Smoothie Bowl Ingredients 101
This smoothie bowl uses fun ingredients to create one energizing breakfast or snack. Here’s why we chose each element.
Frozen Acai Berries: Acai berries are all the rage and for a good reason! These berries are Amazonian superfruits. They contain more antioxidants than any other berry (1). It’s important to include antioxidants in your diet because they fight free radicals.
Free radicals can wreak havoc on your body and cause many diseases (2). While you can’t totally eliminate these pests, you can fight against them.
Frozen Banana: Bananas are an inexpensive, filling ingredient. We love keeping a bunch on hand to feed growing little ones! They’re fantastic for your gut health as the fiber in them is considered prebiotic (3).
Mama Z Pro Tip: Use super ripe bananas (mushy and brown!) for best results. I like keeping a bag in my freezer for quick meal prep. To flash-freeze your bananas, peel them and lay them on a cookie sheet. Freeze until solid. Remove from the pan and store in a plastic baggie.
Avocado: This ingredient creates one creamy smoothie bowl. Adding ½ an avocado to your smoothie is enough to tide you over until lunch! Avocados have many health benefits, are full of omega-3s, and consuming them can help you maintain a healthy weight (4). We associate avocados with Tex-Mex inspired foods in America, but they’re a common addition to sweets in other countries! They add such decadence to any dessert.
Super Greens Powder: This amazing super greens powder contains cancer-fighting ingredients and tastes incredible. A few stand-out elements include:
- Chlorella powder– A detoxing agent that binds to heavy metals (5)
- Ginkgo leaf powder– Can improve mental health and promote feelings of calmness (6)
- Guarana powder- Great for boosting cognitive function and giving a boost of energy (7)
Raw Cacao Powder: Have you ever experienced the euphoria that comes with eating a piece of chocolate? It won’t surprise you to learn that cacao is an instant mood booster (8)! Cacao powder is different than cocoa powder as it contains higher levels of the cacao bean and is less processed. Swapping cocoa powder for cacao is a simple swap that can make a world of difference!
Matcha Green Tea Powder: If you’re trying to kick the coffee habit, try a cup of matcha! This gorgeous green tea contains potent catechins, which many believe fight cancer (9).
The more pure your matcha is, the more health benefits there are! We love matcha tea and regularly use it in our morning lattes.
Kale: Kale is part of the cruciferous vegetable group. These veggies are better for your health than many others! The same phytonutrient that makes them taste bitter also makes them powerful (10). Kale is an easy addition to this smoothie bowl as it blends in perfectly. No one will know they’re consuming greens!
Spinach: Spinach contains not just one but two compounds that can slow the growth of cancer (11). It also includes a lot of iron. I love including spinach in smoothies because it adds a deep earthy flavor. Fresh spinach tastes best, in my opinion, but you can always use frozen if in a pinch.
Almond or Coconut Milk Beverage: To keep this recipe dairy-free, we use almond or coconut milk. Both of these options create a silky smoothie bowl, and you’re avoiding the hormones that leech into regular dairy. When purchasing this ingredient, be sure to grab the unsweetened variety. You wouldn’t believe the sugar content in the “regular” variation.
Toppings: This is the fun part! Toppings make this smoothie bowl as pretty as it is delicious. Aside from bananas, we recommend using chia seeds, coconut flakes, hempseeds, mandarins, or orange sections, and strawberries.
- Hempseeds are an excellent source of protein and fiber. They contain phytocannabinoids that can help protect the brain (12).
- Chia seeds are unique in that they start small and expand in liquid. This means consuming them can help you feel fuller for more extended periods.
Use any combination of these toppings for a fun breakfast or snack.
