QUICK SUMMARY

My request is that you approach this subject with an open Bible, an open mind, and an honest respect for the research. We should not exaggerate what cannabis can do, but neither should we ignore evidence simply because the plant has been abused recreationally.
God created plants with extraordinary chemical complexity. Faithful stewardship requires us to examine how a substance is prepared, why it is used, what effects it produces, and whether its use reflects wisdom and self-control.

What Is Hemp?
Under the longstanding United States federal definition, hemp is Cannabis sativa and its derivatives containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. (1)
Hemp may be cultivated for:
- Fiber
- Seed
- Food oil
- Construction materials
- Animal bedding
- CBD-rich floral extracts
Hemp is not necessarily “bred without THC.” It can contain THC, but legally compliant plant material must remain within the applicable threshold.
The plant may also produce cannabinoid precursors or hemp-derived intoxicating compounds. This is one reason a package labeled “hemp-derived” is not automatically nonintoxicating.
What Is Marijuana?
“Marijuana” is commonly used for cannabis plant material or products containing substantial amounts of THC.

These products can look similar while containing entirely different substances.
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is pressed from hemp seeds.
It is a food oil that provides:
- Linoleic acid
- Alpha-linolenic acid
- Gamma-linolenic acid in smaller amounts

- Other fatty acids and plant nutrients
Hemp seed oil naturally contains little to no meaningful CBD or THC because cannabinoids are concentrated primarily in the resin-producing flowers and leaves.

Cannabis Essential Oil

Look for a Batch-Specific Certificate of Analysis
A credible certificate of analysis should identify:
- The product and batch number
- CBD concentration
- THC concentration
- Other significant cannabinoids
- Pesticide testing
- Heavy-metal testing
- Residual-solvent testing
- Microbial and mold testing
- The independent laboratory
Confirm that the report applies to the exact batch in your hand rather than a generic sample.
Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, or Isolate?
Full-spectrum products may offer a broader chemical profile but can expose the user to THC.
Broad-spectrum products may reduce THC exposure, but “THC-free” claims still require verification.
CBD isolate offers a more predictable single-compound product but does not eliminate medication interactions or liver concerns.
Federal and State Law
Hemp was removed from the federal Controlled Substances Act definition of marijuana under the 2018 Farm Bill when it met the federal THC threshold. (1)

This regulatory distinction does not mean CBD has no biological effects. It means commercial products have not demonstrated the standardized quality, safety, and effectiveness required for drug approval.
Drug Testing
A CBD product can lead to a positive THC drug test when:
- It is full spectrum.
- It contains more THC than stated.
- It is used frequently.
- The testing threshold is low.
Anyone subject to workplace, athletic, military, legal, or medical drug testing should consider avoiding cannabinoid products unless the relevant authority provides clear guidance.
A Biblical Perspective on CBD and Cannabis
The Bible does not directly mention CBD oil, cannabis tinctures, marijuana edibles, or modern cannabinoid medicine.
We therefore have to apply biblical principles rather than pretending Scripture names every modern product.
Medicine and Intoxication Are Not Identical
The Bible recognizes medicinal use of substances that can also be abused.
Proverbs 31:6 says:
“Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress.”
This verse does not endorse habitual drunkenness. It recognizes that context and purpose matter.
A medication used carefully to control seizures, relieve chemotherapy-induced vomiting, support palliative care, or manage severe pain is morally different from using a substance primarily to escape reality or pursue intoxication.
The Call to Sobriety
Scripture repeatedly calls believers to sobriety and watchfulness:
“Be sober-minded; be watchful.” — 1 Peter 5:8
And:
“Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18
The substance named in these passages is alcohol, but the underlying principle extends to any pattern of avoidable intoxication that:
- Controls us
- Clouds judgment
- Weakens self-control
- Harms relationships
- Interferes with worship or responsibility
Does Medical THC Always Equal Drunkenness?
Not necessarily.
Many accepted medicines affect alertness, perception, or coordination, including:
- Opioids
- Anesthesia
- Anti-seizure medications
- Sedatives
- Muscle relaxants
- Certain antihistamines
A medically necessary side effect is not automatically the same as pursuing intoxication for pleasure.
The more important questions are:
- Why am I using it?
- Am I using the minimum amount needed?
- Is there a safer effective option?
- Am I remaining under wise care?
- Am I becoming dependent?

Self-Control and Enslavement
Paul writes:

- Can I stop?
- Am I hiding my use?
- Do I keep increasing the dose?

- Has it become more important than my family, work, worship, or health?
A product may begin as medicine and become a master if we stop exercising discernment.
Stewardship of the Body
First Corinthians 6:19–20 reminds believers that the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Stewardship does not mean refusing every medication. It means making thoughtful decisions about:
- Benefit
- Risk
- Purity
- Dose
- Interactions
- Dependence
- Long-term consequences
Using an untested concentrate with unknown THC, pesticides, or residual solvents is not wise stewardship merely because the plant is natural.
Obeying the Law
Romans 13 teaches respect for governing authorities.
Christians should consider:
- Federal law
- State law
- Employment policies
- Driving laws
- Travel restrictions
- Medical-cannabis requirements
Civil disobedience is a serious theological issue and should not be reduced to personal convenience or the assumption that every cannabis law is irrelevant.

Christian liberty is never permission to act without love.
A Practical Biblical Framework
Before using CBD or cannabis medicinally, consider:
- Purpose: Am I treating a real condition or primarily seeking escape?
- Evidence: Is there meaningful research for my intended use?
- Product: Do I know the actual CBD, THC, and contaminant levels?
- Guidance: Have I discussed interactions with a qualified professional?
- Sobriety: Will this impair my judgment or responsibilities?
- Law: Is the product lawful where I live and travel?
- Dependence: Is use becoming compulsive or escalating?
- Witness: How will this affect my family and community?
- Prayer: Have I honestly brought the decision before God?
Should Christians Use CBD?
A nonintoxicating, accurately labeled CBD product used for a legitimate purpose is not morally equivalent to recreational drunkenness.
Still, Christians should not assume every CBD product is:
- THC-free
- Effective
- Safe
- Legal
- Free from dependency or avoidance patterns
The decision should be made with prayer, wisdom, accurate information, and attention to conscience.
Should Christians Use Medical Cannabis?
Medical cannabis containing THC requires greater caution because impairment is possible.
There may be situations—such as chemotherapy-induced vomiting, severe pain, palliative care, or debilitating neurological symptoms—in which a carefully supervised THC-containing medicine is reasonable.
The goal should be therapeutic benefit, not the pursuit of a high.

What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a nonintoxicating cannabinoid found in cannabis. It has biological effects and medication interactions even though it does not ordinarily produce a THC-like high.
What is THC?
THC is the primary intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis. It activates CB1 receptors and can alter perception, memory, coordination, appetite, and mood.
What is the difference between hemp and marijuana?
Under the longstanding federal definition, hemp contains no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight. Marijuana generally refers to cannabis containing more substantial THC.
Is hemp seed oil the same as CBD oil?
No. Hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds and contains little to no CBD. CBD oil is generally made with an extract from hemp flowers or leaves mixed into a carrier oil.
Is CBD oil an essential oil?
No. Most CBD oil is a cannabinoid extract mixed with a carrier oil. Steam-distilled cannabis essential oil contains aromatic terpenes but little meaningful CBD or THC.
Can CBD get you high?
Purified CBD does not ordinarily produce a high. However, full-spectrum or mislabeled CBD products may contain THC, and some products marketed as hemp contain intoxicating cannabinoids.
Does CBD block THC?
Not reliably. CBD may modify certain THC effects, but in some oral combinations it can increase THC exposure by slowing its metabolism.

CBD has killed certain cancer cells and triggered anticancer mechanisms in laboratory and animal studies. That does not yet prove that retail CBD oil can cure cancer in humans.
Can THC kill cancer cells?

Can cannabis oil cure cancer?

Final Thoughts on CBD, Cannabis Oil, and Christian Use
The cannabis conversation is not served by hype, fear, or careless claims.
Cannabis is neither a miracle plant that cures everything nor a substance without legitimate medical value.
CBD has a proven role in specific prescription seizure treatments. THC-related medicines can help selected patients with chemotherapy-induced nausea. Cannabis products may provide modest relief for some forms of chronic pain or multiple-sclerosis spasticity.
Cannabinoids have also demonstrated direct cancer-fighting effects in laboratory and animal studies. They have killed cancer cells, triggered apoptosis, and inhibited tumor-related pathways.
This research deserves serious attention.
At the same time, laboratory findings do not justify telling cancer patients that a homemade oil will cure them. Product quality varies, interactions are real, THC can impair judgment, CBD can affect the liver, and unregulated extracts may contain undisclosed cannabinoids or contaminants.
For Christians, the deepest question is not simply, “Is cannabis good or bad?”
Ask:
- What am I using?
- Why am I using it?
- What does the evidence show?
- Will it impair or enslave me?
- Is it legal?
- Could it harm someone else?
- Am I acting in faith, wisdom, and self-control?
Medicine and intoxication are not always the same, but medical language should never become an excuse for recreational excess.
We are called to be sober-minded, watchful, and good stewards of our bodies. That means neither condemning every plant-derived medicine nor accepting every healing promise on the internet.
Pray. Research. Seek wise counsel. Examine the product. Consider your medical history and medications. Tell the truth about both the benefits and the risks.
Then make the decision with a clear conscience before God.
