[0:00 – 1:08] Prelude

Mama Z: So I tried soy ice cream, because I liked ice cream. I mean everybody in our family liked it. And I don’t really have ice cream very often.

Dr. Z: I like cookies.

Mama Z: You like cookies. You know, I haven’t had ice cream, I can’t even tell you, even like healthy ice cream like in a long time. But my grandma was so funny, bless her heart. She would always be like, she would ask everybody in the room, “Do you want ice cream? Do you want ice cream?” Until she got to a yes, and then literally in like five minutes she would have a whole Sunday bar out there, because she loved ice cream.

Dr. Z: Was that Grandma McKenzie?

Mama Z: It was. And I remember one time my cousin had really wanted chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. And she could not understand why anyone would want chocolate chip cookie dough in their ice cream. We have made a healthy style before, too. So she took out all the little balls in there, and she made cookies with it. She like mixed it up, added eggs, and made cookies with it, because she was like, “Why would anybody want to mess the ice cream up like that?” She would add toppings and she would toast coconut. I mean she would have the full spread out.

[1:09 – 1:42] Intro

Dr. Z: Hi! This is Dr. Z.

Mama Z: And this is Mama Z. And welcome to episode 14 of the Natural Living Family Podcast.

Dr. Z: Each week we invite you to our home to talk about how you can master the art and science of natural living. And we share the very same tips our family uses each and every day to enjoy and abundant life. And you’re going to love today’s talk.

But before we dive in to all the fun, we are excited to share a special note about today’s sponsor.

[1:43 – 2:30] Sponsor Spotlight: Air Doctor

Dr. Z: Most people don’t realize it, but the air that they breathe in their home is filled with mold spores, invisible gases, and dangerous volatile organic compounds that are constantly being emitted by their furniture, carpeting, paint, personal care and cleaning products.

Mama Z: This is a recipe for a health disaster. And we can personally testify to how polluted air almost devastated our health.

Dr. Z: Thankfully our friends at Air Doctor have a solution–their portable air purification system that anyone can afford.

Mama Z: As a special gift to our Natural Living Family Podcast listeners, Air Doctor is giving you three hundred dollars off when you buy through our special podcast link.

Dr. Z: Simply go to NaturalLivingFamilypodcast.com to find the special link so you could redeem this deal on the show notes from today’s episode.

[2:31 – 6:23] Diffuser Reveal: Cut Your Cravings Diffuser Blend

Well, hey there, everybody! Welcome to the show. Today we’re going to discuss living right for your body type. We’re going to talk about diet choices, food sensitivities, fitness, and more. Why? Because when God made you, He threw away the mold. And we are as individual as snowflakes, and we need to live that way.

Mama Z: Absolutely. But, before we talk about everything, we have to talk about what’s in our diffuser today.

Dr. Z: Yea! What’s in our diffuser?

Mama Z: Yea! So, this is a special blend from our book, The Essential Oils Diet. It’s your cut your cravings diffuser blend, and it’s on page 278. It is one drop of cinnamon, two drops of black pepper, and two drops of peppermint. However, I think I accidentally got two drops of cinnamon in there.

Dr. Z: I like the little extra cinnamon.

Mama Z: Yea, I do, too.

Dr. Z: I wonder if we should have our publisher reprint all the thousands of books and add an extra drop? Ha, ha, ha!

Mama Z: Well, so if you get a little crazy with the cinnamon, you’ll be fine.

Dr. Z: Well, that’s the nice thing about all the recipes in our book, is that you could just add a little bit, especially the oil recipes. Here, y’all, here’s a side tip. We will continue to give you lots and lots of essential oil tips as we go along with this podcast, hopefully for many years to come. But just know, a recipe is a guide. A recipe is not a firm, set, thou shalt have to do this. So if you see something, it’s not going to make a huge difference if you have an extra drop of this or a little drop of that.

Mama Z: Well, in fact, I always say if I meet you and you’ve had your book for awhile, either of our books, then I hope that that book is so marked up with all the different changes you want to make. Use it as a starting point, and then go from there. And make notes of what you do so you can figure out what you did, if you liked it, if you don’t. Definitely use pencil. And when you nail it down, write in pen. But write all over that book.

Dr. Z: I love it; love it, love it, love it!

Dr. Z: It actually reminds me of one of my professors. She was an older woman. She was kind of flirting with me at the time, because she saw my book. And my book, I’m a highlighter. I’m an ear dogger. Is that what they call ear dog, whatever, or dog-eared, like when you fold a piece of paper, dog ears?

Mama Z: I don’t know.

Dr. Z: So I’m a dog-ear, I’m a highlighter, I’m a note taker. And she looked at my book. She’s looked at my book. She’s like, “That’s a man after my own heart.” She looked and she saw my book.

Mama Z: And you know what? I would buy the used books in the book store that were like that.

Dr. Z: Ha, ha! I couldn’t. You see, I couldn’t. That’s the thing, I always had to buy new, because I had to create my own.

Mama Z: I was like, well, if these people went through this class, they obviously had it down. They had it dialed in, and I can just go from there, you know.

Dr. Z: What if they didn’t know what they were talking about?

Mama Z: Well, you can kind of tell if they like lost interest, because it wouldn’t be like that at the end. But if it was solid, I would flip through it. I’m like, oh my gosh, this person organizes like me. I know I’m going to like what they’re doing.

Dr. Z: Well, buy at your own risk. I’m a fan of new books. Mama Z is a fan of old books.

Mama Z: I love when people write in them. My mom’s cookbook has so much writing in it. And I think when she first got like her bread machine, she kept track of how many loaves of bread she made. And when she got to like ten thousand loaves of bread or whatever, she had little tally marks. And that bread book was like just written all in. “You can double this recipe.” “Only make this one once.” She tried every modification that you could possibly do for every recipe in that book.

Dr. Z: Wow! And was that bread gluten free?

Mama Z: No, it wasn’t. But we know how to do it.

Dr. Z: Which is the topic of next week’s episode. We’re talking about how yes, you can have your gluten-free cake and eat it, too. We’re going to walk you through all of that.

[6:24 – 13:06] Eating Right for Your Body Type

So, hey, we’re going to talk a lot today about essentially why we’re different, and how to live according to who we are. And let’s first talk about diet choices, eating right for your body type.

Mama Z: Absolutely. One of the books that we really liked was the Eat Right for Your Blood Type book. And I really feel like different books are a tool. And one of the things I liked about that book that I found was very true was when you looked at the positive things, like mine or Eric’s blood type was, I’m like, oh yea, I can resonate with that. And then they had the neutrals, and then they had to always avoid. And one of the things that I found with the always avoid was either I had already always avoided it, or when I ate it, it bothered my system.

And so I used that almost as a guide because your negatives and my negatives were somewhat different. And some of our positives were different. And I found as a tool, when we were starting to navigate our healthy journey, that was a good place to start. And one of the things that I found was that I had read the book and all of that, but they had these little teeny guide books that had all these little charts when it came to different, whether it was dairy or legumes and beans and all of these different things. They had it in different categories, and it said whether it was positive, negative, or neutral.

And so that was one of the ways that I looked for the overlap that you and I had, which was vegetables, a lot of vegetables. You and I could eat a lot of vegetables, where I couldn’t do a lot of the meat proteins and stuff like that, and you were a little bit different, too. But that was our overlap, vegetables. We could both do a lot of leafy greens and other vegetables.

Dr. Z: So what did you want the title of this podcast to be? Do you remember? You came up with this idea.

Mama Z: Oh, yea. Okay, this is really funny, because my family didn’t always eat for their blood type.

Dr. Z: What is your blood type?

Mama Z: My blood type is O negative.

Dr. Z: And I’m AB positive.

Mama Z: Yes, you’re AB positive.

Dr. Z: So you’re making a generalization about O’s.

Mama Z: A generalization.

Dr. Z: Your whole family is O’s.

Mama Z: All of my family is an O, everybody. My sister is an O negative. My other sister is an O positive.

Dr. Z: Cousins, aunts, and uncles, like you’re pretty much O’s.

Mama Z: O’s, lots of O’s. So my mom is O negative, and my dad is O positive. And beans are like something that does not work on the Richter scale there with the O’s. And my dad had tried every different type of Gas-X and different pills that you take before, enzymes, everything.

And they had a joke when they would have chili, someone would walk in the room, and he’s like, “Oh, it smells like stale farts in here.” “Well, I’ve got a fresh one for you. We just had chili.” And I’m like, oh my gosh; that’s so embarrassing. But it was so true. And they didn’t figure out until later. And now they avoid the beans; like they make chili without beans. And they avoid it. And my dad is like, “Yep, I’ve tried every remedy out there. There’s nothing that just works there with the system, or everybody else gets punished if I ate beans.”

So do yourself a favor. And make a mental note and take down, know what foods are good for your body and what work for your body and what ones don’t work for your body. There are definitely ones that you can resonate with, whether it’s beans, or it’s other things.

For me, fresh onions, because they attract bacteria, unless I pull them out of my garden and cut them, I have to use dried. And the ones from the store, we know that our food travels on average one to two thousand miles before it ever makes the grocery store. And it’s attracting all that bacteria all this time. And I remember you saying to me, “I think you’re nuts about those onions.” And you were in school, and they had mentioned about that. And you were like, “Well, I found out today you’re not nuts.” I was like, oh, great. What about it?

Dr. Z: Yea, because onions are like sponges for bacteria.

Mama Z: Yes, absolutely. So if you’re sick, you cut an onion in half and leave it by your bedside stand, and it will turn dark. It helps absorb bacteria and other things like that. And garlic is very similar like that, too.

Dr. Z: “So why does it smell like stale farts in here? Here’s a fresh one for you.” That was Mama Z’s request for the title of today’s podcast. But that didn’t make the cut.

Mama Z: I didn’t have to, but that literally, just in that alone, I can hear my dad saying it.

Dr. Z: You know, half of what your dad says is like the topic for this podcast.

Mama Z: He was good for those one-liners, you know, like seriously. But the bottom line is, we have to figure out what works for us individually. What works for me individually does not work for Dr. Z individually and does not work for each of our kids. And, you know, you have to look at what we’re putting in our bodies, what comes out of our bodies, and how that all works, and if it’s going to be healthy for your system, and making adjustments accordingly.

And you know, you get to the point where the pain isn’t worth what you’re doing, whether it’s all the inflammatories like the glutens and the sugars and the dairies are bothering you, and then you feel terrible afterwards. I can tell you so many times before I figured out, my gut was wrecked after eating out. And if you look at every sauce, everything that is topped on salads, on every dish that is served, it has those ingredients in it. And no wonder my digestive system was wrecked.

And the preservatives that they spray on the greens, twenty minutes I would be running for the rest room. And that was before I was aware of all of that. So I know that there are people out there that don’t know why things are bothering them or why they feel bad after they eat out or whatever. But these are some of the things that once you figure out and dial them in for you, that’s when you make changes. And those changes are what change your life.

[13:07 – 20:18] Navigating Beans, Grains, and Sprouting

Dr. Z: Now I know this isn’t a beans class. But let’s talk a little bit about how you navigated through beans, because I think you need to clarify what you said. It’s not all beans for O’s.

Mama Z: Correct.

Dr. Z: Like your mom and dad and you. But black beans specifically has triggered. But what beans have you found that are good for you?

Mama Z: Well black beans are the ones that are most neutral for me.

Dr. Z: Neutral, okay.

Mama Z: It’s the pinto beans and the kidney beans and the Northern beans and some of those other ones that are really, really hard for me. One of the other ones that I find I’m okay with is the garbanzo beans, the chickpeas.

Dr. Z: So if you’re an O blood type and if you have chili, just for example, you might want to steer away from those, the can of organic chili beans, because they include black beans, pinto beans, all of those different beans, navy beans. You can make chili and soup around the beans that work for you. Because here’s the thing, y’all, don’t believe what you’re seeing out there in this anti-carb movement that says lectins and beans and all these carbohydrate, fiber rich, starch rich foods are bad for you. People have lived on beans since the beginning of time, and they’re a staple.

Mama Z: And one of the things that you can do, too, if you have sensitivities, to try to see if taking the dried beans, the organic dried beans, and soaking them overnight and then rinsing them the next day, sometimes that will help, too.

But for me, certain ones still affected my digestive system. So that’s why I knew that even soaking, even rinsing, and doing all these different things, that is still a trigger for me. And so, you know, literally only on special occasions when we make like our five-bean salad, and sometimes even when we make that, I’ll change all the beans up. I’ll do green beans, and wax beans, and the chickpeas. And I’ll do totally different ones just so that I can make sure that they’re good for my digestive system.

And it’s funny, because any person that’s ever tried my five-bean salad know that there are just a bunch of beans in there. So, you know, it’s just a way that you can have fun and do different things other than what’s in the recipe. And that’s why again, it’s important to write in your recipe books.

Dr. Z: So we have this idea that something is good for you. And you go read an article or you read in a book and you eat it, and you just don’t feel good after it. So something to think about is there could be something in that product that’s causing a reaction. And what’s normal and what’s not normal? I want to talk about that in just a minute.

But one thing that you said, we’re going to cover a lot more in the next episode, when we talk about grains and gluten, is sprouting. And so that’s what you’re doing, if you’re getting dried beans, chickpeas, green peas, all these different legumes, anything that you can get, if you put them in some water and overnight soak them, you’re helping to start the sprouting process. And see what happens is, and I don’t want to steal our thunder from the next episode, but you’re starting to activate natural enzymes. You’re starting to activate more bioavailability.

Mama Z: For that food.

Dr. Z: Yes. And that’s sprouting is. The way that we have produced and manufactured food is so unnatural now that we completely forget the whole fermentation and sprouting phases of just how normal people have used foods since the beginning of time. It goes right from the farm, right to the container, right to the store. And everything is a very antiseptic, very dry environment.

But when you go back a thousand years ago, they would harvest the beans. They didn’t have containers like we do. They didn’t have refrigeration. They didn’t have air vacuuming. So they would like let them air out, dry out. And there would be a lot of moisture. And they didn’t know what they were doing. They were sprouting and not even realizing it.

So what you’re saying is, one reason why beans or peas or things might bother you is they’re not sprouted, and they need to be rinsed off properly. They need to be sprouted, and they need to be cooked accordingly, right? And that’s the kind of stuff that we cover in our book, The Essential Oils Diet, because people don’t realize. “Why am I hurting? It’s supposed to be good for me?”

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: Maybe it’s something in your body, too. And maybe your body has been damaged. And one of the reasons why a lot of foods are still sensitive to you is because your gut was so damaged as a young girl. You know, you’ve had gut issues since you’ve been a little girl, right?

Mama Z: Yea.

Dr. Z: You were more sensitive than some people.

Mama Z: I am. And, you know, it’s kind of funny because I had a baby sitter. We actually went to his mother’s house a couple of times a week so my mom could get work done for her business. And then she ended up hiring all the kids in their family to baby sit us at different times in their life. Like one would come through and be an intern, and then they would be a baby sitter. And we made it through all the kids that they had.

And I was two years old. And my mom said that literally, because I had chronic diarrhea, I filled my shoes with poop every single day. And it was years later I ran into this person. He was in charge of a bank. And he was one of our clients when I worked for Desagana Spirit. And he talked about baby- sitting me as a little kid. I’m like, oh my gosh, please do not mention that story.

Dr. Z: Oh man!

Mama Z: But that was mainstay. And so I had to go on an elimination diet when I was really young, just because that was one of the problems. I was eating like carob treats and stuff like that, because things had bothered my system. And they thought that maybe chocolate was a contributing factor. And it was probably the sugar that was actually the contributing factor. But there were like a lot of different things that lined up.

And, in fact, meat used to bother my stomach as well. And so a funny story about that, I sat next to the coupon drawer. And I hated having meat, because I knew what it did to my system. And so like I would hide my meat in a napkin and then hide it in the coupon drawer, because I knew my mom wouldn’t find it until the next time she went to the super market and was using coupons.

And then I would get in trouble.

Dr. Z: You were a stinker.

Mama Z: I tried hiding food behind the couch. I tried different things.

Dr. Z: You were a stinker pants.

Mama Z: I was.

Dr. Z: So that’s where the kids get it. See, that’s proof. Everyone listening, that’s proof. So every time I say she gets that from you, he gets that from you, it’s true.

Mama Z: But you can’t blame everything on me.

Dr. Z: I wasn’t ornery when I was a kid. I was the perfect kid. I really was. My brother, bless his heart, he was the Dennis the Menace.

Mama Z: So you’re getting your non-perfectness out now?

Dr. Z: No, but whenever our kids show imperfections, they got that from you. Hah, hah, hah!

Mama Z: Oh, okay. Hah, hah, hah!

[20:19 – 29:23] How Biochemical Individuality Factors into Nutrition

Dr. Z: Anyway, no, we’re joking. So why do our bodies react to certain foods differently? And more importantly, we are going to transition more into food sensitivities in a minute. But we’ve got to remember biochemical individuality. Like really, our chemistries are different. We are different people, whether it’s because of your ancestry, your blood type, where you live, the drugs that you’re taking, the supplements that you’re on, the foods that you eat. We are completely different.

And essentially we are walking chemistry labs. And it’s kind of hard to think about that, but it’s true. And that’s where blood panels come into play. That’s why people can measure their pH, whether they’re alkaline or acidic and all these different things. But all of it starts in early age.

Now truth be told, there is a genetic component to this. And that’s why I wanted Mama Z to share her story about O blood type and being adverse to beans. You know, so here’s the thing, if you eat something, and this is a good rule of thumb, how do you know if something is bothering you or if you’re sensitive to something?

Well, if you have an adverse reaction, it’s not normal. I mean gas is not normal directly after eating, and having gas for an hour straight. You know, a toot here, a toot there, flatulence, the medical term for it, a few times. I think the average person has flatulence fifteen to twenty times a day. If you eat and you have fifteen or twenty times the next ten minutes, that’s a sign that’s something is wrong. A little bit of bloating, right?

Mama Z: Yea, bloating is a big sign for me.

Dr. Z: Bloating, what else?

Mama Z: You know, definitely if I eat something ten to twenty minutes later and I’m like running for the restroom, that’s a sign.

Dr. Z: Diarrhea.

Mama Z: Yep.

Dr. Z: Oral cavity concerns, like your lips get dry, your tongue swells up.

Mama Z: Yep, if I have unnatural salt or if there are any preservatives or sugar, my tongue swells and my lips get really dry.

Dr. Z: Yea.

Mama Z: And then sometimes I feel like I have the big juicer. Like my tongue just feels like it’s ginormous. And literally it like swells all up. Yea, I remember you get the fuzziness. And so you’ve got to mark these markers in your body.

Dr. Z: You’ve got to know them.

Mama Z: They are different for different people; but if you feel a certain way. I remember as I was testing different things, the trial and error method, I remember my mom saying, wow, you look like you got punched in the face. And that’s when I really realized that I had a big sugar sensitivity or allergy, because my face just physically looked different.

Dr. Z: You should feel good after you eat.

Mama Z: Yes.

Dr. Z: Let me repeat that. You should feel good, and if you don’t overeat, energetic after you eat, because it’s fuel.

Mama Z: Right. If you feel like you need to go in the wheely chair, you know the desk chair that spins around, to get out to the door when you’re done, then you ate too much. And that is not comfortably filled. And really, you know, if you look at the size of your fist, that’s usually about the size of your stomach. And if your main portion is way bigger than that, then that’s a bad sign.

Dr. Z: But you should have a bowel movement relatively soon after you eat, too. You should feel good, meaning no adverse reaction. You should not be overly thirsty after you eat. That’s a sign that there’s something wrong, like a lot more sodium that you need. Again, there’s this balance, the place where your body receives food and it converts that food into healthy cells and heals your body and your body responds well to it. But when you eat something outside of that, there’s a reaction. And oftentimes it’s because of your own individual biochemical individuality.

And it all starts at an early age. And people might wonder why. Like why did Sabrina have these issues? Well, she was more genetically bent toward that, because her sisters don’t all have the same issues. And assuming that they were raised, like we always hear the same thing, like twin siblings raised exactly alike. One person has these health issues. The other one has the other issues. And they’re twins. They’re identical in every way.

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: So think about this. There is a genetic component, where some people are just for some reason, only known to God, really, they respond to things. But here are things that every one of us can relate to. And in early childhood, many of the reasons why so many of us have food issues and food sensitivities and just certain things react differently to us is because at an early age we’re vaccinated. At an early age, we start taking antibiotics. And starting at an early age, people are on the standard American diet.

And for you, Sabrina, it’s no wonder that you’re so sensitive to preservatives, because we know how many preservatives are in vaccines, right? And so, this isn’t a vaccine class; which by the way, a lot of you have asked us about a vaccine class.

But to know that when you are inundating a baby, an infant, with loads of preservatives through these vaccines, which is why, if you do choose to vaccinate your child, please, please, by God’s grace, get them on a modified schedule where at least they get them over a course of time. The amount of vaccines a child gets now are four to five times the amount we had, and then ten times the amount of our parents. It’s just a lot.

So we’re seeing a lot more food sensitivities now because of the extra drugs, extra vaccines.

Mama Z: And I am so allergic to preservatives.

Dr. Z: It could trigger an allergy from the way you ate.

Mama Z: I’ll share one of the things. So here I’m in college and then after. And I brush my teeth with regular toothpaste. And I would have these pieces in my mouth. And I couldn’t figure out what it was. I kept pulling like sloughing gums off. And so, you know, I went to the dentist. And they asked me questions like, “Have you ever chewed tobacco?” and all this stuff. I’m like, do my teeth look like it, because I’ve never done anything like that. I mean, look at my teeth. They don’t.

And they’re like, “No, it’s the weirdest thing.” So my best friend who does nails was doing my nails. And we were trading out services. And she looked at my nails and she said, “I can’t do your manicure.” And I said, “Why?” And she goes, “Well, I can, but I can’t put any polish on. Do you know you have a serious allergy to formaldehyde?” And I said, “No.” And she goes, “Your nail beds, you have no nail on there right now. Like there’s nothing I can buffen. I can’t polish. I can put oil on there. But if you didn’t know that, you’re going to have to let this rest for a month, because you can’t do that.”

So I was like, huh. So I looked up derivatives of formaldehyde and other things like that. And because I had sloughing nails, it made me think about my gums. So she and I put the pieces together and figured out that I was allergic to the aspartame, because that’s a derivative of formaldehyde, that I was allergic to that. And I looked at the toothpaste. Sure enough, there it was.

Dr. Z: Of course.

Mama Z: And as soon as I stopped doing that, it stopped. So I told the dentist. And they were like, “Oh my gosh! That makes so much sense.” And so then I started looking at what other things were. And, of course, being an Rh factor, because you’re AB positive and I’m O negative, with the children, so I have to get what’s called the RhoGAM shot with the kids, because I need the antibodies in case I have a different blood type, a different positive/negative blood type than the baby. If there’s any blood mixing, my body could reject the pregnancy.

So I remember a couple of times having to wait like two or three extra hours for the RhoGAM shot without any thimerosal or mercury in it. And now they make it completely free of both of those. But I just remember having to wait so long, because I know what that does to my body. And I have had adverse reactions to things of that nature.

Dr. Z: And we could cause these sensitivities and allergies to our children. We can cause them to ourselves by exposing ourselves. It’s essentially the reason why people become sensitized to certain essential oils. It’s too much chemicals. The body develops an allergic reaction to it. That’s why you always have to dilute your essential oils, because if you just slather essential oils on your skin, you can become sensitized to them, and you might not be able to ever use them without a negative reaction.

[29:24 – 31:59] The Additional Factors that Can Impact Your Nutrition

So, folks, this is real science. This makes sense. And so we have to remember our chemistry, our body’s chemistry changes all the time, which is why sometimes eating right for your body type might be different today than it might be a year from now, because you’re a different person. You might lose twenty pounds. You might have gotten divorced. Maybe you got married and you had a baby.

And I’ve noticed something about you. And we’ll talk about this in a bit. But you’ve changed a lot every kid. Every pregnancy, your body morphs. And you attract to certain foods, other foods. You know, you’ve had your course since we met. But I have noticed a big change.

So we’ve covered some causes to these body type issues or these food type issues based off your body type. Root causes are, I’ll list a couple–genetic disposition, and a lot of this is environmental. Okay, I want to say it is the case, like Sabrina has mentioned with the O blood type and things with beans, there is a genetic component. But I have found it’s mostly environmental. And that goes back to the vaccines, the drugs, the antibiotics, and the foods that we’re introducing at a young age. This could cause a reaction to things that we are exposed to, like primarily food, for the rest of our lives.

Another cause is inflammation. And we cover so much about inflammation in our book. Inflammation is the number one cause of disease, period, exclamation point! No one at this point would argue that. It’s linked to cancer, autoimmunity, gut disorders like leaky gut, and so many things. So we need to really focus on anti-inflammatory foods, anti-inflammatory thoughts, anti-inflammatory stress techniques, because our thoughts, our foods, the things that we drink, the toxins, potential things that we put on our skin, can all cause inflammation.

And this could create an environment where your body will develop what’s known as leaky gut. And at the end of the episode today, I’m going to give my proven by research recipe that has been shown to heal leaky gut. And so many people have gut issues because of inflammation. And so many people have inflammation because of their diet, toxic thoughts, emotional disturbances, and depression, and anxiety, and drugs. So we’re going to cover that at the end of the show.

But next, Sabrina, we’re going to talk about food sensitivities and how people can avoid them and, like your case, cure them. But before we cover that, a word from our sponsor.

[33:10 – 42:48] Mama Z’s Battle with Food Sensitivities

Dr. Z: So I think we covered this in part in a previous episode.

Mama Z: Part.

Dr. Z: But tell us about your food sensitivity story and how God cured you.

Mama Z: Well, one of the things that I want to mention is I remember, not knowing that I was sensitive to dairy, and very sensitive. And I would have cereal in the morning and then go to school. And then all of a sudden by ten o’clock, my stomach would go blagh, blagh, blagh, blagh.

Dr. Z: Yea, me too. It was miserable.

Mama Z: And then at lunch I would have yogurt, milk, cheese on a sandwich or something else. And then by 1 o’clock my stomach would be blagh, blagh, blagh. But what I didn’t realize was when I had oatmeal, because I made it with water, I didn’t have those problems for a season. I was like at first I thought nobody could hear my stomach but me. And then people said, “Did you hear that?” And so I literally cut out breakfast. I cut out breakfast because I was like, I don’t want to deal with that.

Dr. Z: Wow!

Mama Z: And then a little bit later I was like, I don’t know what it is in my lunch, but it’s bothering my stomach and it makes all those noises. So I cut out lunch. So then I was eating one meal a day. And my grandpa called me the snake. “Well she only comes out once a day to eat, but boy can she eat.”

Dr. Z: Ha, ha, ha. The snake, I never heard that before. That’s why I love these podcasts. Seriously, you come out with this stuff.

Mama Z: It was so funny. And for a season I did. And then I realized that when I would have oatmeal and stuff like that, because I would make it with water, it didn’t make my stomach sound like that. And I never put milk on oatmeal. I just never did that. And so I remember, I’m like I’ve got to figure this out, because I realized when I would have certain things I would have stomach issues.

And I started relating that it could be this dairy thing, you know. That’s when I thought I’m going to get two pints of ice cream. I’m going to eat two pints of ice cream, and I’m going to test this theory out. Whoa! It was bad. It was really bad. And I remember being at a church meeting, and I had these two pints of ice cream in my stomach.

Dr. Z: You did it before the church meeting?

Mama Z: Well, I had done it way earlier in the day. I didn’t think I was still going to be plagued by this hours later.

Dr. Z: You should probably do it at the end of the day if you’re doing such a test.

Mama Z: Yea, you know, I probably should. And I always knew, because with other people having digestive issues in my family, I knew that laying on my left side would help open up things as far as the stomach goes. So I would lay on my left side at night.

So I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t like doing anything like sleeping that would counteract the foods that I was putting in my body. So not very smart. I did this in the middle of the day.

So I remember being at this church meeting. And like I remember somebody saying, “Are you okay?” And I was like, “Maybe. I think I might just have to go to the bathroom.” And I like literally had to leave. So I was like, “I think I’m going to go.” And so I went home. And I remember my mom like knocking on the bathroom door. “Are you okay?” And she was like, “There’s a lot of large noises coming out of such a little body in there.” And I just remember it was literally like an eye-opening moment for me.

Dr. Z: Wow! How old were you?

Mama Z: I was in college. And so then I thought to myself, I will try soy milk. So, I tried soy ice cream, because I liked ice cream, I mean everybody in our family. And I don’t really have ice cream very often.

Dr. Z: I like cookies.

Mama Z: You like cookies. You know, I haven’t had ice cream, I can’t even tell you, like even healthy ice cream in a long time. But my grandma was so funny, bless her heart. She would always be like, she would ask everybody in the room, “Do you want ice cream? Do you want ice cream?” Until she got to a yes, and then literally in like five minutes she would have a whole like Sunday bar out there, because she loved ice cream.

Dr. Z: Was that Grandma McKenzie?

Mama Z: It was. And I remember one time my cousin had really wanted chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. And she could not understand why anyone would want chocolate chip cookie dough in their ice cream. We’ve made it healthy style before, too. And so she took out all the little balls in there, and she made cookies with it.

Dr. Z: Hah, hah, hah.

Mama Z: She like mixed it up, added eggs, and made cookies with it. She was like, “Why would anybody want to mess the ice cream up like that?” She would add toppings, and she would toast coconut. I mean she would have the full spread out.

Dr. Z: And then everyone would have gas and indigestion afterwards? Or you would. You would keel over.

Mama Z: Yea, that really took my stomach to a different level. But I found with soy ice cream the same thing happened.

Dr. Z: Everyone finds that with soy, the same thing.

Mama Z: So I was like, what’s my option? And I was like, okay, there’s no option. So, you know, when I made eggs, I never added milk to them. I didn’t know you could add water to them until I learned that years later. And so I literally just avoided it. And I literally had thought to myself, I have to just avoid everything that has this in it. They didn’t have alternatives then. I think the first alternative they had was a rice milk.

Dr. Z: And high with sugar. All that stuff was pure sugar.

Mama Z: It wasn’t as good of an alternative. You know now, learning how to make your own healthy non-dairy cheeses. But at one point I thought, okay, well, maybe it’s just the lactose. So I tried lactate. I tried lactose free milk. I tried all the different things, and it still bothered my stomach. So all these just different trials and errors, I got to a point where there were only four different foods that really I knew I could eat and not feel sick afterwards.

And that was really hard, because I didn’t really know how to navigate through all of that. Plus, being on different prescription medicines about the same time, I had taken one for stomach stuff, which caused other stomach stuff, and then another one for that, and then all these different medicines.

And I knew there was a better way. I knew that God had a better plan. And that’s when my pastor talked about fasting and the dynamics of fasting. And this was like an area that I was like really trying to overcome. And I felt like I had gotten to the place where I had gotten off, I think, one of the medicines, because it was a total of ten. And I had already gotten off of one that I had taken myself off of. And really, I felt it was time to do this fasting.

And I didn’t know at the time that I would water fast for ten days. But I remember really feeling like it was time for me to get free of all of these medicines. And so doing that water fast really helped to reset my system. And it was really cool. Like I just remember, of course, black stuff coming out of my pores like day three or four. And it must have been just toxins from the different medicines and stuff.

But I just remember feeling so much lighter. Just like my body had felt really bogged down. And I felt lighter, and not because I had lost like a massive amount of weight. It was just a difference that had happened within my system.

And I felt like I had hope that I could figure this out. Like I knew God would show me. And I was praying that God would show me. And then, of course, I met you.

Dr. Z: Ah.

Mama Z: Ah.

Dr. Z: You look so pretty, by the way, today.

Mama Z: Oh, you’re so sweet.

Dr. Z: I love you. You know, I’m not really a gold person, but I’m really liking the whole gold earrings. And you’ve got to move. Your necklace keeps on going in your shirt. Show everyone your necklace.

Mama Z: I taught him how to buy jewelry in sets. So guys, that’s like a key.

Dr. Z: But we met.

Mama Z: Anyway, he got me this jewelry. So we met. And you know, you did, you ate green or brown everything.

Dr. Z: It was healthy, really healthy.

Mama Z: Really healthy.

Dr. Z: I was juicing every day, making smoothies. I was like eating grass out of the front yard. I was like a cow!

Mama Z: Just about.

Dr. Z: A skinny cow.

Mama Z: Yea, exactly. And I remember just a lot of salads, a lot of vegetables. We didn’t do salad dressings. It was just balsamic vinegar and olive oil. And then I noticed like a month later, I had lost like twenty pounds. And it was all the inflammation my body was holding on to because of all these other things. I mean, you can only pretty much eat four foods without getting sick.

Dr. Z: You had a lot of water weight. Like at one point you looked like a chipmunk with her cheeks stuffed with the nuts, because I remember at one point you really just started bloating. It was all out of it for you. It was just water retention.

Mama Z: Yea.

Dr. Z: That’s what happens to a lot of people. And you know, folks, that’s we cover.

Mama Z: A chipmunk, hah, hah!

Dr. Z: It was like a chipmunk, I know. That’s what we cover in our book, The Essential Oils Diet.

[42:49 – 45:30] Are You Ready to Change Your Life?

Dr. Z: And for people that want to learn how Sabrina did this and how we’ve adapted these techniques over the years, we actually have a fourteen-day boot camp book. We call it “The 14-Day Essential Oil Diet Boot Camp.” And you can download this for free. It’s our gift for you. It’s like you give us two weeks, just two weeks, and we’ll all but promise you (a) results, but we’ll promise you change, life change. And you’ll be challenged. It’s a boot camp.

Mama Z: Yes.

Dr. Z: It’s called boot camp for a reason.

Mama Z: Yes, for a reason. You’ve got to detox.

Dr. Z: And you just go to EODBootCamp.com. And we’re going to walk you through some really fundamental concepts like food journaling, what foods to stay away from. Like this is a very user friendly modified elimination diet. Like we don’t you to have to go down to four foods like Sabrina did to find what was going on. We’ve really narrowed it down to several different groups of foods, with hundreds of options within each.

But we’re going to walk you through some of the no no’s. And there are certain things that are absolutely non-negotiable. And dairy is one of them. I’m telling you it is one of the number one causes of inflammation and mucus and allergy forming habits. And we’re going to help you break the dairy habit first, and then help you reinstitute dairy the right way, if you ever go back to dairy.

We like some raw cheeses here and there. But we don’t do any of the milks anymore. You know, butter,

Mama Z: It’s really considered a fat, not a dairy.

Dr. Z: Yea, you want to consider that. So the key, though, with a lot of this is knowing what affects you in a negative way.

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: And that’s why you have to have a health journal. We’ve talked about this many times in the past on this podcast. And if you don’t have a health journal, start with a food journal. And that could just be write down the things that you are eating throughout the day. And during this fourteen-day challenge, that’s part of it, because we want you to be really deliberate about what you’re eating.

And then here’s the key, though. Make a note of any time you get an adverse reaction, whether it’s gas, diarrhea, fuzzy tongue, whatever, brain fog. I mean you name it, it could happen. And so you’ll note, maybe every time I eat these certain kind of foods, I feel this way. And then you could start to narrow things down. And again, go to EODBootCamp.com, and we’ll walk you through how to do that, straight from our best-selling book, EssentialOilsDiet.com. We’re giving you a really nice little cool cheat sheet.

[45:31 – 49:59] Do You REALLY Have to Exercise?

Dr. Z: But to wrap up this show, you know, we’ve talked a lot about food. And food is a big, big deal. But what about exercise?

Mama Z: Yes.

Dr. Z: You’re the exercise guru of our family, for sure. And when I met you, it was kind of cool, because I’m more of like the healthy food guy. I was able to help you a lot with food, when you’ve been teaching fitness classes for over a decade when I met you. So I just absorbed into your world. I never forget going to Smitty’s and doing your kickboxing class, and that was like our dates. I loved it, by the way.

So talk a little bit about exercising right for your body type. And we want to talk about modifications, how to gradually scale up, and just some really good tips there.

Mama Z: Right. So if you’re just starting or getting back into things, aqua fitness is a great way, because it does very effectively move junk out of your lymph system. And we’ve got to get things moving in and out of our body. We cannot be sedentary. And in order for a process of change to happen in or body, we’ve got to stay in motion.

So especially during the time when I was doing my water fasting, I was running and doing a lot of walking. And so that’s another one. So if you’re not a runner or that’s not something that you’re thinking about, walking or biking, those are all really good tips of where to start.

But one of the things that we have in our book, too, is a variety of different exercises. And those exercises are great because they’re good for your body type just with your own body’s resistance. And so it doesn’t matter.

Dr. Z: They’re home exercises.

Mama Z: Home exercises. It’s not going to matter if it’s you or me or somebody else, it’s your own body’s resistance against yourself. So no matter where you’re at in the process, you’ll be able to do a lot of these exercises. And, you know, whether it’s the Santa Clauses that I’ve taught over the years, or other people that I’ve helped lose a hundred and fifty pounds, when I start people off, I want to see where people are at to assess them. And you’ve got to assess yourself.

And so, you know, like for instance one of my friends, when we started her training, she wasn’t able to get down on the ground. And that was something that was very scary for her, because she didn’t want have to get stuck or feel like she was stuck down there. And so one of the things that we did for a modification, because you can do certain things in a chair, but we did pushups on the wall. And that’s where we started. And then we slowly worked down. Basically we worked down the steps of the stairs to get down to the place where pushups were then on the last step.

And another modification is, let’s say, doing squats.

Dr. Z: Yea.

Mama Z: So for me, we always want to make sure our knees don’t go over our toes, of course, the safety aspect. But I’m going to sit all the way down. Maybe if you’re just starting out, if you did less reps, or let’s say you didn’t go all the way down yet, and then you worked your way lower, that’s a way of scaling it up. Or, now you’ve gotten one set down really well, so let’s do another set.

Another one is arm circles. Having arm circles, it’s your own body’s resistance. So one of the things that I noticed, people lose a lot of weight in their arms. And when you start it with arm circles, it’s your own body’s heaviness on the arms doing the arm circles. And I have literally seen people who were reconnaissance marines cry on this exercise because it is that awesome.

Dr. Z: Yea, I remember, and I don’t know if I was, again, more afraid of you or more turned on when I first about this, but what was his name, the sniper?

Mama Z: Tim.

Dr. Z: Yea, Tim, the sniper. We’ll keep his name clean, because he’s anonymous, because he’s still serving our country. Thank you, by the way, for those of you who serve our country like Tim. Tim was a sniper. And he threw up like during your exercise. I remember.

Mama Z: He left.

Dr. Z: Yea, but he threw up. He vomited. Like your exercise was so intense. So anyways, Sabrina can be a little intense here. She’s making marines vomit over here.

[50:00 – 58:03] Exercising Right for Your Body Type

Mama Z: So listen, that’s why over the years I came up with a lot of modifications. Even if you are in shape, there are certain exercises that wherever you’re at fitness wise, they’re going to affect you.

Dr. Z: Yep.

Mama Z: And then there are certain things like you might be stronger in arms. Somebody might be stronger in legs. And so it’s working with your strengths.

Dr. Z: See, that’s what we’ve got to talk about.

Mama Z: Working with your weaknesses.

Dr. Z: Exercising right for your body type.

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: So like we mentioned earlier, you should feel good after eating. You should feel good after exercising, now, unless you push yourself. But you need to exercise according to your body type. And some people are made like me. I’m tall, I’m slender by nature. I’m a, what did you say? What sport have you always said my body is made for? Do you remember?

Mama Z: What sport?

Dr. Z: Like speed skating.

Mama Z: Oh yea, you literally would be a great speed skater.

Dr. Z: Yea, it’s my body type. Or running. My body type is made for running. My body type is made for sprinting. My body type is made for these sorts of things. Others, I’m just not the guy that’s going to win a heavyweight competition like weight lifting. I’m just not that guy.

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: Actually, it’s hard for me to build muscle mass. But it’s really easy for me to trim down and get ripped if I exercise appropriately. So you need to find what works for you.

Mama Z: And you don’t want to gravitate to certain exercises that you like, because you want to do what’s good for your body. And so you might like certain exercises because they’re easier to you, or they’re a natural fit for you. But you’ve got to make sure that you do a balanced approach.

Dr. Z: So what are some tips? We just talked about the tips about a food, like a good food you feel good, a negative food–gas, bloating, headaches, all that. So exercise wise, what are signs that this is not the exercise for you?

Mama Z: Well, there are a couple of things, because there’s a difference between having your muscles feel sore. Soreness is good. Things that are like hurting, like serious pain.

Dr. Z: Pain, sharp, throbbing.

Mama Z: Sharp, throbbing pain.

Dr. Z: Burning.

Mama Z: And sometimes you have to wait that out, because there is a period when you’re starting back into working out where you have to get through that phase first, because you’ve got a lot of extra lactic acid buildup and stuff. And you’ve got to get that out of your system.

Dr. Z: But here’s the thing. Sharp stabbing pain, never. That’s the thing. Soreness, all day long every day. That’s normal. Throbbing, we’re getting up to the point where it’s a little bit too much. Maybe you pushed yourself. But if it’s ever sharp, stabbing pain, that’s a neurological issue. Now we’re dealing with the nerves. Now we’re dealing with impingement on your spine.

Mama Z: And some people are like, “How can you tell the difference?” And that is by walking it out and doing certain things and testing it. Let’s say if I did one workout one day, another workout another day, another workout another day, and had it so varied that I didn’t know what caused it, then that’s a problem. So when you’re getting into an exercise routine, having a component like exercises, having a physical component like aqua fitness, walking, running, biking, something where you’re doing an aerobic activity like that for a period of time, then you can kind of see what things are good for your body.

And try to vary those things, and then the exercises as well. And what I find, like when people first start out, when you get to that push through period, where you can do two miles a day walking at a good swift pace, then at first when you first start out, your legs will be itchy and there’s stuff going on. Your pores are like literally retraining yourself how to sweat again, and other things that may haven’t happened in a while.

And so you get through that phase. You get through that soreness phase. And it’s not that you’re not going to be sore, because there are always going to be workouts if you’ve pushed yourself. And it’s cool, because when I’ve talked to people who’ve lost a lot of weight, they’ve said, “You know, we get to like a plateau. And then I knew I had to step it up to the next level, and then step it up to the next level.”

And people are so surprised at how quickly their body adapts, whether it’s to exercise, or the type of exercises that they’re doing. But yea, if it’s this throbbing pain, then absolutely no.

Dr. Z: And there are certain things that you need to be aware of in regards to how you feel afterwards. It is normal to be fatigued after an exercise. And it’s normal to want to sleep more and to have to sleep more, because your body is recovering.

Mama Z: That’s right.

Dr. Z: But that’s short lived. There’s a point when you will be so energetic, and this is called the runner’s high, or what’s addictive about exercise. You will be more energetic after you exercise. If you find yourself doing a routine and you’re chronically fatigued, that’s not a good sign. That’s the wrong exercise for your body type.

And this is where a lot of the group fitness, and this could be CrossFit or Orangetheory or things that people have. And somebody who’s body type A might not be ready for that, or they might never be ready for that. They go and they feel horrible. And they’re pushing through. They’re doing energy drinks and coffee just to get through the day. That’s counterproductive.

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: So again, we’re big fans of all these group exercises. And Orangetheory is one of Sabrina’s sponsors for her pageant. So we’re not downplaying Orangetheory. But Orangetheory isn’t for everybody. That’s an intense one hour worth of workout. And maybe somebody’s body isn’t ready for that or might never be, but you have to find what works for you.

And that’s the other thing. Any sort of pain, excessive fatigue, and other than that, that’s pretty much where I’ve seen that you could find out how your exercises are best for you. These are markers that you really can’t mistake, right?

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: You can’t mistake. And when you start exercising the right way, you feel good. Just like how when you eat the right way, you feel good.

So here’s a key. Here’s a special gift for you guys and gals listening. When you preorder our book, or if you’re listening after May 7, The Essential Oils Diet publishes May 7, 2019, Mama Z created how many, three hours worth, 2 and half hours worth?

Mama Z: It’s a bunch.

Dr. Z: So a couple of hours worth of demo videos on how to do the essential exercises from the book, The Essential Oils Diet.

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: And what do you do? You go to EssentialOilsDiet.com, first buy the book, fill out the form, and we’ll give you all those demo videos, plus a lot of other free books that we’ll be sure to talk about in future podcast episodes. You are going to love this special book package, because it’s our way of helping you, right?

Mama Z: Yes.

Dr. Z: Because you could read something on a page, but you’re like, “Well, how exactly do I position my pinky?”

Mama Z: And we’re about giving you the fishing pole and having you be able to figure out what works best for you and your body and your body type and

put that together.

Dr. Z: And all of it’s free.

Mama Z: And all of it’s free. And in the group fitness model just over the years, I know that these exercises have helped so many people. And so many people have been encouraged and have seen so many body changes and stuff like that. And so we wanted to make sure that not only you kind of know what to do with a written explanation, but you would be able to see it, because not all people are visual learners. And not all people are able to just read it and be able to do it.

Dr. Z: Yep.

Mama Z: So you get it both ways.

Dr. Z: Yea. And so we’re big fans of group fitness. We’re big fans of home fitness. And especially for those of you who travel, that’s a lot of great stuff about the book right there.

Mama Z: Right.

Dr. Z: Everywhere you go, you’re a walking exercise machine.

Mama Z: I am. And I always bring my ab wheel with me wherever I go.

Dr. Z: You do.

[58:02 – 59:55] Natural Living Tip: The Healing Power of Essential Oils for Leaky Gut

Mama Z: And to wrap up today’s show, we have a special natural living tip for you.

Dr. Z: So we talked earlier in the show about leaky gut and inflammation. And when I was doing research about essential oils that work for leaky gut, I was actually quite surprised to find out that oregano oil, yes, oregano oil has been shown by clinical trials to heal and repair leaky gut.

And how do you do it? It’s pretty simple. What you do is you get a capsule. Here’s the thing, though, y’all. You have to get an enteric-coated time-release capsule. Otherwise, the oils will never reach your gut, because the gut is your distal colon. If you use a gel cap, the oils won’t survive past your gastric juices, because of the hydrochloric acid.

So what you’ll do is you’ll take two to three, on high end four drops of oregano oil, put it in an enteric-coated time-release capsule, and fill up the capsule with olive oil; or if you wanted to use sesame seed oil or grapeseed oil, any edible carrier oil. And you would take that capsule twice a day. And I would encourage you to try that for two weeks and see how your body responds.

And, you know, this recipe is a recipe that’s included in the essential oils diet book. And we have other recipes as well that could help with gut health. So be sure to check out EssentialOilsDiet.com.

Mama Z: And don’t forget, as a special gift to our Natural Living Family Podcast listeners, Air Doctor is giving you three-hundred dollars off their portable air purification system, so that you and your family can enjoy pure, clean air in your home all day long.
