Welcome to the Essential Oils Apothecary! Today’s life-transforming tip on how to use essential oils safely & effectively is brought to you by the Natural Living Family Podcast.

This is your host Dr. Eric Zielinski (you can call me Dr. Z) – bestselling author of The Healing Power of Essential Oils – I am honored to be your guide on your journey to experiencing an abundant life…

  • Today’s tip is taken from The Healing Power of Essential Oils, with more than 100,000 copies sold it has been the #1 bestselling aromatherapy book on Amazon for nearly 2 years – and last I checked, Amazon had it on sale for just 13 bucks so get your copy today!

So, let’s talk about creating new daily habits with essential oils

In my book, I’ve devised a variety of different ways that you can create a daily essential oils practice that suits you and your fundamental needs. And today, we’re going to discuss a wonderful morning practice to set yourself up for mental, physical, and spiritual health throughout the day. If you are wondering if you can commit, try it for just one day. I think you’ll love it and want to do it the next day, and the next, and the next, until essential oils are part of every day!

Morning Ritual: Essential Oil Prayer and Spiritual Practice

Nothing can help you focus and get into a spiritual, meditative mindset at the beginning of the day like using essential oils. Making modern-day versions of ancient holy anointing oil recipes can help you find inner peace, calm anxiety, alleviate stress, combat depression, and balance your emotions. You can do this with either a diffuser or a roll-on applicator.

To make a morning meditation blend that will work for you, use those oils that help you reach a mindful state and combine them to create a pleasant aroma—one that you’ll want to use over and over again.

Here’s a list of some of the oils that have traditionally been used for mental clarity, meditation, and mindfulness. Chances are you have a couple of these on hand!

  • Amyris (aka West Indian rosewood or Indies sandalwood)
  • Angelica root
  • Bergamot
  • Buddha wood
  • Cedarwood
  • Frankincense
  • Elemi
  • Helichrysum
  • Key lime
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Myrrh
  • Neroli
  • Opoponax
  • Orange
  • Palmarosa
  • Palo santo
  • Patchouli
  • Peru Balsam
  • Petitgrain
  • Roman chamomile
  • Rose
  • Rosemary
  • Sandalwood
  • Vitex
  • Valerian
  • Ylang ylang

Try blending some of the citrus (such as lemon, lime, neroli, or orange) with the resins (frankincense, myrrh, or opoponax). Or blend some of the florals (lavender, rose, or ylang ylang) with the barks (cedarwood, sandalwood, or Peru balsam).

At first, limit your blend to two or three oils; then build your way up to six at the most.

If you need a kick start or a little more guidance, try my favorite combination: frankincense, patchouli, vetiver, ylang ylang, and neroli (or yuzu as the citrus scent). I love it!

Here are two recipes for you:

RECIPE #1 MORNING MEDITATION DIFFUSER BLEND

  • 1 drop each of frankincense, patchouli, vetiver, ylang ylang, and neroli essential oils

SUPPLIES

  • Diffuser

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fill the diffuser with water as directed in the instructions for your diffuser.
  2. Add the essential oils.
  3. Turn on the diffuser 5 minutes before you begin your prayer and spiritual practice to permeate the room with the aroma.
  4. Turn off the diffuser when done.
Note: You can keep this mixture in the diffuser and use it every morning until the diffuser is empty.

RECIPE #2 MORNING MEDITATION INHALER

If you’re on the road and don’t have a diffuser on hand, then using an inhaler is the next best thing. It’s also a great alternative to the diffuser if you’re sensitive to smell and want to control how much of the essential oil vapors you’re breathing in during your practice.

  • 5 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops vetiver essential oil
  • 3 drops patchouli essential oil
  • 3 drops ylang ylang essential oil
  • 3 drops neroli essential oil

SUPPLIES

  • Precut organic cotton pad
  • Aromatherapy inhaler

INSTUCTIONS

  1. Place a cotton pad in the inhaler tube.
  2. Drop the essential oils directly onto the cotton pad inside the tube. Alter- natively, you can drop the essential oils into a glass bowl, roll the cotton pad in the oils to absorb them, and then insert it into the inhaler tube using tweezers.
  3. Open the inhaler, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths right before you begin your meditation practice or prayer time.

Welcome to the Essential Oils Apothecary! Today’s life-transforming tip on how to use essential oils safely & effectively is brought to you by the Natural Living Family Podcast.

This is your host Dr. Eric Zielinski (you can call me Dr. Z) – bestselling author and essential oils researcher – I am honored to be your guide on your journey to experiencing an abundant life…

  • Today’s tip is taken from my latest bestselling book co-authored by my lovely wife Mama Z, The Essential Oils Diet is available everywhere books are sold – and last I checked, Amazon had it on sale for just 16 bucks, so get your copy today!

So, let’s talk about Thinking Safety First

Your skin soaks up chemicals like a sponge, so you need to be extremely careful about what you put on it. (The same goes for what you put in your body.) Even though essential oils are bioactive compounds, these highly concentrated ingredients can interact with your skin, possibly causing an allergic response or contact dermatitis (also known as sensitization).

This is not to scare you away from using essential oils. They are actually at the bottom of the list of chemicals that can cause reactions with overexposure. Believe it or not, it is safer to use essential oils than to plunge into a chlorinated swimming pool!

Still, your body is not designed to have these oils slathered on “neat.” Rather, you need to dilute them with what is called a carrier oil.

Trust us, friends don’t let friends use essential oils neat. As a general rule of thumb, you will use three drops of essential oils to each tablespoon of carrier oil in topical applications. If you have particularly sensitive skin, you might want to start with half that much essential oil

Carrier oils are fatty extracts, usually cold-pressed from such sources as almonds, olives, and coconuts, that make an excellent medium to disperse the more concentrated essential oil across your skin. Unlike essential oils, carrier oils are nutritive. They also have healing properties of their own, such as being soothing and anti-inflammatory.

The Importance of Carrier Oils

Just as oxygen rusts metal, exposure to air, heat, or sunlight breaks down the chemicals in essential oils, which accounts for their typical life span of two to three years. Every time you open a container, the oil is exposed to oxygen. This is even more problematic if the bottle doesn’t have a dropper lid. The more an oil degrades, the less its therapeutic effect.

Another reason that carrier oils are key to essential oil use is that those with high antioxidant properties counter the process of oxidation. Unlike olive oil or regular coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil prevents oxidation and extends the shelf life of essential oils.

Easy Kitchen Carrier Oils

Before you run out and buy a bunch of different kinds of carrier oils, we suggest you start in your kitchen, where you may already have both olive oil and coconut oil. Both are relatively thick, making them useful as an emollient, as well as for culinary preparations.

  • Olive oil. Your food can be medicine, literally. Olive oil is exceptionally healing and has actually been proven to help heal foot ulcers! Your best bet is extra-virgin olive oil, which is extracted with cold-pressing, rather than heat or chemicals.
  • Coconut oil. This saturated oil is creamy or solid rather than liquid at room temperature. It penetrates the skin nicely but does tend to leave a slightly greasy residue. Like olive oil, coconut oil heals wounds, presumably by increasing the body’s antioxidant levels after being applied to the skin. Cold-pressed coconut oil is processed at temperatures that never exceed 120°F, while expeller-pressed coconut oil is processed at temperatures that never exceed 210°F. Higher temperatures reduce the nutritional value.
  • Fractionated coconut oil (FCO). A process that removes long- chain fatty acids renders FCO always liquid, making it ideal for roller bottle recipes. Unlike regular coconut oil, FCO will not harden, doesn’t leave any residue on your skin, and will never get rancid, extending the shelf life of essential oil blends and making it cost-effective.

Popular Nut and Seed Carrier Oils

Packed with vitamins A and E and other nutrients, nut and seed oils are useful for lotions and in roller bottles. Warning: If you are allergic to nut oils, stay away from both almond and jojoba oils and use avocado, olive, or grapeseed oil instead.

  • Almond oil. This mildly scented and flavored oil is both nutrient rich and versatile, known to improve complexion and skin tone. Again, if you’re allergic to tree nuts, steer clear of it.
  • Jojoba oil. With a thicker consistency than almond oil, jojoba is able to penetrate deep into the skin and cells and deliver powerful anti-inflammatory effects.  A long shelf life makes it handy for small dilution preparations. Once more, avoid jojoba if you are allergic to nut

Fruit Seed Carrier Oils

Extracted from the seeds of fruits, these oils are especially effective for deep hydration, making them ideal for massage oils as well as lip and body balms. More expensive than other carrier oils, fruit seed oils can be found in health food stores and most well-stocked grocery stores, although you can also order them online. These are some of the more common oils:

  • Apricot oil. Available as expeller-pressed or cold-pressed, the difference is simply one of texture and preference. (Again, cold-pressed oils are processed at lower temperatures than expeller-pressed oils.) Apricot oil’s nutrient profile includes vitamins E and A, or at least the carotenoid precursor to vitamin A.  Because it is both incredibly gentle and nourishing, apricot oil is a good choice for applications that will cover a good deal of skin or that will be heavily applied to children.
  • Avocado oil. Made from the smooth flesh around the pit, avocado oil is exceptionally rich in nutrients, as is the fruit. An emollient, the oil is excellent for nourishing dry, damaged, or chapped skin.
  • Grapeseed oil. Another common culinary oil, grapeseed contains high levels of beneficial fatty acids and antioxidants. A relatively light oil, it leaves less of a greasy film on skin than more saturated oils.

Essential Fatty Acid Carrier Oils

Although most of the carrier oils we’ve discussed thus far are decent sources of essential fatty acids, some oils are considered more robust sources of these vital nutrients. Rich in fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), borage and primrose top the list of such carrier oils.

  • Borage oil. Made from the seeds of a perennial herb, borage oil is an excellent source of gamma-linolenic acid, an anti-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acid. It is widely used as a nutritional supplement and topically for such skin conditions as dermatitis.
  • Evening primrose oil. Named for the flower that opens only in the evening, evening primrose oil is delicate, so it should be stored in the refrigerator and not added to any heated preparations. It has traditionally been used for women’s health and been clinically shown to reduce menopausal hot flashes.

Well, that’s a wrap. All you need to know to get started with carrier oils!

So, let’s talk about how essential oils can help you reach your weight-loss goals. Trust me, it’s not hocus-pocus. There is an entire branch of science that validates why essential oils “work.”

Scent can communicate to your body that it’s time to burn fat. According to one study, “Olfactory stimulation with scent of grapefruit oil excites the sympathetic nerve innervating the white adipose [fat] tissue. It [the scent] can also reduce appetite and body weight.” Pretty cool, huh? But let’s go a little deeper.

Inhaling volatile organic compounds has a direct effect not just on your body but also on your brain. That’s because these compounds affect the limbic system of your brain (aka your primal brain) that controls emotions, mood, and memory. This explains why certain scents can be associated with certain memories and can even trigger post-traumatic stress.

Here’s how it works: When you smell a rose, for example, the volatile organic compounds in the rose oil dissolve in the mucous lining on the roof of your nasal cavity and stimulate olfactory receptors. Sensory neurons carry signals from your receptors to your brain’s olfactory bulb, which filters and then processes the input signals of the rose scent. Next, mitral cells carry output signals to the olfactory cortex, which allows you to perceive and recognize the rose scent. This system is amazingly complex, but even more amazing is that it happens within an instant.

The Limbic Brain and Weight Management

What role does the limbic brain play in weight management? In simple terms, the scents of various essential oils impact your brain’s responses. A response to grapefruit oil can decrease your appetite and even stimulate fat breakdown. Orange oil can help alleviate depression, making you less likely to reach for (junk) food to cheer you up. Peppermint oil boosts your energy level by relaxing bronchial smooth muscles, thereby expanding your lung capacity so you can breathe in more oxygen. The result is that your cells burn fat more efficiently.

Alone or in combination, essential oils offer stimulating, appetite-curbing benefits that can be used when cravings hit, at mealtime, or when working out. Essential oils also come into play in addressing health issues that can impact weight management. For example, cinnamon bark oil can improve glycemic control and provide some protection to the pancreas, enhancing insulin regulation. Both of these factors are crucial for diabetics and helpful for anyone to better manage excess glucose, rather than store it as body fat.

But we’re not done yet. Candida overgrowth, inflammation, insufficient or poor sleep, stress, depression, and hormone imbalance can all sabotage your weight-loss and weight-maintenance efforts. (Some of these conditions, along with cancer and other diseases, also make it difficult to maintain a healthy weight.) Happily, they, too, can all be addressed by using essential oils. Finally, and more importantly, essential oils can be beneficial in dealing with gut issues, which can also sabotage slimming efforts.

Now, let’s turn this information into action!

Try for Yourself Recipe 1: Make a 2 percent dilution by mixing three drops each of cinnamon bark, grapefruit, lime, and peppermint essential oils in a small glass container with 1 ounce (6 teaspoons) of jojoba oil. Then rub it into the back of your neck and abdomen, which produces a systemic effect as essential oils reach the bloodstream within minutes.

Try for Yourself Recipe 2: Make a hunger-curbing, energy-boosting aroma- therapy inhaler by simply adding twenty drops of peppermint oil to the cotton swab that comes with your inhaler, insert it into the tube, and secure it with the lid for on-the-go benefit. Between meals, simply open the inhaler and take a few deep breaths of the vapor to keep you energized and help tame cravings for unhealthy foods.

Well, that’s a wrap. The wonderful science of smell and how to use essential oils to reach your ideal weight!

So, let’s talk about… Mama Z’s Skin Healing Serum

Sabrina’s dad is a retired agriscientist and he has always been—and likely always will be—a passionate hobby farmer. In addition to his full-time job, he has spent more than forty hours per week in the garden for as long as she can remember. He lived outside during the growing season any time he wasn’t at work, and a lot of our family time was spent picking weeds and harvesting our produce. Even now, long retired from the agriculture business, he’s still in the garden year-round. She has him to thank for my work ethic, my green thumb, and my sensitive skin!

Her dad’s been bald for many years now and he’s always had a problem with cancerous lesions on his scalp. Like she says, he goes through ball caps like her mom and her go through panty hose, but that still doesn’t keep all the sun away from his pale, Irish/Scandinavian skin. For decades, her dad has battled melanoma on his head and has also recently developed precancerous lesions on his arms and hands.

During her dad’s most recent bout with skin cancer, he showed her the cream his doctor prescribed. One of its side effects was cancer! Isn’t that crazy?? I still can’t get over the insanity behind an anti–skin cancer cream prescribed by a medical doctor that can cause cancer in other parts of the body.
Her dad had been applying this cream on his skin for months after having several tumors removed. Unfortunately, this approach didn’t really help at all. In fact, the skin began to scale and resembled a candida infection.

Mama Z asked him if he wanted to be healed and he said, “Of course!” She asked him if he’d be willing to try her favorite DIY anti-aging skin cream and he said yes, but only if he could finish off the prescription stuff he was using. I said, “Fair enough,” and went to work.

She ended up making her dad two varieties of her anti-aging cream for him to try: one with lavender oil only and another with a blend of lavender, tea tree, and frankincense. He used both her cream and the prescription stuff for a short time and ended up using my concoctions alone. From what we can tell, the precancerous lesions were not a sign of a candida infection and they simply disappeared and didn’t progress to melanoma.

Within six weeks, his hands and arms were completely clear, and now he’s a believer in the power of DIY with essential oils! Praise God!

Now, let’s turn this information into action!

Tip #5 – Can Essential Oils Be Used for Infertility?

Read more about how essential oils can be used for infertility

Welcome to the Essential Oils Apothecary! Today’s life-transforming tip on how to use essential oils safely & effectively is brought to you by the Natural Living Family Podcast.

This is your host Dr. Eric Zielinski (you can call me Dr. Z) – bestselling author and essential oils researcher – I am honored to be your guide on your journey to experiencing an abundant life…

Today’s tip is taken from The Healing Power of Essential Oils, with more than 100,000 copies sold it has been the #1 bestselling aromatherapy book on Amazon for nearly 2 years – and last I checked, Amazon had it on sale for just 13 bucks so get your copy today!

So, let’s talk about how essential oils can be used for infertility.

I’ve had women, desperate for help, ask me about how to use essential oils to increase their odds of conceiving and avoiding miscarriage, and I’m always at a loss for a definitive answer because the research is so quiet in this area. What really confuses people is that if you search “essential oils for infertility” online, you’ll get 2.5 million hits on Google (up from 536,000 at the time I wrote my first book, two ago) linking you to articles that offer all sorts of infertility solutions using essential oils.

Let me be the one to burst the bubble here: Most of the so-called fertility blends and lists of oils you see out there in the blogosphere are nonsense. There is absolutely no scientific evidence suggesting that they really work.

What we do know is that stress, diet, comorbidities (other health issues), prescription drugs, prior use of birth control, and a number of other factors can play a role in the fertility of both partners. We also know that oxidative stress is a leading cause of male infertility and antioxidative supplementation produces a significant improvement in sperm motility (how well the sperm are able to move).

Research suggests that, because they are rich in antioxidants, oral administration of certain essential oils can help, but this is still experimental at best. One review assessing the effectiveness of the antioxidant-rich Sat-ur-ej-a khuz-est-an-ica essential oil found that it displays significant antioxidant activity, and that when administered in high amounts male rats, it improved sperm quality and litter size.

You’ve probably not been introduced to this oil yet because it’s not readily available for sale to most consumers. Native to southern Iran, Sat-ur-ej-a khuz-est-an-ica is best known in the Middle East for its pain-killing and infection-fighting prowess. It’s rich in carvacrol and thymol and is a genus of the La-mia-ce-e family and is related to oregano and thyme.

This is not to say that oral doses of oregano and thyme will get you pregnant. I’m just throwing it out there in case you’re interested in trying something a little unconventional—such as taking a drop each of oregano and thyme oil in a gel capsule once a day for three to four weeks to see what happens.

For the Men Out There

A 2019 in vitro study published in the Scientific World Journal evaluated of the effect of three EOs on human sperm quality and the results show an increase in mobility and vitality. Oregano, Eucalyptus & Sage Essential oils were incubated with sperm and significant improvements were observed that could lead to fertility. The researchers concluded that that these EOs can be a safe therapeutic alternative for the management of motility and vitality dysfunction. Though, these were in vitro studies and do not have any application in a real-life situation.

the best solution that I have found is to create a healthy environment in the body and focus on balanced body chemistry. Remember, the real power of essential oils is to help the body reach harmony, and using essential oils known to help the body reach homeostasis can do wonders!

Now, let’s turn this information into action!

If you’re struggling to conceive, try applying a 3%–5% dilution of a known harmonizer such as ylang ylang over your abdomen daily for three to four weeks and see if that can restore the hormonal balance that promotes fertility. Or try the harmonizing blend that follows.

Whatever course you choose, never lose hope. Keep trying different options, and I pray that you find the answer that you’re looking for!

Just do me a favor and keep me posted. I always love to read the “medical miracles” that flow through my inbox telling me how essential oils have changed people’s lives! My contact information is in the resources section at the end of the book and I’d love to stay in touch.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Mix the essential oils in a 2 oz glass jar.

Well, that’s a wrap. The truth about EOs about fertility.

Five Ways to Reach Your Health Goal with Orange Essential Oil

Primarily because of its rich d-limonene content (more on that to come), orange oil is truly one of the most versatile and cost-effective essential oils on the market. Just look at these five ways that orange oil can be used therapeutically.

1. Fight Cancer

The most prominent and noteworthy component of not only orange, but all cit- rus oils, is d-limonene, which has been shown to be a potent cancer-fighting agent. Although we cannot pinpoint the exact mechanism, research suggests that d-limonene not only inhibits tumor growth, but triggers what’s known as apoptosis (cancer cell suicide). Orange oil also contains polymethoxyflavones, phytochemicals that have been shown to slow the growth of and even kill human lung cancer.

It’s important to note that essential oil therapy for cancer patients is still untested and hotly debated because a vast majority of the research discussing the cancer- fighting benefits of essential oils is based on in vitro studies (cells in a petri dish) or conducted on animals. Granted, there are relatively few side effects if used safely and wisely—but consult your physician to make sure these oils are not contraindicated for any drugs you are taking.

2. Improve Cognitive Function

An interesting study published in the journal Psychogeriatrics evaluated the effects of aromatherapy on twenty-eight elderly people suffering from dementia, with the majority also diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. They were given rosemary and lemon inhalations in the morning, then lavender and orange in the evening. Through multiple tests and forms of analysis, the “patients showed significant improvement in personal orientation” without any deleterious side effects.27 This study shows that orange oil—when used in combination with rosemary, lemon, and lavender—can improve cognitive ability and that it is made more powerful when part of multifunc- tional blends.

3. Relieve Anxiety

Orange oil has also been shown to help relieve presurgical anxiety in dental patients. One study looked at both orange and lavender essential oil in comparison to listen- ing to music or no intervention. The researchers found that those patients who were exposed to the fragrance of either lavender or orange enjoyed a significant reduction in presurgical anxiety, and their mood was boosted as well.

I highlight this study because these patients were battling a considerable amount of anxiety going into dental surgery. If research like this shows us how helpful orange oil (along with lavender oil) can be under stressful circumstances, imagine how it might enhance normal, everyday life!

CITRUS LOVER’S ANXIETY INHALER

  • 5 drops orange essential oil
  • 5 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 5 drops sandalwood essential oil
  • 5 drops ylang ylang essential oil

SUPPLIES

  1. Precut organic cotton pad Aromatherapy inhaler
  2. Place a cotton pad in the inhaler tube.
  3. Drop the essential oils directly onto the cotton pad inside the tube.
  4. Secure the cap and store in desk drawer, purse, or glove compartment so you have it handy.
  5. When a panic attack hits or when you feel anxious, simply open the inhaler and take a few deep breaths of vapor from the tube.

4. Reduce Joint Pain

There aren’t many studies on the effect of citrus oils on pain, but an interesting study from 2008 looked at the use of orange and ginger oils to reduce knee pain in a group of elderly people. Fifty-nine patients received six massage sessions over six weeks using an aromatic massage oil (1% Zingiber officinale and 0.5% Citrus sinensis, with olive oil as the carrier).

Their pain started to decrease within the first week. Notably, these people regularly experienced “moderate to severe” knee pain, so the relief was most welcome. Interestingly, the pain relief wasn’t permanent. It only lasted until a week after the study ended, which suggests that regular use is necessary for joint-related issues such as morning stiffness and inflammatory disease.

5. Ward Off Harmful Microbes

Like many essential oils, orange is antimicrobial. In a study of ten essential oils and their ability to kill twenty-two different strains of bacteria and twelve strains of fungi, orange oil was one of only four oils that were able to kill off all strains. The study pitted multiple types of bacteria, yeast, and fungi against essential oils, which suggests that orange can be used to treat a variety of microbial attacks.
