Why a Homemade Soda Recipe?

I’m sure you’ve seen the bright displays of regular soda at your local grocery store. There are many options, and some of them are even healthy. Why DIY soda? There are many benefits to incorporating this practice, but here are some of our primary motivators.

Reduces Carbon Footprint

There’s nothing wrong with store-bought sparkling water, ingredient-wise. It’s a great option that provides consumers with healthy choices. The only downfall is the waste. Take it from someone who knows; seeing all those glass bottles can be a wake-up call.

Choosing to invest in a SodaStream with reusable bottles reduces your carbon footprint. This simple step makes the world a better place and helps us become good stewards of God’s beautiful world.

Saves Money

Nothing hits the spot like a bubbly glass of carbonated water. It’s why club soda is so popular when people are trying to give up regular sodas. Unfortunately, commercial sodas can make a massive dent in your budget. Making your own home-brewed soda can save you hundreds of dollars a year.

Plus, if you’re switching from sodas made with sugar syrups, you’ll surely save on the bills that come from poor eating habits. Win-win!

Benefits Your Health

The best thing about creating your own glass of soda is customizing each to fit your current health needs. For example, this recipe is anti-diabetic and can help you burn fat! It also gives your body a huge dose of aromatherapy, as citrus essential oils are always mood-boosting.

Where else can you find budget-friendly, sustainable health tonics? Once you get this Lemon-Lime Soda recipe down, you can mix and match essential oils to find your ultimate drink tailored to your personal taste.

Healthy Soda Ingredients 101

This refreshing drink calls for just eight natural ingredients. The best part is using the essential oils in many DIYs and aromatherapy rollers. EOs are so versatile!

Liquid Stevia: This low-glycemic sweetener is a must for making essential oil-infused drinks. We love using vanilla-flavored stevia instead of vanilla extract or coconut-flavored stevia, but you can switch it up. Liquid stevia is available in a variety of flavors.

Organic Lemon and Lime Juice: Fresh citrus juice makes this drink taste fresh. In this recipe, we use a bunch of lemon and lime juice to give our soda that traditional tropical taste, refreshing and energizing. You can also use grapefruit or orange—the options are endless!

Pro Tip: Work smarter, not harder. If you’re making many citrus-inspired recipes, squeeze the juice into a jar at the beginning of the week and store it in the fridge for easy prep!

Sparkling Water: The best thing about a SodaStream is its easy use. You fill your reusable bottle with water and let the machine do all the work! There are SodaStream soda maker machines that fit every budget and style. I have to replace our CO2 bottle once a month, as we drink carbonated water every day. I can’t believe how much we save!

Lemon Essential Oil: This bright EO is one of my favorites for culinary and cleaning purposes. It does everything from flavoring Lemon Tea Bread to removing sticky substances.

D-limonene, a compound found in citrus essential oils, has been proven to treat high triglyceride levels due to fatty liver disease. (2) It’s also anti-inflammatory, boosting your overall wellness. (3)

Lime Essential Oil: There are many benefits to this EO, but the one many people find most appealing is its ability to help burn fat. One study showed that participants who received coriander seed and lime essential oil capsules showed significant weight loss, even without any lifestyle changes. (1)

Imagine what will happen if you follow the EO Diet and try our Citrus Soda Pop!

Bergamot Essential Oil: One you might not think of right away, but can be a nice alternative, bergamot essential oil smells fantastic and is so uplifting. It turns out that there’s scientific evidence to confirm what many aromatherapists know to be true. Bergamot EO can help reduce cortisol levels and stress. (4)  Elevated cortisol can lead to excess weight gain, especially around the belly. (5)

You have a winning combination when you pair bergamot EO with fat-burning lime.

Consider other alternative essential oils, such as grapefruit, orange, or peppermint essential oils, depending on your preferences.

Safety Disclaimer: Oils and water (even sparkling water!) don’t mix. When you include an EO to a recipe, you always want to add a dispersant. In this recipe, liquid stevia ensures our essential oils distribute evenly and dilute properly.

Without a dispersant, your mouth will get irritated. Remember: You never want to ingest an essential oil neat!

This recipe is well within the max daily oral essential oil limits. As written, it’s closer to therapeutic dosage than culinary, which is great because we’re trying to prevent and treat liver damage!

I recommend that you sip on this drink rather than gulp it down.
