What is Matcha?

Matcha is a non-fermented Japanese tea used in various ceremonies. Made from Camellia senensis, the flavor comes from the fact that the leaves are not fermented and that they are grown in the shade during the last stage of the growth process. This helps to increase the chlorophyll content in the leaves and gives it its distinct flavor.
Because matcha is made from whole leaves that have been finely ground, you are actually ingesting the entire leaf. This means you’re getting more nutrients than if you simply steeped the leaves – as you do with regular tea – before discarding the leaves. Therefore matcha may provide even more health benefits than regular tea. And while the levels of catechins in matcha are lower than in traditional green tea due to the shading of leaves, they are still there in abundance. Plus, levels of other nutrients are higher, such as l-theanine, which produces a relaxed alertness (unlike the sometimes-jittery buzz of coffee).
The antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate, more commonly known as ECGC, can also help boost metabolism, making it more likely that you’ll tone up and slim down, especially if you are also exercising and eating a healthy diet at the same time. Note these benefits accrue to the green tea itself, not the green tea flavor … avoid sugary green tea snacks and anything made with extract or fake flavoring.

Fat-Burning Matcha Latte Ingredient Breakdown:
When you hear the word “latte,” you might think of fancy machines or at least some latte art. The truth is, you don’t need any of those things to make a fantastic vegan latte. This vegan is mixed using a blender! Besides a blender, you need matcha green tea powder, unsweetened almond milk beverage or creamer, vanilla or coconut flavored liquid stevia, and a couple of yummy essential oils.
What makes this drink fat burning? The answer to that question lies in the ingredients! Here’s what each one does for you.
Matcha Green Tea Powder: We went over a few of matcha’s benefits already, but here’s one more: If you’re an athlete, matcha will appeal to you because it can help build strength (3) and restore your body after an intense workout.
Unsweetened Almond or Coconut Milk Beverage: This keeps our drink dairy-free and creams it up beautifully. This type of beverage is usually labeled “creamer” at the grocery store. I prefer a blend that uses half coconut milk and half almond milk. You’ll want to purchase the unsweetened variety, so you aren’t ingesting any hidden sugars!
Purified or Distilled Water: I recommend using purified or distilled water in all our drink recipes. Regular tap water can contain harmful toxins that can set you back in your health journey rather than ahead. Our family uses the AquaTru system because it filters water effortlessly right from our tap!
Liquid Stevia: Liquid stevia blends great in beverages. It’s a great way to sweeten a drink without raising your blood sugar. I love how many different flavors of stevia there are! In this recipe, vanilla or coconut stevia tastes divine.
Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil: Cinnamon bark essential oil is rich in antioxidants. It complements the flavor of matcha so well! Cinnamon bark oil is from, you guessed it, the bark of a Cinnamomum tree. It contains a lot more antidiabetic properties than its cousin, cinnamon leaf oil. This oil is excellent for gut health!
Peppermint Essential Oil: Peppermint oil isn’t just for the holidays. You can use this oil all year round to help promote proper digestion. The smell of peppermint can help you feel full faster, and this oil is a great pick-me-up!
Ceylon Cinnamon: Why Ceylon cinnamon? Ceylon cinnamon is rarer than your everyday cinnamon. Its flavor isn’t as spicy as regular cinnamon, and it gives drinks a bit of sweetness. Cinnamon helps balance your blood sugar levels, (4) and when your blood sugar levels are stable, your whole body can function better.
Safety Note about Essential Oils

How to Make a Fat-Burning Matcha Latte
My family likes to drink many hot drinks, so I keep an electric glass kettle full of hot water on our counter. Having hot water at the ready makes crafting vegan lattes so easy! This recipe serves two, so you can share it with a friend.
- 1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder
- 2 cups unsweetened vanilla-flavored almond or coconut milk beverage, heated, or unsweetened almond or coconut creamer
- 2 cups boiling purified or distilled water
- 4 dropperfuls vanilla-or coconut-flavored liquid stevia
- 2 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
- 2 drops peppermint essential oil
- ½ teaspoon ground Ceylon cinnamon plus more (optional) for garnish
- Pour the matcha powder, almond milk, boiling water, stevia, essential oils, and cinnamon into a blender. Blend for 30 seconds until frothy.
- Pour into two 16-ounce glasses. Sprinkle more cinnamon on top, if desired. Serve immediately.
Immune-Boosting Matcha Latte: Add 2 drops of our Immune-Boosting Blend to the latte. To make the blend, place 10 drops each of cinnamon bark, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, orange, and rosemary essential oils in a 5-ml bottle. Gently shake to combine.
Pumpkin-Spiced Matcha Latte: Add 1 drop each of cinnamon leaf, clove, and ginger essential oils to the Fat-Burning Matcha Latte.
Nutpods and Califa Farms Better Half are both dairy-free half-and-half “creamers.” Be sure to use the unsweetened variety.
