Most importantly, after a digital cleansing thinking and attention turns inward or towards those around you, which is an important part of learning how to practice self-love.

Dr. Z and I always advocate for a diet that’s abundant in fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Dr. Z and I have our own rituals that we look forward to. For me, it might be a quiet morning with a cup of herbal tea, some time spent journaling, or making lists planning for my next gathering. For Dr. Z, it’s a few minutes of stretching and deep breathing before bed. These rituals aren’t just about relaxation—they’re about creating intentional moments where we can focus on ourselves and recharge.

You may need to adopt a growth mindset that says, “I am worth taking this time.” When you’re first learning how to practice self love that feels odd, but creating a self-care routine helps you establish a habit. Your self-care ritual doesn’t have to be elaborate; it just needs to be consistent and meaningful to you. The most important thing, is that you need to block time out of your schedule to do it.

Prioritize Restful Sleep

Sleep is the cornerstone of good health, yet it’s often the first thing we sacrifice when life gets busy. However, prioritizing restful sleep is crucial for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Without enough quality sleep, your body doesn’t have the chance to repair and rejuvenate, which can lead to a host of health issues.

Dr. Z and I always stress the importance of creating a sleep-friendly environment. This includes keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet or with serene noises, and establishing a calming bedtime routine. We also recommend avoiding screens for at least an hour before bed, as the blue light emitted can interfere with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.

Don’t worry about being perfect or producing something worthy of praise—just focus on the joy of the process and the fulfillment it brings.

Set Healthy Boundaries

Boundaries are an essential part of self-care. They help you protect your energy, raise your level of happiness, maintain your well-being, and communicate your needs to others. Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you’re shutting people out—it means you’re respecting yourself enough to know when to say yes and when to say no.

Dr. Z and I believe that healthy boundaries are the foundation of healthy relationships. They allow you to take care of yourself while still being there for others. It’s important to remember that setting boundaries is not selfish; it’s a necessary part of how to practice self love. Sometimes this may mean no technology during a date night or a digital-free dinner. What I do is I will check notifications on my phone when I go to the restroom to make sure the babysitter or kids didn’t text me with an emergency, and otherwise leave it off.  When you respect your own limits, you’re better equipped to give your best to others without feeling depleted or resentful.

Foster Positive Relationships

The people you surround yourself with have a significant impact on your self-esteem and overall happiness. Positive, loving relationships are those that uplift, support, and encourage you to be your best self. On the other hand, toxic relationships can drain your energy and undermine your self-worth.

Dr. Z and I have always prioritized nurturing our relationships with people who share our values and bring positivity into our lives. We believe that it’s important to surround yourself with those who genuinely care about your well-being and respect your boundaries. The Bible has a lot to say about friendships, as well as romantic, loving relationships, and we take these principles to heart as much as possible in our lives.

It’s also important to recognize when a relationship is no longer serving you. It’s okay to distance yourself from negative influences and seek out connections that bring joy and fulfillment. By fostering healthy relationships, you’re choosing to invest in your happiness and emotional health, which is a powerful act of self-love.

Practice Gratitude Daily

When it comes to ways of practicing self-love, a daily gratitude practice is highlight effective. Like our healing affirmations, we know that the power of prayer is profound. By focusing on the positive aspects of your life, you shift your mindset from scarcity to abundance. Developing a consistent practice of thankfulness helps you appreciate the good things in your life, reinforcing content and self-worth.

Dr. Z and I often incorporate gratitude into our daily routines by keeping a gratitude journal or simply taking a few moments each day to reflect on what we’re thankful for. This practice doesn’t require much time but can have a profound impact on your mental and emotional well-being during difficult times. Often in the mornings when I’m driving the kids to school, I will ask them to tell me three things they are thankful for, grateful for, etc. Then each person gets a chance to pray before we get to school. Other times, I’ll set out our gratitude bowl, and have all the kids write something they are grateful for. I always start out the year with it, plus on someone’s birthday we go around and each member of the family states a reason they are grateful for that person.
