Showers are an area of the home that can go downhill fast! Soap scum, grout stains, and water spots can leave you feeling like you’re dirtier when you get out of the shower than before you got in! Dirt has to go, but no one wants to or should use harsh chemicals to get that sparkle back. 3 Toxins in Shower Cleaners
It would take all day to share every toxin in store-bought shower cleaners, but I wanted to highlight three of the top offenders. Caution: The information below will blow your mind!
Triclosan
Triclosan is a major endocrine disrupter that affects the thyroid and reproductive organs and interferes with estrogen production. (1) Companies add this chemical because it’s antibacterial and can kill harmful germs. However, studies have shown that using triclosan and other harsh antibacterial agents gives consumers more of a placebo effect if anything. (2) You can get the job done without using harsh chemicals!
Synthetic Fragrance
Synthetic fragrances are a general label that can contain any combination of 4000 toxins. These fragrances have been linked to migraines, contact dermatitis, and more. Unfortunately, you’re not likely to find what toxic fragrance ingredients are in your shower cleaner because of the FDA’s Fair Packaging and Labeling Act. (3)
Bathrooms are generally very tight, enclosed spaces, so the fumes have nowhere to go except into your system. Essential oils can create a lovely fragrance in any product, and they are toxin-free!
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
This chemical gives products volume and can also create suds. But, contrary to popular belief, more suds does not mean the product is superior!
Even if you use gloves while cleaning, SLS can give lousy skin reactions, ranging from a minor rash to severe eczema. It can also cause harm to the eyes. In fact, SLS is used to induce eye discomfort in eyedrop tests! (4)
Our Favorite Ingredients
As you read above, most shower cleaners are packed full of disgusting chemicals that get the shower clean but wreak havoc on your body. Unfortunately, this is an issue that affects anyone who uses the bathroom! These chemicals can be absorbed into your skin and inhaled long after you’ve finished cleaning.
The ingredients in my shower cleaner are safe and all-natural. They’re safe for the environment and can even be used with rural septic systems. Bonus: I don’t choke when I’m cleaning!
With a DIY like this, you’re worry-free! Many shower cleaners use fundamental ingredients, but my version includes many unique elements to make it outstanding.
I’m sure many oxy cleaners are out there, but I’m partial to the OxyBoost Brightener and Enzyme Stain Remover from TrulyFree. This fantastic company works hard to provide us with natural, safe products. Dr. Z and I love them so much that we’ve partnered with them to give you a fantastic welcome offer. Check them out here!
Of course, any great DIY includes essential oils, so we’ve chosen lemon for this recipe. Lemon essential oil is a fantastic deodorizer, and it can help remove stains and brighten surfaces. Plus, it has an uplifting smell that is sure to boost your mood! If you’d like, you can also use a few drops of tea tree essential oil. This EO is a beautiful addition that can help fight mold.
