Detox Bath With Essential Oils: Easy DIY Recipe

Reading Time: 9 minutes
QUICK SUMMARY

A detox bath with essential oils combines Epsom salts, apple cider vinegar, lemon and lavender essential oils, and a carrier for a relaxing at-home soak. Follow the adult recipe below, and use the separate hand or foot soak recipes for children. Warm bathing and aromatherapy may support relaxation and sleep, but this bath has not been proven to remove toxins from the body. (6, 8)

Toxins are everywhere, and unless you live in a bubble, you can’t avoid them! God designed our bodies with systems that process and eliminate waste every day. This detox bath is one of my favorite ways to slow down, soothe a tired body, and make room for prayer and emotional renewal.

The adult and child versions are different. Follow the appropriate recipe card; children’s versions are hand and/or foot soaks, not full-body baths.

How Do I Take a Detox Bath?

The recipe card below gives the exact formula. Do not increase the essential oils simply because you want a stronger scent.

  • Mix essential oils and carrier oil (or liquid castile soap) before adding to the empty tub.
  • Pour in Epsom salts.
  • Fill your bathtub with as warm of water as you can stand.
  • Slowly pour the apple cider vinegar into the running water.
  • Soak your whole body for 30-45 minutes.
  • During the last five minutes, first, sit up, then kneel, and last stand.

Step One: Mix the Essential Oils and Carrier Oil

Mix the essential oils of choice and carrier oil before adding them to an empty tub. Remember, using the recipe’s carrier isn’t optional.

Essential oils do not dissolve in water, so use the recipe’s carrier rather than adding undiluted drops directly to the tub.

For emotional detox, this is a beautiful time to set an intention before the tub fills. You can pray, breathe deeply, or simply say, “Lord, help me release what I was never meant to carry.”

Step Two: Draw Your Bath

Pour in your Epsom salts. Then fill your bathtub with comfortably warm water. Last, slowly pour the apple cider vinegar into the running water. Follow the soak time in the recipe card. During the last few minutes, slowly sit up, kneel, and finally stand. Exiting the tub slowly helps reduce the chance of getting lightheaded.

Keep the water comfortably warm, not hot. Sweating does not establish that a bath removes a clinically meaningful amount of toxins. (11)

The better-established benefit is relaxation and sleep support. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that warm baths or showers before bed were associated with better self-rated sleep quality and sleep efficiency, and bathing 1-2 hours before bedtime helped shorten the time it took to fall asleep. (8)

If you feel dizzy, nauseated, weak, overheated, or unwell, end the bath early and cool down gradually.

The 5 Ingredients You Need for a Detox Bath

You need just five ingredients, and you may already have several at home.

Pure, Fragrance-Free Epsom Salts: Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium supports normal nerve and muscle function, but meaningful absorption through bathwater has not been established. We love Epsom salts as a traditional part of a soothing soak. (1, 2, 3) Learn the signs of magnesium deficiency here.

Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar: Choose apple cider vinegar with the “mother.” Laboratory studies show antimicrobial activity, but that does not mean this diluted bath treats skin infections. (4)

Liquid Carrier Oil: Sweet almond, fractionated coconut, avocado, grapeseed, and jojoba oil are heavenly in this recipe! Use a liquid carrier oil rather than regular coconut oil, which can harden in pipes. The carrier oil dilutes essential oils but does not make them water-soluble; organic, unscented liquid castile soap is another option specified in the recipe.

Lemon Essential Oil: Its clean, uplifting aroma makes it one of our favorite EOs for detox. One human study found reduced test-anxiety scores with lemon-oil inhalation; this does not prove toxin removal. (5) Cold-expressed lemon oil can be phototoxic at sufficient topical concentrations, so do not increase the recipe’s drops. (10)

Lavender Essential Oil: Lavender brings a calming floral aroma. Human reviews suggest inhaled lavender may help with anxiety and sleep, though study quality varies. (6, 7)

Supplies: Use a glass jar to mix the ingredients and a foot bath or bucket for the child-friendly versions.

How to Give a Child a Detox Bath

Children can enjoy a gentler, supervised hand or foot soak. These are for comfort, not treatment of illness.

Here’s how you adjust this recipe for little ones.

Keep the water comfortably warm, supervise closely, and never substitute the adult full-body recipe.

For very young children, babies, sensitive skin, asthma, allergies, or a history of reactions to essential oils, go slowly. Use the child-specific recipe exactly, and stop immediately if irritation, coughing, wheezing, unusual sleepiness, or another concerning reaction occurs. A detox soak is not appropriate care for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, severe hives, or another serious allergic reaction.

The Importance of Detoxing Your Emotions

Emotional detox isn’t widely spoken about, though it should be! God created us with emotions, and they are not bad. But stress, grief, anger, and fear can leave us feeling overwhelmed, affect our sleep, and distract us from what matters most.

When I talk about emotional detox, I’m not saying emotions are toxins. I mean taking time to process what you’re carrying instead of letting it run unchecked. A quiet bath gives you space to breathe, pray, and ask God for wisdom and peace.

A detox bath supports a relaxing lifestyle; it is not a medical detox treatment. Your liver and kidneys do the primary work of processing and eliminating waste. I have used this bath during pregnancy, keeping the water comfortably warm rather than hot and avoiding overheating. Follow your maternity care team’s advice when needed.

How to End Your Bathtime Routine

My bathtime routine is pretty extensive, so I consider myself an expert in pampering! Once you finish your relaxing bath, use my coconut oil-based moisturizing oil base. If you’ve experienced emotional detox, this will only boost your results. Add essential oils to your moisturizer to make it even more fabulous with my joyful recipe.

If you’re using your DIY detox bath after a long day or tired muscles, I recommend following up with my DIY Fibromyalgia Massage Oil Blend.

If your skin has had too much sun, remember to cool down first and protect damaged skin from further irritation. For everyday skin support, you can also explore my soothing skin healing serum. Avoid putting essential oils, vinegar, or other potentially irritating ingredients directly on blistered or badly burned skin.

For the best results, don’t jump right back into the noise of the day. Drink a glass of filtered water, put on comfortable clothes, diffuse a calming essential oil, and give yourself a few minutes to breathe. If you’re taking this bath at night, dim the lights and avoid screens afterward so your body can keep moving toward rest.

Application: After your bath, write down one thing you’re releasing and one truth you’re choosing to hold onto. Emotional detox is not just about letting stress go; it’s also about filling your heart with what is true, pure, lovely, and life-giving.

How a Detox Bath Supports the Body

The strongest evidence for this routine concerns relaxation, aromatherapy, and warm-water bathing. Studies suggest lavender inhalation may ease anxiety and warm bathing before bed may improve sleep. (6, 7, 8) Evidence from saunas or controlled heat therapy should not be treated as proof that this bath eliminates toxins. (9, 11)

For our family, the value is physical comfort, emotional renewal, and a repeatable moment to slow down and pray. That is wise stewardship of the body God gave us.

How Often Should You Take a Detox Bath?

For relaxation, once a week can be a beautiful rhythm. Some adults enjoy a soak two or three times weekly when their skin and health tolerate it, but there is no proven detox schedule. Shorten the soak or stop if you feel dry, irritated, overheated, or lightheaded. An evening bath one to two hours before bed may be especially relaxing. (8)

Detox Bath Safety Tips

Use the recipe’s carrier. Essential oils do not dissolve in bathwater. Mixing them into a carrier oil dilutes them but does not guarantee even dispersion; stop if you feel stinging or irritation. The oil may also make the tub slippery.

Avoid overheating. Keep the water warm, stand up slowly, and drink water afterward. Use particular caution during pregnancy, with low blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, impaired heat sensation, or a tendency to faint.

Protect sensitive skin. Avoid this blend on open wounds, severe dermatitis, or blistered sunburn. Cold-expressed lemon oil can increase sun sensitivity at certain concentrations. (10)

Follow the child-specific recipes. Supervise children, and do not use an adult full-body bath recipe for them. Stop immediately if a child develops irritation, coughing, wheezing, or another concerning reaction.

Detox Bath FAQs

Do detox baths really remove toxins?

No home bath has been proven to remove a predictable, clinically meaningful toxic body burden. We use this recipe for relaxation and emotional renewal, alongside the body’s normal detoxification processes.

Does Epsom salt absorb through the skin?

Meaningful magnesium absorption from Epsom salt baths has not been established. (3)

Can I put essential oils directly in bathwater?

No. Water does not dilute essential oils. Follow the recipe’s carrier instructions and avoid adding extra drops.

Can I take a detox bath before bed?

Yes. Research suggests warm bathing one to two hours before bedtime can improve sleep quality. (8)

Can children use this detox bath?

Use the child-specific hand or foot soak cards, never the adult full-body formula. Supervise closely and stop if irritation develops.
