nausea?

A researched nausea blend includes ginger, spearmint, peppermint, and cardamom essential oils. In a randomized trial, this blend helped postoperative patients experience nausea relief and reduced the need for anti-nausea medication. (1)

Can I use essential oils for stomach bug nausea?

Essential oils can be a helpful comfort measure during stomach bug nausea, especially by inhalation or diluted topical use. Focus on fluids, rest, and gentle nourishment as tolerated. Seek care quickly for dehydration, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, high fever, or nausea and vomiting that persist.

Are essential oils enough if I have nausea every day?

Daily nausea deserves a deeper look. Essential oils may help soothe symptoms, but chronic nausea can be connected to reflux, gallbladder issues, pregnancy, medications, migraines, food sensitivities, infections, or other health concerns. Use oils as part of a broader gut-health plan and get help identifying the root cause.
