Best Healing Natural Oils Essential for Aromatherapy Wellness
QUICK SUMMARY

The 10 best essential oils for natural healing are clove, eucalyptus, frankincense, lavender, lemon, oregano, peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood, and tea tree. Between them they cover pain, anxiety, nausea, digestion, breathing, and skin, and most now have human trials behind them.

The calming oils have the deepest research: a 2023 analysis of 44 randomized trials and 3,419 people found that essential oils significantly lowered anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate. (1) Use them by inhaling, by applying them diluted to the skin, and, for some oils, carefully by mouth.

We truly believe God designed our bodies to thrive when we align with His natural design. One of the most powerful ways we support our family’s wellness is with essential oils, concentrated plant medicines that we use to cleanse, calm, and heal.

After 23 years of research and three books on the topic, these are the 10 oils we would never want to be without, what the research shows for each one, and how we use them at home.

10 Best Essential Oils for Healing

Essential oils contain complex mixtures of naturally occurring molecules, and each oil has its own strengths. The list is long, but after careful research and years of practical use, we’ve narrowed it down to 10 favorites. Yours may be different, but this is a great place to start. You can learn more about these and other fabulous essential oils in our book, The Healing Power of Essential Oils.

If you want the oils of Scripture specifically, start with our 12 healing oils of the Bible. This list is the modern research companion to it.

1. Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)

Clove essential oil is rich in eugenol and has been a dental remedy for generations, and the research is catching up. In a 2026 randomized trial, children aged 7 to 10 had clove oil, or one of two standard numbing gels, applied to the gums before a dental injection. Clove oil eased pain just as well as the medicated gels, and the researchers called it “a safe, natural, and cost-effective alternative.” (2)

A 2025 systematic review of 21 dental studies placed clove oil among the plant medicines with the strongest pain-relieving evidence in dentistry. (3) Laboratory research adds strong antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity. (4)

Safety Tip: Clove is one of the hot oils, so always dilute it before it touches skin or gums. If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, do not ingest clove oil.

2. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)

Eucalyptus has a long history of traditional use and is one of the most recognizable essential oils for respiratory support. Its main compound in most eucalyptus oils, 1,8-cineole, is the reason it opens the airways and fights inflammation.

It works for pain too. In a 2022 trial, 70 adults with rheumatoid arthritis inhaled 1 mL of eucalyptus oil or a placebo for five minutes, three times a day, for one month alongside their usual care. By weeks three and four the eucalyptus group had significantly less pain and a better quality of life. (5)

3. Frankincense (Boswellia carterii, frereana & sacra)

Overshadowed for generations by its role in the Christmas story, frankincense is finally receiving the scientific attention this Biblical tree deserves.

In a 2023 randomized trial, 91 adults with chronic low back pain received two back massages a week with frankincense and myrrh oils, a plain jojoba massage, or no massage. The frankincense and myrrh group had significantly less pain and disability than both of the other groups. (6)

The cancer research is just as exciting, though it is still in the lab. A 2025 study found that frankincense essential oil killed breast cancer cells in a dish and reduced the size of breast tumors in mice. (7) No human trial has tested it as a cancer treatment, so we cannot extrapolate dosing to people yet. Keep in mind that the boswellic acid studies on frankincense supplements use the resin, which is chemically different from the distilled oil.

4. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Well-known for its soothing, calming properties, lavender is one of the best-studied essential oils in human research. The 2023 network analysis of 44 randomized trials ranked lavender among the oils that significantly lowered anxiety, alongside jasmine, bitter orange, and rose. (1)

That is why lavender is the first oil we reach for when someone in our home can’t settle down or can’t sleep.

5. Lemon (Citrus limon)

Various citrus essential oils are favorites for their bright aromas and household applications. Lemon essential oil, typically expressed from the peel, is rich in limonene.

In a 2023 trial, 90 patients having surgery for a broken leg either inhaled lemon oil every two hours from the morning of surgery through the next 16 hours or received usual care. The lemon group had less pain, less nausea and vomiting, and needed fewer anti-nausea drugs. (8)

Safety Tip: Cold-pressed lemon oil is known to be phototoxic, so if you apply it to your skin, choose steam-distilled lemon or avoid direct sunlight for at least 12 hours if your skin is prone to a photosensitive reaction.

6. Oregano (Origanum vulgare)

Oregano essential oil is rich in carvacrol and thymol, depending on the chemotype, and it is one of the most powerful antimicrobial oils there is. A 2022 review gathered the research on oregano oil against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and credited carvacrol with most of the effect. (9) A 2025 systematic review found the same strength against fungi, including Candida and Aspergillus. (10)

Those are laboratory findings, but they explain why this oil has earned so much attention at a time when antibiotic resistance worries doctors worldwide.

Safety Tip: Oregano is one of the hottest oils on the skin and mucous membranes, so always dilute it well. The essential oil is far more concentrated than the kitchen herb.

7. Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

Peppermint is one of the most versatile essential oils in our home. Its cooling aroma makes it a favorite for headaches, focus, and tummy troubles.

The digestive research is strong. A 2022 meta-analysis of 10 randomized trials and 1,030 patients with irritable bowel syndrome found that peppermint oil capsules beat placebo for overall symptoms and for abdominal pain. Only four people needed to take peppermint oil for one extra person to feel better overall. (11)

Safety Tip: Peppermint can aggravate acid reflux, so skip the capsules if you have GERD, and keep peppermint away from the faces of infants.

8. Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus)

Rosemary has been used traditionally for memory, circulation, hair care, and common aches and pains. It calms as well as it focuses. In a 2024 trial of 236 surgery patients, three drops of rosemary oil inhaled for 30 minutes before surgery lowered anxiety more than calming music did. (12)

Rosemary also has a long-term human study for low blood pressure. In 2014, Spanish researchers followed 32 people with primary hypotension who used rosemary oil for 72 weeks and saw their blood pressure rise toward normal along with better physical and mental quality of life. (13)

Safety Tip: Because rosemary can raise blood pressure, take care with it if you have high blood pressure or take medication for it.

9. Sandalwood (Santalum album)

Sandalwood has a long history in traditional wellness practices and is prized for its rich, grounding aroma. Its two santalol compounds give it its scent and most of its healing activity.

A 2024 review of the research describes sandalwood oil as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor in laboratory and animal studies. (14) Human trials are still few, so for now we use sandalwood mostly in calming blends and skin care, where its traditional use is strongest.

10. Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Last, but certainly not least, tea tree is one of the best-known essential oils for skin and topical cleansing. A 2023 review of 46 randomized trials found that tea tree mouthwashes limit dental plaque, 5 percent tea tree gels help treat gum disease alongside a dental cleaning, and tea tree regimens clear MRSA from the skin about as well as standard treatments. (15)

For acne, a 2026 meta-analysis of 7 studies and 445 patients found that tea tree oil reduced acne severity, and its side effects were mild and mostly local. (16)

Safety Tip: Tea tree is for the skin and the mouth rinse, not for swallowing. Use fresh oil, because oxidized tea tree is more likely to irritate.

These oils are some of our favorite natural tools, but they are not interchangeable. The plant species, chemotype, quality, route, dilution, and dose all matter, which is why we teach essential oils as a system rather than treating every bottle the same.

Uses & Applications of Healing Essential Oils

We teach three routes of essential oil use: inhalation, topical application, and internal use. The practical applications below are aromatic and topical.

  • Baths: 10 drops mixed with 1/4 cup of olive oil and 1 cup of salt makes fantastic aromatherapy for circulatory, muscular, respiratory, skin, and sleep problems in addition to calming your nerves. Avoid potent oils that could irritate the skin such as cinnamon, oregano, or clove; instead, use soothing oils like lavender and Roman chamomile.
  • Compresses: 10 drops in 1 Tbsp of high proof alcohol added to 4 oz. of water. Soak a cloth and apply for bruises, infections, aches, and pains.
  • Inhalations: 5 drops in a diffuser or in hot water for sinus or headache relief. Choose your more soothing oils for hot water inhalation usage, like in steam bowls, as hot oils could become quite irritating to the nasal passages used this way!
  • Salves: A 2% dilution is recommended, which is 12 drops per 1 ounce of oil, for relaxation and to alleviate joint/muscle soreness. Our guide on how to dilute essential oils has the full chart.

Internal use is a powerful route when it is done right. Never put undiluted essential oils in your mouth; instead, dilute two or three drops in an edible carrier oil and place the mixture in a capsule. Our guide to ingesting essential oils covers which oils, how much, and for how long.

Natural Healing Oils Through History

Essential oils as we know them today are relatively new on the long timeline of plant-based therapies. Ancient cultures used aromatic plants, infused oils, resins, incense, and balms, and Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Persians, Indians, and Chinese all developed rich traditions around fragrant medicinal plants. Persian and Arab scholars later made major advances in distillation.

Modern aromatherapy began with a French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé, who coined the word “aromatherapy” in the early 20th century. During both World Wars, essential oils were used to treat infected wounds, burns, and other injuries, a history traced in a 2025 review from the University of Cartagena in Colombia. (17) What our ancestors learned through observation, researchers now test in clinical trials, and as you saw above, many of those trials are confirming what God put in these plants all along.
