QUICK SUMMARY
This homemade bathroom cleaner with essential oils is one of my favorite non-toxic swaps for everyday bathroom messes. Castile soap lifts grime, baking soda adds gentle scrubbing power and helps with odors, and essential oils such as tea tree, lemon, orange, lemon eucalyptus, and lemon myrtle bring fresh fragrance plus documented antimicrobial activity in laboratory research.
There is one important distinction: cleaning is not the same thing as EPA-registered disinfection. This DIY is designed for routine cleaning, freshening, deodorizing, and removing everyday soil. If someone in your home is sick or you need a product proven to disinfect against a specific pathogen, use an EPA-registered disinfectant according to its label directions. (1)
That does not make this DIY less useful. EPA itself notes that routine cleaning is appropriate for many household surfaces and that disinfectants are most useful where contamination risk is higher, such as bathroom fixtures and high-touch surfaces. (2) For daily life, I would much rather reach for a simple homemade cleaner than fill a small bathroom with heavy synthetic fragrance and unnecessary chemical exposure.
Because this is a water-based DIY without a broad-spectrum preservative system, make reasonable-size batches, use a clean bottle, keep the spray away from heat and direct light, and replace it if the smell, color, or texture changes.
Bathrooms can easily be the grossest room in the house.
Hair in the drain, toothpaste residue in the sink, water spots around the faucet, and little ones who miss the toilet are everyday occurrences in some homes, including mine!
My Homemade Bathroom Cleaner With Essential Oils is a lifesaver.
I use this cleaner all the time to clean, freshen, and deodorize the surfaces that seem to get dirty five minutes after I wipe them down.
And because bathrooms are usually smaller rooms with limited airflow, what we spray into the air matters to me.
I do not want to trade one kind of mess for another by filling the room with harsh fumes, artificial fragrance, or a long ingredient list I would never choose if I were formulating the cleaner myself.
That is the beauty of DIY.
You know what is in the bottle.
You make only what you need.
You can customize the essential oils.
And you have a practical non-toxic cleaner ready whenever the toothpaste, toilet, counter, or sink needs attention.

What to Know About Conventional Bathroom Cleaners
Store-bought bathroom cleaners vary widely.
Some are simple detergents. Some are fragranced sprays. Some are acids or alkaline cleaners. Others are EPA-registered disinfectants designed to kill specific microorganisms when used exactly as directed.
So I would not say every conventional bathroom cleaner contains the same “toxins.”
What I will say is that many commercial cleaning products expose families to ingredients we prefer to avoid when a simpler solution works perfectly well for everyday cleaning.
A 2024 review of cleaning-product chemistry notes that cleaning and disinfecting products can release volatile and semi-volatile chemicals into indoor air and that occupational exposure has been associated with respiratory concerns such as asthma and rhinitis. Spray products can be especially relevant because they put fine droplets and volatile compounds directly into the breathing zone. (3)
That matters in a bathroom.
It is often a small room.
You are close to the sprayed surface.
And the door may be closed while you clean.
Triclosan
Triclosan is an antimicrobial chemical with a complicated regulatory history.
FDA's 2016 consumer antiseptic-wash rule determined that 19 active ingredients, including triclosan and triclocarban, could no longer be marketed in over-the-counter consumer antiseptic wash products without approved applications because manufacturers had not demonstrated the required safety and effectiveness for those uses. (4)
That FDA rule applied to consumer antiseptic washes such as antibacterial hand and body washes, not every household bathroom cleaner.
EPA separately regulates triclosan when it is used as a pesticide active ingredient in products intended to control bacteria, fungi, or mildew. (5)
The practical point for me is simple.
I do not need a triclosan-based product for everyday bathroom grime when Castile soap, baking soda, and essential oils handle the routine cleaning jobs in our home.
Synthetic Fragrance
Synthetic fragrance is one of the first things I remove when we are making our home more non-toxic.
I would not describe every fragrance ingredient as a “toxin,” and the old claim that the word fragrance automatically represents “4,000 toxins” is too broad.
The real concern is that fragrance can represent a mixture of multiple ingredients, some of which may be irritants or sensitizers, and scented cleaning products add to the chemical mixture we breathe indoors.
EPA's Safer Choice program specifically evaluates fragrance ingredients and even offers a fragrance-free designation for qualifying products. The program recognizes that ingredients used at small percentages, including fragrance materials, can still matter when evaluating human and environmental health. (6)
That is one reason I love essential oils in DIY cleaning products.
I get to choose exactly what creates the scent.
No mystery perfume blend.
No overwhelming cloud hanging in a tiny bathroom.
Just a cleaner I actually enjoy using.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, is a surfactant used in some cleaning and personal-care products because it helps loosen oily soil and create foam.
Foam is not proof that something is cleaner.
And SLS is also widely used in dermatology research as a model irritant because it can disrupt the skin barrier and provoke irritant contact dermatitis under certain exposure conditions. (7, 8)
That does not mean every brief exposure to every SLS-containing product causes eczema or permanent eye damage.
It does support our preference for simpler formulas when we do not need a stronger surfactant system.
Cleaning Is Different From Disinfecting
This distinction is important for both safety and accuracy.
Cleaning removes dirt, grime, organic material, and many microbes from a surface.
Sanitizing reduces certain microorganisms to defined levels.
Disinfecting means using a product tested to destroy or irreversibly inactivate specified bacteria, fungi, or viruses on inanimate surfaces.
EPA regulates disinfectants as antimicrobial pesticides and requires efficacy data for approved disinfecting claims. (1)
This homemade cleaner is not EPA-registered and has not been tested against a standardized disinfectant protocol.
That is why I use it as our everyday cleaner, deodorizer, and freshening spray rather than promising it can kill a specific pathogen on command.
If there is vomit, diarrhea, a contagious illness, or another situation where true disinfection matters, clean the visible soil first and then use an appropriate EPA-registered disinfectant according to the label.
That is not abandoning non-toxic living.
It is using the right tool for the right job.
Homemade Bathroom Cleaner Ingredients

This bathroom cleaner is made of simple ingredients that will not break the bank.
You may already have every one of them in your pantry.
Non-toxic living should be accessible to real families with real budgets, and that is one of the reasons I love recipes like this.
Organic Unscented Liquid Castile Soap
Organic Unscented Liquid Castile Soap: This ingredient cleans dishes, floors, bathrooms, and so much more.
Castile soap is a surfactant-based cleaner that helps loosen oils, grime, toothpaste residue, and everyday soil so you can wipe them away.
I prefer unscented because it gives me control over the essential-oil blend rather than layering essential oils over a synthetic or pre-made fragrance.
You will want to keep a bottle of this liquid gold on hand.
Baking Soda
Baking Soda: Baking soda is a great natural cleaner because it is mildly abrasive.
It gives this recipe extra scrubbing power for sink residue, grime, and the little messes that seem to collect around bathroom fixtures.
Baking soda can also help neutralize some acidic odor compounds, which is one reason it works so well in deodorizing DIYs.
Purified or Distilled Water
Purified or Distilled Water: I prefer distilled or purified water in homemade cleaners whenever practical.
The biggest advantage in this recipe is consistency.
Tap-water mineral content varies from home to home. Hard water can leave mineral residue, react with soap, and make a formula look cloudy or behave differently.
Distilled water removes that variable.
Because this recipe contains water and no conventional broad-spectrum preservative system, use clean equipment and make fresh batches rather than storing a forgotten bottle indefinitely.
Essential Oils
Essential Oils: Essential oils are the cherry on top of a fantastic DIY.
They are not simply perfume.
Essential oils are chemically complex botanical extracts, and a large body of laboratory research documents antibacterial and antifungal activity across many oils and microorganisms. Tea tree oil is especially well studied, and lemon eucalyptus, lemon myrtle, lemongrass, citrus, and other oils also contain antimicrobial constituents. (9)
That said, essential-oil antimicrobial activity in a laboratory dish is not automatically the same thing as a validated household disinfectant claim.
Concentration, contact time, surface type, organic soil, formulation, and the organism being tested all matter.
For this DIY, I love essential oils because they complement the soap-and-baking-soda cleaning action, freshen the room, and give me a non-toxic fragrance I can customize.
Best Essential Oils for Bathroom Cleaning
Here are some of our favorite essential oils for cleaning.
I love using EOs because every cleaning session gives me the benefit of inhaling plant-based aromas instead of synthetic fragrance.
Orange Essential Oil
Orange has a bright, uplifting aroma that can make tough cleaning jobs feel a little less miserable.
Citrus oils also contain solvent-like terpenes that can help loosen greasy residues.
Because citrus oils can affect some finishes, always test a hidden spot before spraying a delicate surface.
Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon brightens any day with its fresh scent.
It works beautifully with baking soda in deodorizing blends and is one of the first oils I reach for when I want the bathroom to smell clean without artificial fragrance.
Lemon Eucalyptus or Lemon Myrtle
Lemon eucalyptus and lemon myrtle bring that beautiful combination of fresh citrus and deeper botanical notes.
Their essential oils contain compounds with documented antimicrobial activity, and lemon-eucalyptus-derived compounds are also widely studied for insect-repellent effects. (9)
Again, I use them here as part of a cleaning blend rather than claiming this homemade spray is an EPA-registered disinfectant.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea Tree has a fresh medicinal aroma that makes it a natural fit for bathroom cleaning.
Tea tree oil has broad antibacterial and antifungal activity in laboratory research and has been studied extensively against fungi and bacteria. (10)
That makes it one of my favorite oils in damp spaces where mildew and odor are constant concerns.
Other Bathroom Cleaning Blends
Use 25 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce of liquid.
- Key lime, opoponax, and vanilla absolute
- Geranium, lavender, rose absolute, and ylang ylang
- Lemon, lemon tea tree, lemongrass, and tea tree
These blends let you change the personality of the cleaner without changing the basic purpose of the recipe.
Want something bright? Choose citrus.
Want something floral? Use geranium, lavender, rose, and ylang ylang.
Want a sharper cleaning aroma? Reach for tea tree and lemongrass.
That is what makes homemade cleaners so much fun.

- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- 25 drops tea tree essential oil*
- 15 drops orange OR lemon essential oil (OR 7 drops of each)*

- 2 cups purified OR distilled water

- Combine the liquid soap, baking soda, and essential oils in the spray bottle and mix well.
- Pour in the water and shake well.
- Use as you would any other bathroom cleaner. Shake before each use.

- 20 drops key lime, 15 drops Opoponax, and 20 drops vanilla absolute or Co2
- 7 drops geranium, 25 drops lavender, 10 drops rose absolute, and 8 drops ylang ylang

Step One: Combine Ingredients

Combine the liquid soap, baking soda, and essential oils in a spray bottle and mix well. I recommend using amber or dark glass spray bottles for any cleaners that include essential oils.
EOs tend to break down plastic, and dark glass keeps the oils potent.
Step Two: Add Water

Pour in the distilled water, replace the lid, and shake well to combine. Shake before each use. Store in a dark place, like under the sink! Use as you would any other bathroom cleaner.

How to Use This Bathroom Cleaner Safely
This is a simple recipe, but a few habits make homemade cleaners work better and last longer.
Shake Before Each Use
Essential oils do not dissolve in water by themselves.
The Castile soap helps disperse them through the formula, but shaking before use helps redistribute everything before you spray.
Test Delicate Surfaces First
Natural does not mean compatible with every finish.
Always spot test natural stone, painted surfaces, specialty metals, wood, acrylic, or another delicate finish before spraying the entire area.
Baking soda is mildly abrasive, and essential oils can interact with some coatings and plastics.
Do Not Mix Cleaners Randomly
One of the most important cleaning-safety habits has nothing to do with this recipe specifically.
Do not assume that two cleaners become “extra strong” when combined.
Never mix bleach with ammonia or acids, and do not spray one cleaner directly over another unless you know the chemistry is compatible.
Rinse the surface when changing product types.
Use Ventilation
Even natural aromas can become overwhelming in a small room.
Turn on the exhaust fan, crack the door, or open a window when possible.
If an essential oil triggers coughing, headache, nausea, or irritation, stop using that blend and choose another.
Know When You Need Real Disinfection
For routine toothpaste, soap scum, splashes, odors, and everyday grime, I reach for this DIY.
When someone is sick or a surface has been contaminated with bodily fluids, that is a different job.
EPA recommends limiting disinfectant use to places where people are likely to come into contact with contaminated surfaces rather than using disinfectants indiscriminately for every general cleaning task. (2)
That is exactly the balance I want in a non-toxic home.
Clean routinely.
Disinfect strategically.
Do not fill the house with unnecessary chemical exposure just because marketing has trained us to believe every surface must be sterile.

This recipe has ingredients with cleaning and antimicrobial properties, but the finished DIY has not been tested or EPA-registered as a disinfectant. Use it for routine cleaning, freshening, deodorizing, and removing everyday soil. When you need validated disinfection against a specific pathogen, use an EPA-registered disinfectant according to the label.
What are the best essential oils for cleaning a bathroom?
Tea tree, lemon, orange, lemon eucalyptus, lemon myrtle, and lemongrass are some of our favorites. Tea tree is particularly useful when you want an oil with strong antibacterial and antifungal research, while citrus oils bring a bright clean aroma and useful solvent-like constituents.
Can essential oils kill bathroom germs?
Many essential oils inhibit bacteria and fungi in laboratory studies, and some formulations have shown significant antimicrobial activity on surfaces.
