In my opinion, the basil plant is a must-have in the herb garden.

But what is basil doing when you add it to your favorite recipe? There could be a lot more going on than you realized.

Even as a fresh-cut or dried powdered herb, sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) has been studied for gastroprotective effects. A 1999 animal study found that the fixed oil of Ocimum basilicum protected the stomach against ulcers triggered by aspirin, indomethacin, alcohol, histamine, reserpine, serotonin, and stress. That study evaluated fixed oil, not essential oil, but it helps explain why basil has been valued as more than a flavoring herb for generations. (1)

Essential oil content is, of course, part of the whole herb. But the distilled essential oil is much more concentrated than fresh basil leaves, which is why we can enjoy basil freely as food while treating basil essential oil with more respect in topical, aromatic, cleaning, oral-care, and culinary use.

Here are the top uses of basil essential oil that demonstrate its protective capacity. Beyond the delicious fresh herb, the uses for basil essential oil are profound.

1. Potent Antibacterial

The problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is ever-growing, with the potential to become a major threat to public health. The search for effective solutions has been ongoing for some time now, and plant-based antimicrobials are one area researchers continue to explore.

While many of us believe that a paradigm shift away from fear-based germ theory needs to take place, there are also natural products that can help us tackle harmful bacteria without immediately reaching for harsher options. And it appears the antibacterial qualities of sweet basil oil might be one of them.

A 2003 in vitro study found basil essential oil strongly inhibitory against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates from the genera Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, and Pseudomonas. The researchers called the results encouraging because the test bacteria are widespread and create serious therapeutic difficulties due to high resistance. (2)

A 2025 food-safety study also reported that basil essential oil reduced bacterial proliferation and biofilm development on food-contact surfaces against multidrug-resistant fish-originated Salmonella and Bacillus strains. Current research is exciting here. A 2024 randomized, double-blind, active-controlled clinical trial compared a topical basil oil formulation in sesame oil with diclofenac gel for knee osteoarthritis. After four weeks, both groups improved in clinical symptoms and functional outcomes, and basil oil showed effects comparable to diclofenac gel in that study. The trial did not include a placebo group, and the sesame oil carrier may have contributed to the effect, but this is still important human research on topical basil oil. (4)

Basil essential oil has also shown analgesic activity in animal models. In a fibromyalgia animal model, Ocimum basilicum leaf essential oil, used alone or complexed with beta-cyclodextrin, produced analgesic effects in chronic non-inflammatory pain. (5)

A 2022 review of experimental, preclinical, and clinical literature reported that Ocimum basilicum and its main ingredients, including linalool, have shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, bronchodilatory, and respiratory-supporting effects in several models. Application: Periodic culinary inclusion or specific formulation by an aromatherapist trained in internal use. For topical digestive comfort, dilute 1 drop basil and 2 drops ginger in 1 tablespoon carrier oil and massage clockwise over the abdomen.
