1. Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Risk Factors
Clinical research suggests that Nigella sativa supplementation may produce modest improvements in blood pressure and several other cardiovascular risk markers.
A comprehensive 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated 82 studies involving 5,026 participants. Across the included trials, Nigella sativa supplementation was associated with improvements in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, several cholesterol measures, triglycerides, inflammatory markers, weight measurements, and other cardiometabolic outcomes. The studies used a wide range of preparations, amounts, and treatment periods, so these findings apply to Nigella sativa supplementation broadly rather than proving that every black seed oil product will produce the same result. An earlier meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials involving 860 people found average reductions of about 3.3 mmHg in systolic pressure and 2.8 mmHg in diastolic pressure compared with control groups. Again, this research evaluated different Nigella sativa preparations rather than one standardized bottle of black seed oil.
This makes black seed a possible adjunct for metabolic wellness, but it does not replace nourishing meals, movement, sleep, glucose monitoring, or appropriate treatment for diabetes.

4. Asthma and Respiratory Support

Do not put black seed oil or essential oils into a nebulizer, CPAP machine, humidifier, or other respiratory medical device unless that specific device and protocol are designed for it.

This is an area where we need to clearly distinguish exciting laboratory research from proven human treatment.
A 2025 review of thymoquinone and cancer research concluded that the lack of human studies remains a major gap. Researchers continue to investigate thymoquinone as a potential complement to existing cancer therapies, but clinical effectiveness, dosing, interactions, delivery, and long-term safety have not been established. In other words, preclinical cancer research is compelling enough to keep studying, but it does not establish black seed oil as a cancer treatment.
People undergoing cancer treatment should discuss concentrated supplements with their oncology team because natural compounds can affect drug metabolism, blood sugar, blood pressure, bleeding, and treatment tolerance.
7. Endothelial Function

Human trials showing changes in blood pressure, glucose, lipids, and inflammatory markers add to the cardiovascular picture, but black seed oil itself has not been established as a treatment for endothelial dysfunction.
This is one reason I like black seed oil as part of a broader heart-health strategy, but it belongs beside the fundamentals, not in place of them.
Walking, resistance exercise, healthy blood pressure, healthy blood sugar, restorative sleep, tobacco avoidance, prayerful stress management, and a whole-food eating pattern remain foundational.
8. Supporting Healthy Weight-Loss Efforts
Black seed is also being studied for weight-management support.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 placebo-controlled clinical trials found that Nigella sativa supplementation produced moderate reductions in body weight, BMI, and waist circumference. The researchers cautioned that the body-weight studies were heterogeneous and that more high-quality trials were needed. (14)
One particularly useful randomized trial followed 90 women with obesity between the ages of 25 and 50. Both groups followed a calorie-restricted diet, but one group also received 3 grams of black seed oil daily for eight weeks.
