When it comes to taking care of your health and well-being, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Infrared sauna blankets have become popular because they make heat therapy convenient at home, and research into sauna and passive heat therapy continues to grow.

The basic idea of using heat for wellness is not novel at all. People have been using sauna and heat therapies for centuries. What is newer is the growing body of research helping us understand how heat affects circulation, recovery, relaxation, and other aspects of general wellness, and how different sauna technologies compare.

The key is to match the claim to the research. A study on a Finnish sauna, an infrared cabin, whole-body hyperthermia, or a red-light device does not automatically prove the same result for a consumer sauna blanket. With that distinction in mind, let's look at what the evidence actually says and how we use this technology in our family.

What is an Infrared Sauna Blanket?

An infrared sauna is a type of dry heat therapy that does not use water or add humidity. Instead, it uses infrared energy, which sits just beyond visible red light on the electromagnetic spectrum, to produce heat. Unlike a traditional sauna that primarily heats the air around you, a far-infrared sauna transfers radiant heat toward the body. (1, 2)

This is why infrared saunas can feel more comfortable at lower room temperatures. Traditional Finnish saunas commonly operate around 70-100°C, or about 158-212°F, while far-infrared saunas often operate closer to 45-60°C, or about 113-140°F. (1, 3)

A 2025 human study directly compared hot-water immersion, traditional sauna, and far-infrared sauna in 20 healthy adults. Far-infrared sauna still increased cardiac output and produced sweating, but at the lower temperatures tested it produced much less core-temperature rise than traditional sauna or hot-water immersion. A 2026 study confirmed that when far-infrared sauna temperature is pushed much higher, to 65°C or 149°F for 45 minutes, the heat strain rises substantially. In other words, temperature and session length matter. (3, 4)

That distinction is especially important for families.

In our family, children have used infrared sauna therapy with a deliberately low-heat approach after discussing it with their pediatrician. We are not talking about putting a child into a 158-200°F traditional sauna and treating him or her like an adult. We keep the temperature around 110-120°F at the most for children, use shorter sessions, supervise the entire time, and make hydration a priority.

Research specifically on infrared sauna blankets in children is limited, so this family practice should not be read as a universal statement that sauna blankets are appropriate for every child. Older pediatric sauna research was conducted under conditions designed to resemble a traditional Finnish sauna and found that heat exposure placed greater demands on children's cardiovascular regulation, especially in younger children. That is one reason pediatric guidance, lower temperatures, shorter exposure, supervision, and hydration matter. (5)

The benefits below are supported to different degrees by research on far-infrared sauna, whole-body hyperthermia, or passive heat therapy. Because blanket-specific clinical trials are still limited, I will point out where the evidence comes from so we do not blur one therapy into another.

1. SUPPORT HEALTHY-LOOKING SKIN

Regular infrared exposure may support healthier-looking skin, but there is an important distinction to make here.

Clinical research has found that repeated infrared irradiation can stimulate collagen and elastin in human skin and improve the appearance of wrinkles and skin laxity over time. One study found increases in collagen and elastin that persisted 30-90 days after treatment. (6)

That is encouraging, but this research used targeted infrared irradiation rather than an infrared sauna blanket. So we should not pretend the treatment is identical.

What an infrared sauna blanket clearly does provide is warmth, sweating, and increased skin blood flow. That combination can leave skin looking flushed, fresh, and glowing after a session. Just remember that healthy skin still starts with hydration, good nutrition, restorative sleep, and a clean skincare routine.

2. SUPPORT HEALTHY CIRCULATION

The heat from an infrared sauna causes blood vessels near the skin to dilate and increases blood flow. Heart rate and cardiac output can rise as the body works to move heat toward the skin and cool itself. (2, 3)

This is one of the most consistent short-term effects of sauna and passive heat therapy.

A 2025 comparison study found that far-infrared sauna increased cardiac output in healthy adults, although the response was smaller than hot-water immersion and somewhat lower than traditional sauna. That is still meaningful because it confirms that far-infrared heat produces a real cardiovascular response rather than simply making you feel warm. (3)

Repeated passive heat therapy has also been studied for vascular function and blood pressure. A 2025 systematic review of randomized trials found that the overall cardiometabolic evidence is mixed, with a possible reduction in systolic blood pressure in some groups but substantial variation among studies. So think of sauna as a supportive wellness tool, not a replacement for movement, sleep, nutrition, or needed cardiovascular care. (7)

3. SOOTHE TIRED MUSCLES AND SUPPORT COMFORTABLE MOVEMENT

Gentle heat can help tired muscles relax, which is one reason people have used heat after activity for generations.

A systematic review of infrared therapies reported pain-related improvements across several musculoskeletal conditions, although the devices, wavelengths, treatment settings, and protocols varied. A randomized controlled trial in people with fibromyalgia also found pain reductions after mild water-filtered infrared-A whole-body hyperthermia. (8, 9)

Those studies are useful for understanding what carefully delivered infrared heat may do, but they did not test the HigherDOSE sauna blanket and should not be used to claim that a consumer blanket treats arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, or another medical condition.

For home wellness use, the practical takeaway is simpler: warmth can feel soothing after activity and may support comfortable movement and recovery. Persistent, severe, unexplained, or worsening pain still deserves appropriate evaluation.

4. SUPPORT HEAT ADAPTATION AND ANTIOXIDANT DEFENSES

Oxidative stress describes an imbalance between reactive molecules and the body's antioxidant defenses. Exercise, illness, environmental exposures, poor diet, and normal metabolism can all influence that balance.

A 2024 review of passive heat therapies describes heat-acclimation pathways that may support antioxidant defenses, and earlier human research using repeated far-infrared sauna therapy reported a reduction in one urinary marker of oxidative stress after two weeks. (10, 11)

These findings support continued research on heat adaptation, but they do not establish that a consumer sauna blanket prevents disease, removes a specific toxin, or corrects oxidative stress in every user.

Far-infrared sauna heat is also not the same thing as red or near-infrared photobiomodulation. Red and near-infrared light therapy has the stronger evidence for directly influencing mitochondrial signaling and ATP-related pathways. Far-infrared sauna blankets primarily work through radiant heat and the body's physiological response to that heat. Evidence for one technology should not be used as proof for the other. (12)

5. SUPPORT RELAXATION AND A HEALTHY MOOD

Heat can be deeply relaxing, and researchers are interested in how changes in body temperature, stress physiology, and immune signaling may relate to mood.

One randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial studied a medically supervised whole-body hyperthermia protocol in 34 adults with major depressive disorder. The active treatment produced greater reductions in depression scores than sham treatment, with differences persisting during follow-up. A later analysis explored immune signaling associated with that response. (13, 14)

This is interesting clinical research, but it does not establish that the HigherDOSE sauna blanket or ordinary home sauna use treats depression. The study used a controlled therapeutic hyperthermia protocol, not a consumer sauna blanket.

For a wellness article like this one, the appropriate takeaway is that warmth and a quiet sauna routine may support relaxation and a healthy mood. Anyone dealing with depression or another mental-health condition should use appropriate professional care rather than substituting a home sauna device for treatment.

6. SUPPORT SLEEP QUALITY

There is something deeply relaxing about warming up, slowing down, and letting your body cool naturally afterward. Many sauna users say they sleep better after a session, and observational research has found an association between sauna use and better self-reported sleep.

A 2024 population study from northern Sweden surveyed 971 adults about sauna habits. Regular sauna bathers reported more satisfying sleep patterns, better general and mental health, more energy, and less self-reported pain than non-sauna bathers. Because this was an observational study, it cannot prove sauna caused those differences, but it adds useful real-world evidence to what many people already experience. (15)

For evening sauna use, give yourself time to cool down, rehydrate, and settle before bed. If a late session leaves you feeling wired instead of sleepy, move it earlier in the day.

7. SUPPORT EXERCISE RECOVERY

Infrared sauna research has some of its most practical human evidence in the exercise-recovery setting, although those studies used sauna protocols rather than the HigherDOSE blanket specifically.

A randomized crossover study in 16 male basketball players found that a 20-minute infrared sauna session at approximately 43°C after resistance exercise reduced subjective muscle soreness and helped preserve countermovement-jump performance the next day compared with passive recovery. (16)

A 2025 study then looked at repeated post-exercise infrared sauna use over a six-week training period, adding newer evidence that regular use may support aspects of neuromuscular performance and training adaptation. (17)

One correction to the old explanation is important: post-workout soreness is not caused by lactic acid sitting in the muscles. Lactate is cleared relatively quickly after exercise. Delayed-onset muscle soreness is more closely related to microscopic muscle damage, inflammatory signaling, and the repair process after unfamiliar or strenuous exercise.

So the recovery benefit is better explained by heat, blood flow, relaxation, and the body's adaptive response, not by “sweating out lactic acid.”

8. PROMOTE DEEP RELAXATION

Sometimes the benefit you notice first is the simplest one: you feel relaxed.

The warmth of an infrared sauna can encourage you to stop moving, put your phone down, breathe, pray, watch a movie with the family, or simply be still for a while. That matters in a world where most of us spend far too much time in a state of constant stimulation.

The 2024 Swedish sauna study found that sauna users reported greater happiness, energy, sleep satisfaction, and mental well-being. Again, that does not prove cause and effect, but it fits what sauna users commonly report. (15)

Here is the bigger picture: heat therapy should support your healthy lifestyle, not become another wellness obsession. Use it as one more tool alongside nourishing food, movement, hydration, sleep, prayer, time outdoors, and the other habits that help your body do what God designed it to do.

How to Use an Infrared Sauna Blanket Safely

Infrared sauna blankets can create a significant heat load, especially as temperature and session time rise. Start lower and shorter, then adjust based on how your body responds.

For the HigherDOSE blanket specifically, follow the manufacturer's current directions. As of August 2026, HigherDOSE says to cover the skin with long sleeves, pants, and socks or use its blanket insert, start with 1-2 sessions per week, and stay hydrated before and after use. (19)

For adults:

  • Start low and short. If you are new to sauna blankets, begin with a lower heat setting and a shorter session rather than jumping straight to the maximum.
  • Hydrate before and after. Sweating means fluid loss. Water and minerals matter, especially after exercise.
  • Protect your skin. Follow the product instructions for clothing, an insert, or another protective barrier so bare skin is not pressed directly against a hot surface.
  • Do not use alcohol before or during a session. Alcohol can impair judgment and increase dehydration and heat-related risk.
  • Stop if you feel unwell. Dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness, unusual heart pounding, confusion, or feeling excessively hot are signals to get out and cool down.
  • Do not use a sauna to push through a fever or acute illness. Your body is already managing heat stress.
  • Ask your healthcare provider first when appropriate. This is especially important during pregnancy or when you have cardiovascular disease, blood-pressure problems, kidney disease, impaired sweating, a history of fainting, or medications that affect hydration, blood pressure, or temperature regulation.

Can Kids Use an Infrared Sauna Blanket?

Research specifically evaluating infrared sauna blankets in children is limited, so we do not make a universal safety claim for every child. In our family, we have used a cautious low-heat approach after consulting our pediatrician first.

Our family approach is intentionally different from an adult high-heat sauna session:

  • Consult your pediatrician first. This is especially important for younger children or children with any medical condition.
  • Keep the temperature low. We stay around 110-120°F, or about 43-49°C, at the most for children.
  • Keep sessions shorter than adult sessions. Use the pediatrician-approved duration for your child and stop well before the session becomes uncomfortable.
  • Supervise the entire time. Never leave a child alone in a sauna blanket.
  • Hydrate before and after. Children can become dehydrated more quickly than adults.
  • Stop immediately if your child is uncomfortable. Headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual tiredness, flushed distress, rapid heartbeat, confusion, or simply saying “I'm too hot” means the session is over.

The older pediatric sauna research often cited in safety discussions used conditions meant to resemble a traditional Finnish sauna, which operates at far higher temperatures than the 110-120°F low-heat range we are talking about here. That study still teaches us something valuable: children's cardiovascular and temperature-regulation responses are not identical to adults, so a child should never be treated like a miniature adult when it comes to heat exposure. What are the main infrared sauna blanket benefits?

The most defensible wellness benefits are the immediate effects of heat, such as increased skin blood flow and sweating, along with muscle relaxation and a calming heat experience. Infrared sauna studies also suggest potential exercise-recovery and sleep-related benefits. However, blanket-specific clinical research remains limited, so research on other sauna or hyperthermia methods should not be presented as proof that a particular blanket treats a medical condition. How hot should an infrared sauna blanket be?

There is no single perfect temperature for everyone. Far-infrared sauna research uses different temperatures and protocols, and higher heat produces greater physiological strain. Follow the instructions for your specific product and start lower when you are new to heat therapy. Is an infrared sauna blanket the same as red light therapy?

No. Far-infrared sauna blankets primarily provide heat. Does an infrared sauna blanket detox your body?

We use “detox” carefully.
